Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is a state government-owned autonomous university in Kochi,Kerala,India. It was founded in 1971 and has three campuses:two in Kochi and one in Kuttanad,Alappuzha,66 km (41 mi) inland. The university awards degrees in engineering and science at the undergraduate,postgraduate and doctoral levels.
Model Engineering College or MEC is a government cost-sharing technical institute and research centre in Thrikkakara,Kochi,Kerala,India. It was established by the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD),an autonomous agency under the Government of Kerala,in 1989. It is affiliated to the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) since 2015.

The Centre for Marine Living Resources &Ecology (CMLRE) is a research institute in Kochi,Kerala under the Ministry of Earth Sciences,Government of India with a mandate to study the marine living resources. Kayamkulam Kayal,Kayamkulam Lake or Kayamkulam Estuary is a shallow brackish water lagoon stretching between Panmana and Karthikapally. It has an outlet to the Arabian sea at Kayamkulam barrage. The Kayal used to be connected to the sea most of the time except during dry season when a bar like formation separates it from the sea. Now the bar has been opened up permanently for construction of Kayamkulam Fishing Harbor. Kayamkulam boat race is conducted in Kayamkulam Kayal.

He has established and successfully developed the first Fisheries and Ocean Sciences University in the country. He did his postdoc from Fish Culture and Fisheries division,Wageningen University &Research,The Netherlands. He served as UGC Professor (Fisheries) at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) for over eighteen years.
Narayana Balakrishnan Nair (1927–2010) was a marine biologist,ecologist and the founder president of Kerala Science Congress. He was known for his advocacy of trawling ban during monsoon seasons which was later accepted and imposed by the Government of Kerala. A Jawaharlal Nehru fellow,Nair was an elected fellow of all the major Indian science academies as well as the Zoological Society of London. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 1971,for his contributions to biological sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1984.
Victoriopisa cusatensis is a amphipod species in the family Eriopisidae. The species name ‘cusatensis’refers to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). This species has been described by the team of researchers in 2018 from the Valanthakad mangrove area of Vembanad backwater.
Indosphenia kayalum is a small bivalve species inhabiting fragmented brackish-water habitats around Kochi backwater,Kerala. The specific name kayalum is derived from kayal,the Malayalam name for these backwaters. This species was described in 2018 from the Ezhupunna region of Cochin Backwater,Vembanad Lake along with other myid clam Mytilopsis and brackish water gastropod Nassodonta insignis. This is the fifth species described in the genus Indosphenia. The other species recognized under this genus are Indosphenia cochinensis,Indosphenia abbreviata,Indosphenia abbreviata chilkaensis and Indosphenia sowerbyi.
The School of Life Sciences,Kannur University hosts two departments,Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology,which was established in 2000 for conducting master's degree (M.Sc) courses and research (Ph.D) in Biotechnology and Microbiology. An Inter University Centre for Bioscience was also established at the department by the Higher Education Department,Government of Kerala,to be a global center of excellence for research in biological sciences. Stygarctus keralensis is a species of marine tardigrade. It is described from the intertidal area of Vadakara beach,Kerala it can be easily differentiated from closely related species S. gourbaultae. This species was described by groups of researchers namely N.K. Vishnudattan,S. Bijoy Nandan and P.R. Jayachandran of Cochin University of Science and Technology,Kerala,India and J.G. Hansen of University of Copenhagen,Denmark. This species has been named after "Kerala State" situated in the south west coast of India where this species live. The present discovery is an outcome of an ongoing Ministry of Earth Sciences-National Centre for Earth Science Studies study on the ecology and diversity of submarine groundwater habitats of Kerala led by Sivasankaran Bijoy Nandan.
