Siti Noordjannah Djohantini (born 15 August 1958) is a female Islamic scholar from Indonesia currently serving her second term as the leader of Aisyiyah,Indonesia's first all-female Muslim organization. She was elected to her second term as leader on 6 August 2015,the same day on which her husband Haedar Nashir was elected to his first term as leader of Muhammadiyah. [1] She was also the co-founder of Yasanti,Indonesia's first female workers' rights NGO. [2]
Djohantini was raised in a household that was very active in Islamic civil society groups. She attended Muhammadiyah schools from elementary to high school,was the vice president of Muhammadiyah's student wing from 1983 to 1986,was the chairwoman of Aisyiyah's youth wing from 1990 to 1995,and worked as a lecturer at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta's School of Economics. Muhammadiyah;officially Muhammadiyah Society is a major Islamic non-governmental organization in Indonesia. The organization was founded in 1912 by Ahmad Dahlan in the city of Yogyakarta as a reformist socioreligious movement,advocating ijtihad - individual interpretation of Qur'an and Sunnah,as opposed to Taqlid - conformity to the traditional interpretations propounded by the ulama. Since its establishment,Muhammadiyah has adopted a reformist platform mixing religious and secular education,primarily as a way to promote the upward mobility of Muslims toward a 'modern' community and to purify Indonesian Islam of local syncretic practices. Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan,often abbreviated to K.H. Ahmad Dahlan,was an Indonesian Muslim religious leader and revivalist,who established the Muhammadiyah organization. Aisyiyah is an Islamic non-governmental organization in Indonesia dedicated to female empowerment and charitable work. It was formed on 19 May 1917 by Nyai Ahmad Dahlan to facilitate women's access to education,health care and social services. The organization provides micro-loan and small business development support,family planning services,maternal and pediatric care,orphanages,training for female Muslim clerics,and standard preschool through university level education. These social services end at death,whereby the organization provides female morticians so that female bodies do not need to be prepared for burial by men. Aisyiyah manages several hundred healthcare centers in Indonesia as well as three branches in Egypt,Malaysia and the Netherlands. The organization's stated goal is to make Islamic society a reality for women,and it encourages its members to seek further education even if they become "smarter than their husbands."

She was the first female to lead an Islamic higher education institution in Indonesia as well as the first female rector in the eastern part of Indonesia. At the end of her term as rector,Rasdiyanah was appointed by the minister of religious affairs as the director general for Islamic institutions. She was replaced in the position and continued teaching at the Alauddin Islamic State Institute until her death.
