Soft Bomb is an album by New Zealand group The Chills, released in 1992. [1] [2] [3] It was the follow-up to Submarine Bells , which had hit number 1 in New Zealand in 1990.
Released to good reviews, Soft Bomb was followed by a world tour with an enlarged Chills line-up. In the midst of their US tour, financial backing and promotion was withdrawn for the album and tour. This line-up of the band disintegrated and Martin Phillipps would take some time to rebuild the band. Phillipps parted company with Slash Records after this album and tour.
The Chills released their second studio album Submarine Bells in 1990; it was well-received in Europe and was popular around colleges in the United States. Upon returning to their home country of New Zealand, the band went on a sold-out tour. Following this, keyboardist Andrew Todd and bassist Justin Harwood left, and Terry Moore, who had played with them in the early 1980s, returned on bass. Now a trio, the band started demoing material for the next release in July 1991.They then travelled to Burbank, California in the US to collaborate with producer Gavin MacKillop, known for his work with the Church and Shriekback. Peter Holsapple of the dB's then joined the band on keyboards. Prior to anything being done, drummer James Stephenson quit, having homesickness and reportedly clashing with Holsapple. Mauro Ruby took on Stephenson's role; Lisa Mednick and Steven Schayer of Clay Idols joined on keyboards and backing vocals, respectively. Van Dyke Parks contributed to the album, scoring "Water Wolves". [4]
"The Male Monster from the Id", the album's lead single, became the most added song from the album at college radio stations in the US. By July 1992, Early Robertson joined on drums. 100 shows were planned to promote the album; early into the itinerary, after completed shows of New Zealand Australia, the band felt that Robertson did not fit in. He was subsequently replaced by Craig Mason of Able Tasmans, who was already working with band as their lighting engineer. By the time the tour made it to the US, "Double Summer" was released as a single. Line-up issues were causing tension with the band, in addition to lower ticket sales than anticipated. Sometime around this, their label Slash Records withdrew further promotion in the US and the UK. In addition, London Recordings, who distributed Slash's releases in the UK, cancelled their support for the band's upcoming tour. In response, Phillipps promptly broke up the band after their final show in the US. [4]

The New York Times wrote: "Strange and majestic, these songs are Mr. Phillipps's attempt to test and reshape the possibilities of pop." [8] The Washington Post called it "a shimmering, buoyant pleasure." [9] For author Dave Thompson, in his book Alternative Rock (2000), the bulk of his review was centered on "Song for Randy Newman Etc", while also highlighting "Water Wolves" and "Double Summer". [6]

Generator is the sixth studio album by the punk rock band Bad Religion. Although the album was completed in the spring of 1991, it was not released until 1992; the band was not happy with the artwork and packaging, and went through several ideas that were eventually scrapped. Generator was the band's first release with drummer Bobby Schayer, who replaced Pete Finestone during the Against the Grain tour.

Thompson Twins were a British pop band formed in 1977 in Sheffield. Initially a new wave group, they switched to a more mainstream pop sound and achieved considerable popularity during the early and mid-1980s, scoring a string of hits in the United Kingdom, the United States, and around the world. In 1993, they changed their name to Babble, to reflect their change in music from pop to dub-influenced chill-out. They continued as Babble until 1996, at which point the group permanently broke up.

The Chills are a New Zealand rock band that formed in Dunedin in 1980. The band is essentially the continuing project of singer/songwriter Martin Phillipps, who is the group's sole constant member. For a time in the 1990s, the act was billed as Martin Phillipps & The Chills. In the 1980s and 1990s, The Chills had some significant chart success in their homeland and were a cult band in other parts of the world as one of the earliest proponents of the Dunedin sound.
Peter Livingston Holsapple is an American musician who formed, along with Chris Stamey, the dB's, a jangle-pop band from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He became the band's principal songwriter and singer after Stamey's departure. The band, with Stamey back in the fold, reformed with new material in 2005–2006.

Records subsidiary Slash Records, to release the album in the U.S. The album reached #1 on the New Zealand album charts and had significant support from American college radio. The album was awarded gold status in New Zealand and represents the peak of the Chills' popularity at home. It is considered to be one of the defining albums of the Dunedin sound. The supporting tour for Submarine Bells culminated in a triumphant home-coming concert in Dunedin Town Hall.

Sunburnt is an album by Martin Phillipps & the Chills, though more correctly by Martin Phillipps alone. Owing to visa problems, the usual Chills line-up were not able to take part in the recording sessions, and session musicians Dave Gregory and Dave Mattacks appeared on all tracks, with Phillipps handling vocal, keyboard, and guitar parts, as well as some of the percussion. Craig Leon, the album's producer, also appeared on several of the tracks.
Matthew Seligman was an English bassist, best known for his association with the new wave music scene of the 1980s. Seligman was a member of the Soft Boys and the Thompson Twins, and was a sideman for Thomas Dolby. Seligman was also a member of Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club and the Dolphin Brothers, and backed David Bowie during his performance at Live Aid in 1985.
The Starlings were an English alternative rock band, formed in 1989, utilised as the main project for New Zealand-born singer/guitarist Chris Sheehan. The group was dissolved by Sheehan around the release of their last EP. Sheehan went on to record two LPs under the name Starlings as the only member and producer/engineer.

Written by the Psychedelic Furs and produced by the band with Stephen Street, it was released in June as the album's first single. The 12" version included a remix by Hugh Padgham.
Vehicle is the first studio album by New Zealand rock group the Clean. It was released in 1990 by Flying Nun and Rough Trade Records. Much of the material was written for the band's reunion tour in the late 1980s. Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis offered to record The Clean after seeing them play in London, after which Vehicle was produced during a three-day session. The album was engineered by Ken Kennedy and notable producer Alan Moulder, who was suggested by Travis.
