Stuart Polak, Baron Polak CBE (born 28 March 1961) [1] is a British Conservative politician and life peer in the House of Lords.
Stuart Polak was born in Liverpool, England. [2] He attended the Childwall Hebrew Congregation, a synagogue in Liverpool, where he was a chazan, or cantor, on Jewish High Holidays. [2] He took educational trips to Israel from the age of fifteen. [2]
Polak was a youth officer at the Edgware United Synagogue in Edgware, northwest London. [2] He served as an officer of the Board of Deputies of British Jews in the 1980s. [2]
Polak joined the Conservative Friends of Israel in 1989. [2] He served as its Director for twenty-six years, until August 2015; [2] he now serves as its honorary president. [2] He also serves as chairman of TWC Associates and as a senior consultant to Jardine Lloyd Thompson. [3]
Polak was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for political service in the 2015 New Year Honours. [4] He was created a life peer taking the title Baron Polak, of Hertsmere in the County of Hertfordshire on 2 October 2015. [5]
On 3 November 2017, the BBC's Diplomatic correspondent James Landale reported that Polak had accompanied Priti Patel, the Secretary of State for International Development when she had held a series of meetings in Israel in August 2017 without telling the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. They met Yair Lapid, the leader of Israel's centrist Yesh Atid party, and visited several organisations where official departmental business was discussed. Those meetings, and others later, led to Patel's resignation from the Cabinet on 8 November 2017. [6] In 2021, former Foreign Minister Sir Alan Duncan published his diaries, in which Polak featured as a frequent opponent of his fellow Conservative Duncan, allegedly operating in tandem with CFI colleague Eric Pickles to ensure the pro-Palestinian Duncan did not acquire certain governmental positions. John Charles Baron is a British Conservative politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Basildon and Billericay, previously Billericay, since 2001. He has freuqently rebelled against his party, specifically in his calling for a referendum on the European Union (EU) before the 2015 election and in opposing military intervention in Iraq, Libya and Syria.

The representation of women in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom has been an issue in the politics of the United Kingdom at numerous points in the 20th and 21st centuries. Originally debate centred on whether women should be allowed to vote and stand for election as Members of Parliament. The Parliament Act 1918 gave women over 21 the right to stand for election as a Member of Parliament. The United Kingdom has had three female Prime Ministers: Margaret Thatcher (1979–1990), Theresa May (2016–2019), and Liz Truss (2022). The publication of the book Women in the House by Elizabeth Vallance in 1979 highlighted the under-representation of women in Parliament. In more modern times concerns about the under-representation of women led the Labour Party to introduce and, decades later, abandon all-women short lists, something which was later held to breach discrimination laws.

Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue, a member of the Movement for Reform Judaism, is a Reform Judaism congregation at 118 Stonegrove, Edgware in the London Borough of Barnet. It was formed in 2017 as a result of the merger between the Edgware & District Reform Synagogue (EDRS) and the Hendon Reform Synagogue (HRS) communities. EDRS originated in 1934 as "Edgware and District Progressive Jewish Fellowship" and in February 1935 became “Edgware and District Reform Synagogue”. HRS was founded in 1949 and its first building, in 1955, was in Danescroft Avenue. The merged community, established in 2017, is located on the site of the former EDRS. It is now the largest synagogue in Europe; its membership includes 2500 families.

Charles Bender was a British-Canadian rabbi. He was spiritual leader of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue from 1928 to 1940, and of the Adath Israel Congregation from 1940 until his retirement in 1969, remaining rabbi emeritus at the latter institution until his death. He also served as founding president of the Montreal Board of Jewish Ministers, editor of the Canadian Jewish Chronicle, dean of the Jewish Teachers' Seminary of Montreal, and national chairman of the Jewish National Fund in Canada.
