St. Cloud Area School District 742 is a school district headquartered in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

History

In 2016 the district had about 10,000 students. [2]

From 2001 to 2016, the number of students who were learning English as a second language increased by 3.5 times. In 2016 it had around 2,000 students categorized as such, with many being from Somalia. [2]

Willie Jett served as superintendent until he retired in 2021. [3]

Laurie Putnam became the superintendent in 2021, making her the district's first female superintendent. All of the members of the board of education voted to hire her. [4]

District boundary

In Stearns County the district includes the county's portions of St. Cloud and Clearwater, all of St. Joseph, St. John's University, and Waite Park, most of St. Augusta, and sections of Rockville and Sartell. [5]

In Sherburne County the district includes the county's portion of St. Cloud and the majority portion of Clear Lake. [6]

In Benton County the district includes the majority of that county's part of St. Cloud. [7]

In Wright County the district includes the county's portion of Clearwater. [8]

The school's first building was built in 1917 at 233 12th Avenue South. Another building was added in the 1970s to accommodate the student population. A new facility was completed in 2019.

The St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, consists of two counties in central Minnesota, anchored by the city of St. Cloud. In the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 201,093; a July 1, 2012, Census Bureau estimate placed the population at 190,014. As of the 2020 census, the population was 199,671.
