Cycling

The South Africans took three medals, including silvers in the tandem (Smith and Walker) and individual time trial (by Kaltenbrun) and a bronze in the team pursuit. The team pursuit medal was awarded due to South Africa having the faster time of the two semifinal losers.

Tennis

Five tennis players, all men, competed for South Africa in 1920. It was the nation's third appearance in the sport. Winslow, the defending gold medalist in the singles, fell to Ichiya Kumagae in the semifinals and finished with the bronze medal. Kumagae had also beaten Dodd in the quarterfinals. Raymond won the other semifinal, however, and then beat Kumagae to take the gold. Both men's doubles pairs lost in the quarterfinals.

The men's 800 metres event was part of the track and field athletics programme at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The competition was held from Sunday, August 15, 1920, to Tuesday, August 17, 1920. Forty runners from 17 nations competed. No nation had more than 4 runners, suggesting the limit had been reduced from the 12 maximum in force in 1908 and 1912. The event was won by Albert Hill of Great Britain, snapping a three-Games streak of American victories and starting a four-Games streak of British wins. Bevil Rudd, the 400 metres winner in 1920, took bronze to give South Africa its first medal in the 800 metres.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tennis at the 1920 Summer Olympics – Men's singles</span> Tennis at the Olympics

The men's singles was a tennis event held as part of the tennis at the 1920 Summer Olympics programme. It was the sixth appearance of the event. A total of 44 players from 15 nations entered in the event; 41 players from 14 nations competed. The event was held from 16 to 23 August 1920 at the Beerschot Tennis Club. Nations were limited to four players each. The event was won by Louis Raymond of South Africa, the nation's second consecutive in the event. South Africa had nearly had both finalists again, as it had in 1912, but defending champion Charles Winslow fell to Japan's Ichiya Kumagae in the semifinal; Winslow took bronze by walkover against Noel Turnbull of Great Britain. Kumagae's silver was Japan's first medal in the event.
