The Speedway Grand Prix of Italy (SGP) is a speedway event that is a part of the Speedway Grand Prix Series.

History

The first ever Italian SGP was held in the 1996 season and was won by Dane Hans Nielsen. [1] The next SGP was held nine years later in 2005. The first five events were held at Santa Marina Stadium in Lonigo. From 2009 to 2013 the Italian SGP was hosted at Pista Olimpia Terenzano in Terenzano. [2]

The 2016 Individual Speedway World Championship Grand Prix Qualification was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings used to determine the three riders who qualified for the 2016 Speedway Grand Prix. The series consisted of four qualifying rounds at Goričan, St Johann, Lonigo and Abensberg, two semi-finals at Terenzano and Riga and then the Grand Prix Challenge at Rybnik. The three riders that qualified were Bartosz Zmarzlik, Piotr Pawlicki Jr. and Chris Harris.

The 2017 Individual Speedway World Championship Grand Prix Qualification was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings that were used to determine the three riders that qualified for the 2017 Speedway Grand Prix. The series consisted of four qualifying rounds at Terenzano, Slangerup, King's Lynn and Abensberg, two semi-finals at Goričan and Lonigo and then the Grand Prix Challenge at Vetlanda. The three riders that qualified were Patryk Dudek, Martin Vaculík and Fredrik Lindgren.

The 2018 Individual Speedway World Championship Grand Prix Qualification was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings that were used to determine the three riders that qualified for the 2018 Speedway Grand Prix. The series consisted of four qualifying rounds at Esbjerg, Žarnovica, Lonigo and Abensberg, two semi-finals at Olching and Terenzano and the Grand Prix Challenge at Togliatti. The three riders that qualified were Przemysław Pawlicki, Artem Laguta and Craig Cook.

The 2020 Speedway Grand Prix season was the 26th season of the Speedway Grand Prix era, and decided the 75th FIM Speedway World Championship. It was the 20th series under the promotion of Benfield Sports International, an IMG company

The 2021 Speedway Grand Prix season was the 27th season of the Speedway Grand Prix era, and decided the 76th FIM Speedway World Championship. The calendar of events was disrupted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the series was dominated by Polish venues once again, with six of the 11 races taking place in Poland. Great Britain and Germany did not hold an event, however Russia was added to the calendar for the first time. In 2020, six of the eight races had been held in Poland.

The Pista Olimpia Terenzano is a 4,000-capacity motorcycle stadium in the Terenzano Province of Udine. The stadium is situated south of Udine and north east of Pozzuolo del Friuli. The speedway track has a circumference of 400 metres.

The Santa Marina Stadium is an 5,000-capacity motorcycle stadium in the Lonigo, Italy. The stadium is situated in the southern part of Lonigo, which itself is 25km south of Vicenza. The stadium is affiliated to the Federazione Motociclistica Italiana and has a circumference of 334 metres.

The 2025 Individual Speedway World Championship Grand Prix Qualification or GP Challenge will be a series of motorcycle speedway meetings held during 2024 to determine the riders that qualified for the 2025 Speedway Grand Prix. The series consisted of four qualifying rounds at Abensberg, Debrecen, Lonigo and Žarnovica and the Grand Prix Challenge at Pardubice.

The 2024 SGP2 series will be the 48th edition of the FIM Individual Under-21 World Championship. It will once again be staged as the SGP2 class of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series after rights holders Discovery Sports Events took over promotional rights of the competition in 2022.

The 2013 Speedway Grand Prix of Italy was the eighth round of the 2013 Speedway Grand Prix season. It took place on 3 August 2013 at the Pista Olimpia Terenzano in Terenzano, Italy.
