History

The Day of Ukrainian Statehood (Ukrainian : День Української Державності, romanized: Den Ukrainskoi Derzhavnosti) was established by decree of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2021 during the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian independence and was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on 31 May 2022. [1] It was celebrated for the first time on 28 July 2022. [2] [3]

The day of 28 July was celebrated in Ukraine before the introduction of national holiday to commemorate the day of the Baptism of Kyiv, which occurred under the rule of Vladimir the Great (Volodymyr the Great) in 988. [4]

After the Bishops' Council was held on 24 May 2023, it became known that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) would ask the authorities to postpone Statehood Day, as well as Defenders Day, due to a calendar reform  [ uk ], because the holiday of Vladimir the Great in the OCU and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) would be celebrated on 15 July from 2024. [5] On 28 June, President Zelenskyy submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law that moves Statehood Day from 28 July to 15 July. [6] [7] The parliament approved this law on 14 July, with 241 deputies supporting the law. [8] The adoption of the law came too late to be signed into law by President Zelenskyy before 15 July, so 2023 became the last year in which the holiday was celebrated on 28 July. [9]

Derussification in Ukraine is a process of removing Russian influence from the post-Soviet country of Ukraine. Derussification started after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and intensified with the demolition of monuments to Lenin during Euromaidan in 2014 and the further systemic process of decommunization in Ukraine. The Russo-Ukrainian War gave a strong impetus to the process. The process manifests itself in the renaming of toponyms named after Russian statesmen and cultural figures, or those that are believed to reflect Russianism and the Russian worldview, or are otherwise associated with Russia. Also part of the process is the dismantling of objects of the Russian rule. As of April 8, 2022, according to a poll by the sociological group Rating, 76% of Ukrainians support the initiative to rename streets and other objects whose names are associated with Russia. In March 2023, the Ukrainian parliament passed a law that forbade all toponymy with names associated with Russia.
