South Fort Myers High School is a high school in Southern Fort Myers, Florida that is part of the Lee County School District.

History

South Fort Myers High School was established in 2005, partially built on condemned land bought the year prior. [3] Reportedly, its first employee was Grant Redhead, a former offensive coordinator at Cypress Lake High School brought on as the school's head football coach. [4]

In 2009, it became the first school in Lee County to have its automotive academy certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. [5]

Sex scandal

On May 17, 2016, a 15-year-old female student had sex with several male students in one of the school's bathrooms. [6] [7] According to a statement the girl made to administrators, she had been a past victim of human trafficking and only reluctantly went along with it after being pressured by the men. [8] Video of the events was filmed by some of those involved, which was then posted to Snapchat and spread across the school. [9]

After the incident, five students were suspended and a football player named William Scott was arrested and charged. [10]

Athletics

The school's athletic department operates sixteen sports teams: baseball, basketball (boys and girls), bowling, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer (boys and girls), softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. [11]

Dual enrollment

Students have the opportunity to take advantage of taking credit–granting college classes at Florida SouthWestern State College and Florida Gulf Coast University.

G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board was a court case dealing with transgender rights in the United States. The case involved a transgender boy attending a Virginia high school, who sued the local school board after he was forced to use girls' restrooms based on his assigned gender under the school board's policy. While the Fourth Circuit ruled in favor of the student based on Obama administration policy related to Title IX protections, the election of Donald Trump changed the underlying policy. A pending hearing before the Supreme Court of the United States was vacated and the case was sent back to the Fourth Circuit.
