Studios 301 is an Australian recording studio and is both the longest-running professional recording studio in the southern hemisphere and the largest studio complex in Australia. [1]
The studio was founded in 1926 under the Columbia Graphophone Company as the Columbia Graphophone Studios. In 1954, the studios relocated from their original Homebush site to 301 Castlereagh Street in Sydney, and were renamed EMI Studios. [2] In 1957, Slim Dusty recorded his hit "A Pub with No Beer" at Studios 301, was the biggest-selling record by an Australian to that time, the first Australian single to go gold and the first and only 78 rpm record to be awarded a gold disc. [3]
In 1978, the studios were again completely re-equipped and renamed as Studios 301. [4] In 1996, Studios 301 was purchased by its own management team. Two years later, the studios were purchased by producer/engineer and SAE Institute founder Tom Misner, who relocated and rebuilt the studios at 18 Mitchell Road, in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria. [5] Studios 301 was part of SAE from 1998 until early 2011, when Navitas bought SAE Group from Misner, who retained ownership of the studios. [6]
In 2017, Studios 301 relocated to a new studio complex located at 3 Ellis Avenue in Alexandria. The new 'Tier One' facility, designed by Misner and Jochen Veith, nearly doubled the size of Studios 301's previous location, with 4 recording/mixing rooms, 3 mastering studios and 4 pre-production room.
In 2020, Studios 301 and audio engineer Simon Cohen launched their 'pay it forward' initiative, allowing musicians to gift a free online audio mix to an artist of their choice. [7]
In 2021, the studio partnered with Abbey Road Institute as a site of the school's music production program. [8]
Abbey Road Studios is a recording studio at 3 Abbey Road, St John's Wood, City of Westminster, London, England. It was established in November 1931 by the Gramophone Company, a predecessor of British music company EMI, which owned it until Universal Music took control of part of EMI in 2013.
Slim Dusty, AO MBE was an Australian country music singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He was an Australian cultural icon and one of the country's most awarded stars, with a career spanning nearly seven decades and producing numerous recordings. He was known to record songs in the legacy of Australia, particularly of bush life and renowned Australian bush poets Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson that represented the lifestyle. The music genre was coined the "bush ballad", a style first made popular by Buddy Williams, the first artist to perform the genre in Australia, and also for his many trucking songs.
Regal Zonophone Records was a British record label formed in 1932, through a merger of the Regal and Zonophone labels. This followed the merger of those labels' respective parent companies – the Columbia Graphophone Company and the Gramophone Company – to form EMI. At the merger, those records from the Regal Records catalogue were prefixed 'MR' and those from the Zonophone Records catalogue were prefixed 'T'. Record releases after the merger continued using only the 'MR' prefix.
Slim Dusty has released 122 records in his career. By March 1976, Dusty had achieved 37 gold and two platinum records. By November 1979, this Dusty had amassed 63 gold and platinum albums.
EMI Records Ltd. is a British record label owned by Universal Music Group. The original EMI Records was founded by the music company of the same name in 1972 as its flagship label, and launched in January 1973 as the successor to its Columbia and Parlophone record labels. The label was later launched worldwide. It has a branch in India called "EMI Records India", run by director Mohit Suri. In 2014, Universal Music Japan revived the label in Japan after splitting of EMI Records Japan as EMI Records. In June 2020, Universal revived the label as the successor to Virgin EMI, with Virgin Records now operating as an imprint of EMI Records.

Joy McKean, born 14 January 1930, is an Australian country music singer-songwriter and wife and manager of the late Slim Dusty. Known as the "grand lady" of Australian country music, McKean is recognised as one of Australia's leading songwriters and bush balladeers and wrote several of Dusty's most popular songs. In 1973, she was awarded the first ever Golden Guitar, for writing "Lights on the Hill". She was inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown in 1983. The 2020 documentary film Slim and I told the story of her life and musical partnership with Dusty. The McKean-Dusty musical partnership produced over 100 albums, sold eight million records in Australia alone, and earned 45 Golden Guitars.
"When the Rain Tumbles Down in July" is an Australian country music song written by Slim Dusty. It has been covered by several other artists including Lee Kernaghan, Graeme Connors as well as Dusty's daughter Anne Kirkpatrick. The song was recorded in November 1946 and it is recognised as being Dusty's first commercial recording.

Ralph Ernest "Slim" Newton is an Australian country music singer-songwriter. In June 1972 he issued an extended play, The Redback on the Toilet Seat, which peaked at No. 3 on the Go-Set National Top 40 Singles Chart and sold over 100,000 copies. In 1973 Newton won a Golden Guitar Trophy at the inaugural Country Music Awards of Australia for Top Selling Record for the EP. Newton continued his career as a part-time musician and released several albums while also working in his trade as a welder. In 1977 the Country Music Association of Australia inducted him into the Australasian Country Music Hands of Fame, and then in 2009 into the Australian Roll of Renown.
