Snake Sideways is the debut studio album by Nottingham band Do Nothing, released by Exact Truth on 30 June 2023. Upon release, Snake Sideways received generally favorable reviews, with critics expressing varied assessments of the album's more subdued and experimental approach compared to earlier releases.
Snake Sideways was written following the release of several EPs, including Zero Dollar Bill in 2020 and Glueland in 2021. [1] Describing the writing process as a "terrible time", vocalist Chris Bailey stated that he encountered writer's block and anxiety during the creation of the debut, [1] The element of "panic" and "unhealthily obsessive" recording process led Bailey to be "more candid" in his lyricism, [2] stating that the lyrics came from a "very honest space" about "being in a tough spot and trying to see a way out of it". [1] Bailey cited the musician Tom Waits and electronic band Underworld as inspirations for the direction of the album. [3] The album was produced by Black Country, New Road producer Andy Savours and mixed by Oli Barton Wood, [4] [2]
The lead single, Happy Feet, was directed by Luke Ainger and released in February 2023. [4] Snake Sideways was announced by the band in April 2023 and released on 30 June. [4] The album announcement coincided with the release of the second single, Amoeba, directed by Clump Collective. [5] To support the album, the band launched a headline tour in the United Kingdom and Ireland in September and October 2023. [5]

According to review aggregator website Metacritic, Snake Sideways received "generally favorable" reviews from critics. [6] Amrit Virdi praised the album for playing to the band's strengths, describing it as a "mature and polished version of their experimental sound" and highlighting the "stark and honest" lyricism. [7] Rolling Stone UK stated that "the emotion of early stand-out ‘Happy Feet’ evokes the euphoric highs of noughties NYC indie, while ‘Moving Target’ is a beautifully restrained effort that shows they're capable of ballad-lite moments too." [12] Noting the "newly introspective" tone of the album, Max Pilley of NME considered the album to have an "enigmatic charm" and signs of musical evolution, but felt the "freshness" of the band's earlier recordings was "no longer so obvious". [11] Chris Taylor of DIY similarly considered the album to be a "far cry" from earlier songs, but considered the "raw nerves" of the lyricism and "spikiness" of the music to "bring a sense of hope" to the album. [8] Ross Horton of The Line of Best Fit considered the album to be functional but indistinct from other contemporary post-punk bands, stating "Everything here works, but that’s hardly great praise." [9] Stuart Stubbs of Loud and Quiet commended the band in being "adamant to try new things". [10]

Son of Dork were a British pop punk band formed by James Bourne after his previous band, Busted, split in January 2005. The name of the band came from a scene in the 1990 film Problem Child where the chant "Son of Dork" is used. Their debut single, "Ticket Outta Loserville", was released in November 2005, reaching No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. Their second single, "Eddie's Song", reached No. 10 in January 2006.

Guendoline Rome Viray Gomez provides the background vocals. The song was created as a homage to SoundCloud rap, while the title is a reference to an art performance by Joseph Beuys, titled I Like America and America Likes Me.

For the First Time is the debut studio album by British rock band Black Country, New Road, released on 5 February 2021 through Ninja Tune. The album was preceded by the release of two singles, "Science Fair" and "Track X", and also includes re-recorded versions of their 2019 debut singles "Athens, France" and "Sunglasses". Known for experimenting with post-punk, klezmer, free jazz, and math rock, the band showcased a clear preference for atmospherics over post-punk on For the First Time.
Ash Blue Gutierrez, known professionally as Glaive, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. After posting a string of hyperpop songs to SoundCloud during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic that earned him a following, he signed a record deal with Interscope Records and released his debut extended play, Cypress Grove, in 2020. His debut album, I Care So Much That I Don't Care at All, was released in 2023.
NewDad are an Irish indie rock band from Galway, formed in 2018. Their music has been compared to The Cure, Beabadoobee, and Just Mustard by NME magazine. Atwood Magazine wrote of the group: "The band oozes personality with cynical but honest lyrics, colorful visual components, and poignant messages about coping with the, albeit painful, formative experiences." The group have appeared at the Green Man Festival in Wales, the Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris, and on the Irish television program Other Voices.
L.S. Dunes is an American supergroup fronted by Circa Survive, Saosin and The Sound of Animals Fighting vocalist Anthony Green, with My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero, Coheed and Cambria guitarist Travis Stever, bassist Tim Payne, and drummer Tucker Rule from the band Thursday. They made their live debut at Riot Fest 2022 and released their debut album, Past Lives, on November 11, 2022, preceded by the singles "Permanent Rebellion", "2022" and "Bombsquad". The band played their first UK tour in January 2023, and their first US tour in July 2023.
