Siti Chamamah Soeratno is a female Islamic scholar from Indonesia and the former leader of Aisyiyah,Indonesia's first all-female Muslim organization. She is also the former dean of Muhammadiyah University of Malang and an expert on Indonesian literature. [1] She has served as a faculty member at Leiden University,Mercu Buana University,Sebelas Maret University and Yogyakarta State University among others. [2]
Soeratno's involvement with Islamic organizations began early in her life. She attended a Muhammadiyah high school and became the chairwoman of Aisyiyah's youth wing in 1965. [2] She is a proponent of the Islamization of knowledge,promoting the view that the adjective "Islamic" should refer more than to strictly religious practices and should include all aspects of life and referring to democracy,equality,justice and the human norms of liberty as "Islamic values." NU is also a charitable body funding schools and hospitals as well as organizing communities to help alleviate poverty.
Muhammad Amien Rais is an Indonesian politician. He was one of the leaders of the reform movement that forced the resignation of President Suharto in 1998. The group also runs a large chain of charity hospitals,and operated 128 universities as of the late 1990s.
Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan,often abbreviated to K.H. Ahmad Dahlan,was an Indonesian Muslim religious leader and revivalist,who established the Muhammadiyah organization. Which would become one of the largest muslim organizations in Indonesia,second only to the Nahdlatul Ulama. Born in Kauman,Yogyakarta,he was the son of an imam of a local mosque,and traced his origins from the lineage of Muhammad. Ahmad Dahlan performed the Hajj pilgrimage when he was 15 years old,and he lived in Mecca for another five years.

Aisyiyah is an Islamic non-governmental organization in Indonesia dedicated to female empowerment and charitable work. It was formed on 19 May 1917 by Nyai Ahmad Dahlan to facilitate women's access to education,health care and social services. The organization provides micro-loan and small business development support,family planning services,maternal and pediatric care,orphanages,training for female Muslim clerics,and standard preschool through university level education. These social services end at death,whereby the organization provides female morticians so that female bodies do not need to be prepared for burial by men. Aisyiyah manages several hundred healthcare centers in Indonesia as well as three branches in Egypt,Malaysia and the Netherlands. The organization's stated goal is to make Islamic society a reality for women,and it encourages its members to seek further education even if they become "smarter than their husbands."

Muhadjir Effendy is an Indonesian politician and rector. He is the minister of education and culture of the Republic of Indonesia in the Working Cabinet. He was appointed by President Joko Widodo on 27 July 2016 replacing Anies Baswedan. Effendy was also the Rector of Muhammadiyah University of Malang in Indonesia from 2000 to 2016. In addition Muhadjir is chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Board of Education and Culture.

The issues women in Indonesia currently are facing include gender violence,underage marriages,and lack of representation in the political system. Feminism and the women's right movement began during colonial Indonesia under Dutch rule and were spearheaded by the national heroine Kartini,a Javanese noblewoman who advocated for the education of all women and girls regardless of social status. In the early 19th century,women's rights organizations and movements were allowed to developed under Budi Utomo,the first Indonesian Nationalist organization. Modern day Indonesian feminism include and are influenced by both fundamentalist and progressive Islamic women's organizations.
