Sofia Beatrice Barclay (born 31 August 1988) is an English actress, screenwriter, playwright and comedian.
Barclay began her career in theatre, working at venues including the Old Vic and the National Theatre. [1] She moved to the screen in roles such as Dr. O’Sullivan in the Emmy-winning series Ted Lasso, Suzy Ray in the romantic comedy Love Again and the voice of Malala Windsor/Spider-UK in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She is soon to appear as DS Barbara Havers in the highly anticipated BBC One/BritBox crime drama Lynley [2]
Born in London, Sofia Barclay is the granddaughter of Sir David Barclay [3] and second cousin to Frederick Lubin. She was educated at Westminster School and later trained at Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City.
Initially credited as Sofia Stuart, Barclay began her career in theatre [4] as Desmonda in the 2012 Jack Studio Theatre production of Othello. [5] WhatsOnStage described her portrayal as “a delight to watch,” praising her “lively, innocent, trusting” interpretation [6] , while The British Theatre Guide noted she “stands apart,” [7] and OneStopArts called her performance “assured and heartbreakingly optimistic.” [8]
She moved into a range of stage roles, including a 2014 UK tour of The Two Worlds of Charlie F; Future Conditional at the Old Vic, directed by Matthew Warchus in 2015 [9] ; Nathalie in Lucy Kirkwood’s Mosquitoes, directed by Rufus Norris at the National Theatre in 2017 [10] ; and Alisha in Every Day I Make Greatness Happen at the Hampstead Theatre in 2019. [11]
In 2022, Barclay originated the role of Maya in the Basquiat-Warhol play, The Collaboration, at the Young Vic, performing opposite Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope under the direction of Kwame Kwei-Armah. [12]
Barclay moved to screen with performances in BBC Two’s “sharp and occasionally very silly” [13] legal sitcom Defending the Guilty [14] and Channel 4’s critically acclaimed We Are Lady Parts [15] [16] , and was cast as Adela Zal in a pilot for a potential NYPD Blue spin-off on ABC. [17]
In 2023, Barclay joined the second and third seasons of the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, playing Dr. O’Sullivan - the sharp-witted, no-nonsense sister of Roy Kent.
In 2024, it was announced that Barclay would take on the lead role of DS Barbara Havers opposite Leo Suter in a highly anticipated Lynley revival for BBC One and BritBox. [18] In early 2025, she appeared as Safiya Zamil in the Apple TV+ thriller Prime Target.
Her film work includes Julian Jarrod’s drama Sulphur and White [19] in 2020 and she featured with Céline Dion and Sam Heughan in the 2023 romantic comedy Love Again, as Priyanka Chopra’s sister [20] Barclay voiced Malala Windsor/Spider-UK in the Marvel animated blockbuster Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023.
