Sivasankaran Bijoy Nandan is a professor at the Department of Marine Biology,Microbiology &Biochemistry,School of Marine Sciences,Cochin University of Science &Technology (CUSAT). [1] He currently holds the office of the Dean,Faculty of Marine Sciences,Cochin University of Science and Technology. [1] He was served as Head of the department,Department of Marine Biology,Microbiology and Biochemistry,CUSAT during 2019-2021 period. [2] He has expertise in teaching,research,and development activities in the broad area of Aquatic Ecosystem Characterisation,Conservation,Restoration and Management,Carbon Dynamics &Community Ecology,Communities Ecology &Biology,Eco-toxicology and Biology of Polar Communities. [3] [4] Recently a new species of deep sea wood boring mollusc collected from eastern Arabian Sea named after Prof. Bijoy Nandan as Xylophaga nandani by team of Researchers from Brazil and India namely,Marcel Velásquez,P.R. Jayachandran &M. Jima. [5]
The R&D achievements emanated through the financial support garnered from various research and consultancy based projects funded by the national and international agencies. [6] [1] He has been liaising several international collaborations and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with reputed national and international institutions for academic advancement in ocean science. In this context,he was also instrumental in organising the Erudite –Scholar in Residence program,Chancellor chair and Fulbright visiting scientist programs. [7]
He authored or co-authored more than 220 journal articles,books,and proceedings and has edited ten books in special volumes. [8] He received Jawaharlal Nehru Award in 1993,instituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research [9] and the UNESCO Fellowship,2008. He is also a U.S. Fulbright Visiting Scholar, [4] Technical Member,Kerala State Pollution Control Board,Fellow of National Institute of Ecology,India and Coordinator of the UGC-SAP programme of the Dept. of Marine Biology. He supervised several students for Doctoral program in CUSAT,Mahatma Gandhi University and MS University. [10] Several new species of marine organisms were described by his team (Leptestheria dumonti,Eulimnadia azisi,Pseudosesarma glabrum,Victoriopisa cusatensis,Horaglanis krishnai,Tortanus minicoyensis,Indosphenia kayalum [1] .

Kayamkulam Kayal,Kayamkulam Lake or Kayamkulam Estuary is a shallow brackish water lagoon stretching between Panmana and Karthikapally. It has an outlet to the Arabian sea at Kayamkulam barrage. The Kayal used to be connected to the sea most of the time except during dry season when a bar like formation separates it from the sea. He has established and successfully developed the first Fisheries and Ocean Sciences University in the country. He served as UGC Professor (Fisheries) at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) for over eighteen years.
Narayana Balakrishnan Nair (1927–2010) was a marine biologist,ecologist and the founder president of Kerala Science Congress. He was known for his advocacy of trawling ban during monsoon seasons which was later accepted and imposed by the Government of Kerala. A Jawaharlal Nehru fellow,Nair was an elected fellow of all the major Indian science academies as well as the Zoological Society of London. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 1971,for his contributions to biological sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1984.
Victoriopisa cusatensis is a amphipod species in the family Eriopisidae. The species name ‘cusatensis’refers to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). This species has been described by the team of researchers in 2018 from the Valanthakad mangrove area of Vembanad backwater.
Indosphenia kayalum is a small bivalve species inhabiting fragmented brackish-water habitats around Kochi backwater,Kerala. The specific name kayalum is derived from kayal,the Malayalam name for these backwaters. This species was described in 2018 from the Ezhupunna region of Cochin Backwater,Vembanad Lake along with other myid clam Mytilopsis and brackish water gastropod Nassodonta insignis. This is the fifth species described in the genus Indosphenia. The other species recognized under this genus are Indosphenia cochinensis,Indosphenia abbreviata,Indosphenia abbreviata chilkaensis and Indosphenia sowerbyi.
The School of Life Sciences,Kannur University hosts two departments,Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology,which was established in 2000 for conducting master's degree (M.Sc) courses and research (Ph.D) in Biotechnology and Microbiology. Stygarctus keralensis is a species of marine tardigrade. It is described from the intertidal area of Vadakara beach,Kerala it can be easily differentiated from closely related species S. gourbaultae. This species was described by groups of researchers namely N.K. Vishnudattan,S. Bijoy Nandan and P.R. Jayachandran of Cochin University of Science and Technology,Kerala,India and J.G. Hansen of University of Copenhagen,Denmark. This species has been named after "Kerala State" situated in the south west coast of India where this species live. The present discovery is an outcome of an ongoing Ministry of Earth Sciences-National Centre for Earth Science Studies study on the ecology and diversity of submarine groundwater habitats of Kerala led by Sivasankaran Bijoy Nandan.
Xylophaga nandani is a species of bivalve in the family Xylophagaidae named after professor Sivasankaran Bijoy Nandan,an eminent marine biologist in India.
