Soul Rescue (Japanese: ソウルレスキュー, Hepburn: Souru Resukyū) is a Japanese fantasy action manga series written and illustrated by Aya Kanno. It was serialized in Hakusensha's shōjo manga magazine Hana to Yume from 2001 to 2002, with its chapters collected into two tankōbon volumes. [1] Soul Rescue was published in English by Tokyopop; [2] however, the rights to the series reverted to Hakusensha when Tokyopop closed its North American publishing division in 2011. [3]

Plot

Renji is a rogue angel who seems to know only how to fight. God banishes Renji to earth for his recklessness. He can only return on one condition – if he is able to save ten thousand human souls. God sends an elite angel, Kaito, to watch over him and help him with his mission. Renji's abilities are dampened before his mission because his power would be too potent for earth. In order to save the ten thousand souls, God has granted Renji the power of Soul Rescue. This power enables him to relieve souls of emotional damage and heal physical damage. The power of Soul Rescue lies hidden somewhere within Renji, and he must find it in order to use it.

Characters

Renji (レンジ)
The main character of the manga. He is known as "the Sword of God" because of his reckless nature in battle – causing extensive damage to surrounding structures, endangering his fellow men, and disobeying orders. He is banished from heaven because of his behaviour and must save ten thousand humans using the power of Soul Rescue, while sometimes fending off devils that try to cause trouble.
Kaito (カイト)
An elite angel, "the Eye of God", who is instructed to guide Renji on his mission, and to make sure he doesn't cause too much trouble. Because of his black hair and dark eyes (normally attributes of only devils – angels are usually created with light hair and light eyes), other angels would look down on him, which pushed him to work harder to earn respect.
Princess Shalala (シャララ, Sharara)
A young girl who is an heir to the throne in the kingdom where she lives. Under normal circumstances, her older sister would be heir to the throne, but she falls ill for several years and it seems that she won't live. After the mess is cleaned up, Shalala leaves the kingdom to go out and see the world and to become stronger like Renji. Later on she falls in love with Renji.
Vinny and Toi
Two devils that Renji and Kaito end up fighting on more than one occasion. Their goal is to drag souls to Hell, where they will be tormented and enslaved until they wither away or become devils.

Reception

Casey Brienza of Anime News Network gave the first volume an overall grade of C+. He noted that the series is "more shounen in its manifest narrative structure than it is shoujo", observing that this extends to the artwork, too, with "asymmetric panel layouts [that] are pretty cramped by shoujo manga standards and generally highlight the dynamic over the aesthetic." [9] A. E. Sparrow of IGN agreed, stating that Soul Rescue "treads that fine line between shojo and shonen, providing plenty of bad boy angel prettiness with some rough and tumble action scenes." Sparrow concluded that while the first volume "doesn't really break any new ground in terms of art or the basic plot", its "likeable characters and solid writing and dialogue" make it a worthwhile read. Kaori Yuki is a Japanese manga artist best known for her gothic manga such as Earl Cain, its sequel Godchild, and Angel Sanctuary. Yuki debuted professionally in 1987 with "Ellie in Summer Clothes" which ran in the manga anthology Bessatsu Hana to Yume published by Hakusensha, after placing in one of the many contests held by Hana to Yume. Her work is typically serialized in one of Hakusensha's two shōjo manga anthologies, Bessatsu Hana to Yume and Hana to Yume. In 2010, Kaori Yuki was one of many manga artists whose work would appear in the new shōjo manga anthology Aria by the publisher Kodansha on July 28, 2010.

Masami Tsuda is a Japanese manga artist. She specialises in shōjo manga, the most famous being Kare Kano: His and Her Circumstances, which is set in Kanagawa.

Forbidden Dance is a Japanese shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Hinako Ashihara. It was serialized in Shogakukan's Bessatsu Shōjo Comic magazine from the June 1997 issue to the September 1998 issue. Shogakukan collected the individual chapters into four bound volumes under the Flower Comics imprint from December 1997 to December 1998. Tokyopop licensed the manga for an English-language release in North America and published four volumes from August 2003 to March 2004. The manga went out-of-print when Tokyopop closed its North American publishing division in 2011.

Aya Kanno is a Japanese shōjo manga artist. She is the former assistant of manga artist Masashi Asaki of Psychometrer Eiji fame. Her debut was in the January 2001 issue of Hana to Yume with Soul Rescue. Thus far, her work has only been serialized in Hakusensha's shōjo manga anthologies: Hana to Yume, The Hana to Yume, Hana to Yume Plus, and now primarily in Bessatsu Hana to Yume, in which her work, Otomen, ran from 2006-2013. Also, she has completed Kokoro ni Hana wo. Her currently running series is Requiem of the Rose King.

Fairy Cube is a shōjo fantasy manga written and illustrated by Kaori Yuki. Appearing as a serial in the Japanese manga magazine Hana to Yume from February 2005 to 2006, the Fairy Cube chapters were collected into three bound volumes by Hakusensha and published from October 2005 to July 2006. A related short story, "Psycho Knocker", appeared in the October 2004 issues of the same magazine. Yuki began Fairy Cube with the intent of writing a shorter manga. Yurara is a supernatural shōjo manga by Chika Shiomi. It was serialized in Japan between 2003 and 2005 by Hakusensha in Bessatsu Hana to Yume and collected in five bound volumes. All five volumes have been published in English in North America by Viz Media. The series is about a teenage girl with strong spiritual powers named Yurara who, with the aid of an ancestral guardian spirit, dispels ghosts that haunt her high school while juggling her relationships with two boys in her class who also have spiritual powers.

<i>Otomen</i>

Otomen is a Japanese romantic comedy manga written and illustrated by Aya Kanno, which began in Bessatsu Hana to Yume in late 2006 and concluded on November 26, 2012. The series has been adapted into a live action TV drama. The series has been one of the best-selling shōjo properties in America, since being licensed by Viz Media. The series is also licensed in France by Delcourt and in Spain by Planeta DeAgostini.

Blank Slate is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Aya Kanno. It was serialized in Hakusensha's shōjo manga magazine Bessatsu Hana to Yume, ending in the March 2006 issue on January 26, 2006. The individual chapters were collected into two bound volumes, which were published by Hakusensha on September 16, 2005, and June 19, 2006. Blank Slate was licensed in English by Viz Media, who released the manga's two volumes on October 7, 2008, and December 2, 2008, with the e-book versions released on January 29, 2013, and February 12, 2013, respectively. The manga has also been localized in France by Delcourt and in Taiwan by Ever Glory Publishing.

<i>Kageki Shoujo!</i> Japanese manga series

Kageki Shoujo! is a Japanese manga series by Kumiko Saiki. It was serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Jump Kai from 2012 to 2014 and was collected in two tankōbon volumes. A sequel manga by Saiki titled Kageki Shoujo!! (かげきしょうじょ！！) has been serialized in Hakusensha's shōjo manga magazine Melody since 2015. It has been collected in ten tankōbon volumes. A reprinted version of the original series titled Kageki Shoujo!! Season Zero was published by Hakusensha in a single tankōbon volume in March 2019. The reprinted version and the sequel are licensed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment. An anime television series adaptation by Pine Jam is scheduled to air on July 3, 2021.
