History

It was built in 1844 by the architect Lewis Vulliamy, and the eastern parts were added in 1903 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. [1] It was paid for with £5,000 of his own money by Robert Boothby Heathcote, the then rector of All Saints, Chingford, who was concerned about the poor condition of that church. [2]

On 28 June 1954, the church was designated a Grade II* listed building. [1]

Present day

The parish of Chingford is in the Archdeaconry of West Ham of the Diocese of Chelmsford. [3] The parish worships in the Anglo-Catholic tradition of the Church of England. [3]

The Church of All Saints, Chingford, also known as Chingford Old Church, is a Grade II* listed Church of England church at Old Church Road, Chingford, London E4. Parts of the church date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, but it now forms part of the parish of St Peter and St Paul, Chingford, which took over its role as the parish church in 1844. The church stands on the summit of Chingford Mount and has views westwards towards the reservoirs of the Lea Valley.

Thomas Hellyer (architect)

Thomas Hellyer was an English architect of the mid-Victorian era. He was based on the Isle of Wight and was "the leading Island-based architect of the period", but his works can also be found on the mainland—principally in Hampshire—but also further afield. Described by Pevsner as a "very individualistic" and "remarkable" architect, his output included churches, houses, schools and hospitals across the island, during a period of rapid urban development. Many of his buildings have listed status and he "made important contributions to the appearance of the city" of Portsmouth through his extensive work in the area.
