Sreenivasa Rao Jammalamadaka,also known as J.S. Rao,is a statistician specializing in directional statistics,Goodness of fit tests,Spacings,and aspects of large sample efficiencies and inference. He was born in Munipalle,Andhra Pradesh,India,and currently is a naturalized US citizen. He now resides and works at the University of California,Santa Barbara as a Distinguished Professor in Statistics. [1] He is known for his important contributions to circular statistics and to tests and estimation based on spacings.
J.S. Rao was educated for a year at the YRS and VRN College in Chirala,followed by the Indian Statistical Institute,Kolkata (B. Stat.1964,M.Stat. 1965,and Ph.D. 1969),where he received education from notable professors including P.C. Mahalanobis,C. R. Rao,J.B.S. Haldane,and D. Basu. He held academic positions at the Indiana University,Bloomington and the University of Wisconsin,Madison,before settling at the University of California,Santa Barbara from 1976. He was instrumental in establishing the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability at the University of California,Santa Barbara,for which he served as its first Chairman. He now holds the position as a Distinguished Professor at the University of California,Santa Barbara.
J.S. Rao is the author of over 200 publications and has written 3 scholarly books and edited conference proceedings and other special volumes. He has guided 46 Ph.D. students [2] thus far. For his research guidance and mentoring activity at UCSB and worldwide,the University of California,SB recognized him in 2017 with an Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award. [3] His students and co-workers brought out a Festschrift in his honor in 2011. [4] In 2012 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Forest Sciences by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. J.S. Rao is an Elected a Member of the International Statistical Institute (1977),Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1990),Fellow of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (1990),Fellow of the American Statistical Association (1993), [6] and an Honorary Fellow of the Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (2014). He received an Award for Academic Excellence from his compatriots,the Telugu Association of North America in 1997. In 2019,he received the C. R. Rao Lifetime Achievement Award [7] from the Indian Society for Probability and Statistics.
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao was an Indian-American mathematician and statistician. He was professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and research professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao was honoured by numerous colloquia,honorary degrees,and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend" whose work has influenced not just statistics,but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics,genetics,anthropology,geology,national planning,demography,biometry,and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time.
Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao,,is an Indian chemist who has worked mainly in solid-state and structural chemistry. He has honorary doctorates from 86 universities from around the world and has authored around 1,800 research publications and 56 books. He is described as a scientist who had won all possible awards in his field except the Nobel Prize.

He is one of the eponyms of the Rao–Blackwell theorem. He was the first African American inducted into the National Academy of Sciences,the first African American full professor at the University of California,Berkeley,and the seventh African American to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics. In 2012,President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Blackwell the National Medal of Science.

He was born in Sirohi,Rajasthan,India in a Jain family and now resides and works in Leeds. He is known for his series of tests of multivariate normality based measures of multivariate skewness and kurtosis as well as work on the statistical measures of shape.
Lawrence David (Larry) Brown was Miers Busch Professor and Professor of Statistics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. He is known for his groundbreaking work in a broad range of fields including decision theory,recurrence and partial differential equations,nonparametric function estimation,minimax and adaptation theory,and the analysis of census data and call-center data.

Anil kumar Bhattacharyya was an Indian statistician who worked at the Indian Statistical Institute in the 1930s and early 40s. He made fundamental contributions to multivariate statistics,particularly for his measure of similarity between two multinomial distributions,known as the Bhattacharyya coefficient,based on which he defined a metric,the Bhattacharyya distance. This measure is widely used in comparing statistical samples in biology,genetics,physics,computer science,etc.
Jianqing Fan is a statistician,financial econometrician,and data scientist. He is currently the Frederick L. Moore '18 Professor of Finance,Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering,Professor of Statistics and Machine Learning,and a former Chairman of Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering (2012–2015) and a former director of Committee of Statistical Studies (2005–2017) at Princeton University,where he directs both statistics lab and financial econometrics lab since 2008.

Narinder Kumar Gupta is a research scientist,educator,and engineer. Born 22 August 1942 in Mirpur,Jammu and Kashmir,India,is Professor of Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. Gupta works in the area of large deformations of metals and composites at low,medium and high rates of loading. His research stimulates the development of constitutive behaviour of materials,understanding of the basic mechanics of large deformation,design for crashworthiness of road and air vehicles,design for safety in defence applications and in design of metal forming processes.
Bhagavatula Lakshmi Surya Prakasa Rao is an Indian statistician. He was born on 6 October 1942 in Porumamilla,Andhra Pradesh. He completed his B.A. (Honours) course in Mathematics from Andhra University in 1960 and moved to the Indian Statistical Institute,Kolkata,where he completed his M.Stat in Statistics in 1962. He graduated with a Ph.D in Statistics in 1966 from Michigan State University under Herman Rubin. He won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Mathematical Sciences in 1982 from the Government of India,the Outstanding Alumni award from the Michigan State University in 1996,and the National Award in memory of P V Sukhatme in 2008 from the Government of India. The Indian Society for Probability and Statistics awarded him the C R Rao Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. He is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1983),Indian National Science Academy (1984),Indian Academy of Sciences (1992),and National Academy of Sciences (1993).

Rabindra Nath Bhattacharya is a mathematician/statistician at the University of Arizona. He works in the fields of probability theory and theoretical statistics where he has made fundamental contributions to long-standing problems in both areas. Most notable are (1) his solution to the multidimensional rate of convergence problem for the central limit theorem in his Ph.D. thesis published in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society and further elaborated in a research monograph written jointly with R. Ranga Rao and (2) the solution of the validity of the formal Edgeworth expansion in collaboration with J.K. Ghosh in 1978. He has also contributed significantly to the theory and application of Markov processes,including numerous co-authored papers on problems in groundwater hydrology with Vijay K. Gupta,and in economics with Mukul Majumdar. Most recently his research has focused on nonparametric statistical inference on manifolds and its applications. He is a co-author of three graduate texts and four research monographs. He is married to Bithika Gouri Bhattacharya,with a daughter,a son,and four grandchildren.
