Sunnfjord (English: the southern fjord - in contrast to Nordfjord) is a traditional district in Western Norway located in Vestland county. It includes the municipalities of Askvoll, Fjaler, the southernmost parts of Kinn, Sunnfjord, and the southernmost parts of Bremanger. It covers an area of about 4,476 square kilometres (1,728 sq mi) and has a population (2016) of 43,324–about 8% of the population of Vestland county. [1]

The central geographical characteristic of the Sunnfjord region are the fjords: Dalsfjorden and Førdefjorden. It is a tourist region, with waterfalls, fishing, white-water rafting, glaciers, hiking, and scenery–including Jostedalsbreen National Park. [1]
The area was the site of the largest air battle over Norway during World War II, and a museum is dedicated to the event in Naustdal. There are two airports in Sunnfjord: Førde Airport, Bringeland, just outside the town of Førde, and Florø Airport, just outside the town of Florø. The European route E39 highway passes through the region, going north and south.
Sogn og Fjordane was a county in western Norway, up to 1 January 2020 when it was merged to become part of Vestland county. Bordering previous counties Møre og Romsdal, Oppland, Buskerud, and Hordaland, the county administration was in the village of Hermansverk in Leikanger municipality. The largest town in the county was Førde.
Flora is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative centre was the town of Florø, which was founded in 1860. Florø has 8,957 inhabitants (2017) and the Eikefjord area in the east has 387 inhabitants (2017). Other village areas in the municipality included Rognaldsvåg, Stavang, Grov, Norddalsfjord, Nyttingnes, Steinhovden, and Brandsøy.

The Øyrane area in the town of Førde was a large industrial/commercial area for the region. The European Route E39 highway passed through the municipality, and it passed by the lake Holsavatnet.
Naustdal is a former municipality in the old Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative centre was the village of Naustdal, which has 1,188 inhabitants (2017). Other villages in Naustdal include Indrevevring and Helle. The municipality became part of Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county on 1 January 2020.
Bruland is a farming village located about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) east of the town of Førde in the municipality of Sunnfjord in Vestland county, Norway. The population (2001) of Bruland was 212. It is located just south of the river Jølstra, along the European route E39 highway. The lake Holsavatnet is located about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) east of Bruland and the small Moskog area lies at the western end of that island. The name of the hamlet, Bruland literally means 'land of bridges'. Historically, many of the people who worked on the local farm took the surname Bruland.
Førde Airport is a regional airport located at Bringelandsåsen in the municipality of Sunnfjord, about 16 kilometers (10 mi) south of the town of Førde in Vestland county, Norway. Owned and operated by the state-owned Avinor, the airport has a single 1,019-meter (3,343 ft) runway numbered 07–25. It is served by Widerøe, which operates De Havilland Canada Dash 8 aircraft to Oslo.
Sande is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located along the Gaula River, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from where the river meets the Dalsfjorden. Sande Church is located in this village, serving the people of the central part of the municipality.
Eikefjord is a former municipality in the Sunnfjord district in the old Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The 145-square-kilometre (56 sq mi) municipality existed from 1923 until 1964 when it joined Flora Municipality. The administrative center of the former municipality was the village of Eikefjord, where Eikefjord Church is located. The municipality of Eikefjord was located at the end of the Eikefjorden, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) east of the town of Florø. The lake Endestadvatnet was part of the municipality. The municipality encompassed the immediate area around the village of Eikefjord and to the east and south of the village.
Førde Fjord is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. It is the longest of all the fjords in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. Førdefjorden passes through the municipalities of Sunnfjord, Askvoll, and Kinn. The fjord begins at the town of Førde, at the estuary of the river Jølstra, which comes from the lake Jølstravatn. The island of Svanøya lies just outside the mouth of Førdefjorden. There are roads along the shoreline on both the north and south sides of the fjord, and the European route E39 highway runs past the town of Førde, near Førdefjorden.
The Gaula is a river located in the Sunnfjord region of Vestland county, Norway. The 63-kilometre (39 mi) long river is the central part of the Gaularvassdraget watershed basin which covers about 626 square kilometres (242 sq mi) across the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The river is a good salmon fishing river. The river runs across the whole municipality of Gaular, and the river is the namesake of the municipality.
Førde Airport, Øyrane was a regional airport located at Øyrane in Førde, Norway. The municipal airport first opened as a water aerodrome, receiving a runway in 1970. Scheduled services started the following year, with Widerøe providing flights to Bergen with the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. In addition, Førdefly and Airlift operated general aviation services from the airport. Førde Airport, Øyrane was located in the middle of an industrial area and had severe safety shortcomings, such as lacking an instrument landing system and had a control tower without sight of the entire runway. Øyrane was therefore replaced with Førde Airport, Bringeland in 1986.

Naustdal is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the Førdefjorden at the mouth of the river Nausta, which flows through the Naustdalen valley. The village sits about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) northwest of the town of Førde and about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northeast of the village of Helle. Kletten Hill rises southeast of the village.
The Naustdal Tunnel is a road tunnel connecting the municipalities of Kinn and Sunnfjord in Vestland county, Norway. The 5,970-metre (19,590 ft) long tunnel is part of the Norwegian National Road 5 highway which connects the towns of Florø and Førde by going through the Ramsdalsheia mountains. The northern end of the tunnel is located about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) southeast of the village of Eikefjord and the southern end of the tunnel is located on the northern edge of the village of Naustdal.

The fjord begins in the Norwegian Sea and passes Eastward inland through the municipalities of Sunnfjord, Askvoll, and Flora for 18 kilometres (11 mi) before meeting up with the Førdefjorden at Flokeneset.
