Sports is the debut studio album by American emo band Modern Baseball released on November 27, 2012.

Contents

Background

Sports was written while the band members were attending college. [4] The band had previously released the split EP Couples Therapy with fellow Philadelphia-based emo band Marietta and embarked on a short tour during the summer of 2012. [5]

Sports was recorded in the Free Studios at Drexel University, where founding band member Jake Ewald attended. The album was engineered by Ian Farmer [6] before he joined the band himself. Looking back on recording, Ewald said "it was mostly our singer Bren doing most of the legwork 'cos we didn't have a real band yet". [7]

Release

Sports was later released by Lame-O Records in December 2012. [8] On June 22, 2013, a music video was released for "The Weekend". In June and July, the group went on a short US tour with Mixtapes, You Blew It! and Light Years. [9] Later in July, the group appeared at I Got Brains Fest. [10] In November, the group appeared at The Fest. [11]

Emo is a music genre characterized by emotional, often confessional lyrics. It emerged as a style of hardcore punk and post-hardcore from the mid-1980s Washington, D.C. hardcore scene, where it was known as emotional hardcore or emocore. The bands Rites of Spring and Embrace, among others, pioneered the genre. In the early-to-mid 1990s, emo was adopted and reinvented by alternative rock, indie rock, punk rock, and pop-punk bands, including Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Cap'n Jazz, and Jimmy Eat World. By the mid-1990s, Braid, the Promise Ring, and the Get Up Kids emerged from Midwest emo, and several independent record labels began to specialize in the genre. Meanwhile, screamo, a more aggressive style of emo using screamed vocals, also emerged, pioneered by the San Diego bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow. Screamo achieved mainstream success in the 2000s with bands like Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Story of the Year, Thursday, the Used, and Underoath.
