Mangalore, officially known as Mangaluru, is the major port city of the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountain range about 352 km (219 mi) west of Bangalore, the state capital. Mangalore is the state's only city to have all four modes of transport—air, road, rail and sea. The population of the urban agglomeration was 619,664 according to the 2011 national census of India,It is best known for being one of the locations of the Indian strategic petroleum reserves.

Mangalore University (MU) is a public university in Konaje, Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. MU has jurisdiction over the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu. The university imparts higher education in field of arts, commerce, science, law and management. In the eighties and early nineties, prestigious engineering colleges such as the National Institute of Technology-Surathkal and Manipal Institute of Technology-Manipal were constituent colleges of and affiliated to Mangalore University. These colleges have since been granted deemed university status by the Government of India. The Most Holy Redeemer Church is a historic Roman Catholic Church situated in the locality of Belthangady. The current structure of the church was built in 2012 during the tenure of Fr. James Dsouza. The original structure was constructed near the site of the present-day church building. It is the one of the oldest churches in Belthangady.
