Spuds is an unincorporated community in St. Johns County, Florida, United States. The community is situated in a region that depends economically on potato growing and other agriculture. As well as potatoes, the land around Spuds provides gladioli. [1] [2] A camp for German prisoners of war was built in Spuds during World War II, close to the intersection between State Roads 206 and 207. [3]
Spuds is located at 29°44′22″N81°28′18″W / 29.7394°N 81.4717°W Coordinates: 29°44′22″N81°28′18″W / 29.7394°N 81.4717°W (29.7394, -81.4717), [4] near the intersection of State Road 207, which is six miles to the south-west leads to Hastings and 25 miles to the north-east leads to St. Augustine, and County Road 13, which eventually leads to Jacksonville, 50 miles to the north. A Florida East Coast Railway line formerly ran through Spuds from St. Augustine to Palatka, with a stop also called Spuds. [5] Today this line is part of the Palatka-to-St. Augustine State Trail. [6]

It was formerly an incorporated town, but it was dissolved in 2018 after a vote by residents. The population was 580 at the 2010 census. As of 2018, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau to be 648.

The Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail (PLB) corridor stretches nearly 47 miles (76 km) from the vicinity of Lake Butler, Florida to Palatka, Florida. The project is located along the former Georgia Southern and Florida Railway right-of-way and the trail is being constructed on top of the existing abandoned railroad bed through Putnam, Clay, Bradford, and Union counties.
The South Dade Rail Trail (SDRT) is a rail trail, run by Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation, that follows the old Florida East Coast Railway rail corridor for 20.5 miles, from Miami to Homestead in South Florida, traversing a diversity of urban, suburban and semi-rural environments.
