The St. Francis Xavier X-Men ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the St. Francis Xavier X-Men athletics program of St. Francis Xavier University. The team is a member of the Atlantic University Sport conference and compete in U Sports. The team plays their home games at the Charles V. Keating Millennium Centre in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.^[1]

History

St. Francis Xavier formed its first varsity ice hockey team in 1905. That season the X-Men competed with other local colleges for the inaugural Hewson Cup, donated by E.E. Hewson. Rules stipulated that the first team to win the trophy three times would be allowed to keep the cup. SFX proceeded to win the title in the first three years of contention and lay permanent claim to the trophy. A second trophy was made, called the Sumner Cup, however, due to St. Francis being accused of knowingly using ineligible players (despite no governing body or official eligibility rules at the time) SFX was not included in competition for the second trophy. After returning from World War I, the animus against St. Francis had ebbed and the X-Men were one of the founding member of a new intercollegiate conference, the Maritime Intercollegiate Athletic Association. St. Francis Xavier swiftly became one of the league's best teams and won several championships in the interwar years. SFX left the MIAA sometime in the early 30s but the team was still invited to participate in the conference tournament each year. During this time, St. Francis also played in a local senior league and competed for the Allan Cup on multiple occasions.

During World War II, St. Francis was one of three teams who attempted to play for the duration but the program was eventually forced to suspend operations in 1944. It returned after a 1-season break and became the dominant force in the MIAA. The X-Men won every single conference tournament from 1950 to 1959 (The 1953 tournament was cancelled due to a bleacher collapse) and were by far the best team of the maritime colleges. In 1954, the MIAA teams ended their senior hockey play and focused solely on the college level. When the CIAU championship began in 1963, SFX was the first entrant from MIAA but the X-Men had trouble winning on the national stage. Despite making 6 appearance in the first 15 years of competition, St. Francis Xavier failed to make an appearance in the finals.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the fortunes of the program changed and the once-lofty X-Men became a middling team at best for most of the next 15 years. St. Francis Xavier did not regain its former status until the late 90s. Even then, it wasn't until 2004 that the team won another league championship, however, that year also saw St. Francis win its first national championship.^[2] SFX has made several trips to the national tournament in the years since with their best finishes coming in 2016 and 2018 as runners-up (as of 2023).

The U Sports Men's Ice Hockey Championship, is a Canadian university ice hockey tournament conducted by U Sports, and determines the men's national champion. The tournament involves the champions from each of Canada's four regional sports conferences. The David Johnston University Cup is awarded to the winners.

The St. Francis Xavier X-Men and X-Women are the men's and women's athletic teams that represent St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Their primary home turf is Oland Stadium located at the University's campus.

The 2010 WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was played between March 12 and March 20, 2010 at five conference arenas and the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. North Dakota received the Broadmoor Trophy as the tournament's champions, and was awarded the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

The 2011–12 QMJHL season was the 43rd season of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The regular season, which consisted of 17 teams playing 68 games each, began in September 2011 and ended in March 2012. This season was Blainville-Boisbriand Armada's first season in the league, as the team relocated to Boisbriand from Verdun where they played as the Montreal Junior Hockey Club from 2008 to 2011. The league lost one of his charter teams when the Lewiston Maineiacs folded during after the previous season, the QMJHL later announce an expansion team to Sherbrooke for the 2012–13 season. The 2012–13 WHL season was the 47th season of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The regular season began in September 2012 and ended in March 2013. The Portland Winterhawks won their third Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy with the best record in the regular season. The playoffs began in late March 2013 and ended in mid-May 2013, with the Winterhawks defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings in a rematch of the 2012 final to win their third Ed Chynoweth Cup, their first since 1997–98, and a berth in the 2013 Memorial Cup tournament, which was held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The Saskatoon Blades also participated in the Memorial Cup tournament by virtue of hosting it.

The 2012–13 OJHL season is the 19th season of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) and the third since the league existed as two separate bodies in 2009–10. The twenty-two teams of the North, South, East and West Divisions will play 55-game schedules.

The 2015–16 QMJHL season is the 47th season of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The regular season began on September 10, 2015, and ended on March 19, 2016.

The 2016–17 QMJHL season is the 48th season of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The regular season began on September 22, 2016, and ended on March 18, 2017.

The 2017–18 WHL season was the 52nd season of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The regular season began on September 22, 2017, and ended on March 18, 2018. The Moose Jaw Warriors finished the season with the league's best record. The playoffs began on March 22, 2018, and ended on May 13; the winning team, the Swift Current Broncos, were awarded the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth in the 2018 Memorial Cup tournament, held at the Brandt Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan from May 18 to 27, 2018. The Regina Pats automatically qualified for the tournament as hosts.

The UNB Reds men's ice hockey team is an collegiate ice hockey team representing the UNB Reds athletics program of University of New Brunswick. The team is a member of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference and compete in U Sports. The team plays their home games at the Aitken University Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

The Saint Mary's Huskies men's ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the Saint Mary's Huskies athletics program of Saint Mary's University. The team is a member of the Atlantic University Sport conference and compete in U Sports. The team plays their home games at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Queen's Gaels men's ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the Queen's Gaels athletics program of Queen's University at Kingston. The team is a member of the Ontario University Athletics conference and compete in U Sports. The Gaels play their home games at the Memorial Centre Arena in Kingston, Ontario.

The Manitoba Bisons men's ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the Manitoba Bisons athletics program of University of Manitoba. The team is a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association conference and compete in U Sports. The Bisons play their home games at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Carleton Ravens men's ice hockey team is an active ice hockey program representing the Carleton Ravens athletic department of the Carleton University. The team was organized at least as far back as 1949, playing then at the intermediate level. The team was previously dormant for over 30 years, however, the program has been continually active since 2008.

The Concordia Stingers men's ice hockey team is an active ice hockey team representing the Concordia Stingers athletics program of Concordia University. The team is a member of the Ontario University Athletics conference and competes in U Sports. The Stingers play their home games at the Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal, Quebec.

The Alberta Golden Bears ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas athletics program of University of Alberta. The team is a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association conference and compete in U Sports. The Golden Bears play their home games at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Saskatchewan Huskies men's ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the Saskatchewan Huskies athletics program of University of Saskatchewan. The team is a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association conference and compete in U Sports. The Huskies play their home games at the Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The UBC Thunderbirds men's ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the UBC Thunderbirds athletics program of University of British Columbia. The team is a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association conference and compete in U Sports. The Thunderbirds play their home games at the Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia.
