Sunny Jim Band was a British rock band in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They remained a performing band for almost a decade, and released two singles and a couple of albums between 1978 and 1981. Most of their work was done outside of the UK, largely in Continental Europe.
The band was formed in Norwich, England in 1975. The guitarist and singer, Martin Allen and bass guitarist John C. Barry had met while studying for A levels at Norwich City College. The drummer and singer Jack Hazebroek, originally from the Netherlands but then living and working in Norwich, joined the duo from an advertisement in the Norwich Evening News . [1] [2]
The Sunny Jim Band were originally playing heavy 1970s funk a cross between The Meters, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Grand Funk Railroad.[ citation needed ] A self-financed single "Memories" / "Pretty Little Girl" was recorded at Nest Studios in Birmingham. Copies made their way to the Netherlands and resulted in the band leaving England for a Dutch tour in 1976.
The band soon based themselves in Amsterdam living at the H88 (Herengracht 88) bar and hotel. Didier Laget (discovered during the band's visit to Tours, France) joined to fill the missing lead guitar role in 1977. During 1976 and 1977, the band played regularly at Paradiso and Melkweg ("The Milky Way") Amsterdam, supporting Tom Robinson, and The Pixies. [3] The Sunny Jim Band signed to the American impresario, Russ Carney's Tumasi Productions.
Groningen situated in the north of the Netherlands was a regular haunt for the band live during 1977, where they were approached by Herman Brood (who was often at their live shows), and who was also looking for a backing band at the time.
The band's first single "Thanks For The Music" / "Pretty Little Girl", was produced by Piet Souer and released by Phillips Holland in 1978. Jack Hazebroek left the band in 1978, and was replaced by drummer Jaap Vreenegoor. Sunny Jim Band started touring in West Germany and built up a reputation on the West-German live circuit. The band were becoming influenced by the wave of punk bands coming out of England. They were particularly influenced by The Police, Elvis Costello and by Herman Brood.[ citation needed ]
In 1979, Sierk Janszen replaced Jaap Vrenegoor on drums, joining in time to tour Hungary with the popular Hungarian band P.Mobil. They were the first Western band to play in Hungary since the Spencer Davis Group toured in the 1960s. Frank Henneke, the drummer of the Dutch band Turf, replaced Sierk Janszen who remained as part of the road crew.
Discovered in Hamburg at The Logo club by Ulf Krüger, the band were signed to Phonogram Germany in 1980, and recorded their first album, Maximum Pain, with Ulf Kruger as producer and Geoffrey Peacey as co-producer. The album was produced live in the studio in ten days in an effort to capture their live power. Frank Henneke was replaced on drums by a return to the band of Jaap Vrenegoor.
The single, "Mixed-Up" / "I Tried" was recorded in Germany, and released on the Vertigo label with Robert Jan Stipps producing. The band were looking for a more polished sound for their records, after being disappointed by the lack of positive reviews for Maximum Pain, and finally this led to Steve Nye being approached to produce their second LP, Jay.
German tours continued supporting Whitesnake, Joe Cocker and Stray Cats, and the band were recorded live in WDR Cologne TV studios and broadcast on the German television show Rockpalast.
The band returned to the UK to record their second album Jay in January, February and March 1981. This album was produced by Steve Nye at Air Studios in London, the recording engineers being Colin Fairley, and Steve Churchyard. Side two of the album opened with a reggae/glam rock fusion cover version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door".
Sunny Jim Band supported The Boomtown Rats on a German tour in 1982, and the band continued in various versions including Lutz Oldemeier on drums until 1985.
John C. Barry and Martin Allen continued writing songs in the early 1980s, and briefly worked with Bruce Woolley. They were signed by EMI Cologne as The Graduates. Jack Hazebroek joined The Graduates sessions under guidance of Wolf Maahn. Icebox, Technological Revolution and The Good Things were recorded on the then new Mitsubishi digital tape system in Cologne.
John C. Barry left to pursue a career as an artist, lyricist and bassist in Berlin in 1986.
Golden Earring were a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as The Golden Earrings. They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs "Radar Love" in 1973, which went to number one on the Dutch charts, reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, and went to number thirteen on the United States charts, "Twilight Zone" in 1982, and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984. During their career they had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts and released 25 studio albums.
Mother's Finest is an American rock band founded in Atlanta, Georgia, by the vocal duo of Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn "Doc" Murdock in 1970 when the pair met up with guitarist Gary "Moses Mo" Moore and bassist Jerry "Wyzard" Seay. Their music is a blend of funky rhythms, heavy rock guitars and expressive soul/R&B-style vocals.
Vertigo Records is a record company that originated in the United Kingdom. It was a subsidiary of the Philips/Phonogram record label, launched in 1969 to specialise in progressive rock and other non-mainstream musical styles. Today it is operated by Universal Music Germany, and the UK catalogue was folded into Mercury Records, which was absorbed in 2013 by Virgin EMI Records, which was renamed back to EMI Records in June 2020.

Dalek I Love You were a synthpop group from the Wirral, England. At various points in their existence, the band was also known as Dalek I. Record executives at Phonogram shortened the band's name without telling them for the "Freedom Fighters" single.
Roger Maxwell Chapman, also known as Chappo, is an English rock vocalist. He is best known as a member of the progressive rock band Family, which he joined along with Charlie Whitney, in 1966 and also the rock, R&B band Streetwalkers formed in 1974. His idiosyncratic brand of showmanship when performing and vocal vibrato led him to become a cult figure on the British rock scene. Chapman is claimed to have said that he was trying to sing like both Little Richard and his idol Ray Charles. Since the early 1980s he has spent much of his time in Germany and has made occasional appearances there and elsewhere.

Jingo de Lunch is a German punk band from Kreuzberg, Berlin. Most members had already a solid musical background, for instance Sepp Ehrensberger had played in the Berliner cult punk rock band called Vorkriegsjugend (1984–85), and also in Zerstörte Jugend with Tom Schwoll. Yvonne Ducksworth had previously sung in Combat Not Conform. Before they gave birth to Jingo de Lunch in April 1987, with the help of Steve Hahn and Henning Menke (bass), Tom Schwoll (guitar); Ehrensberger (guitar) and Ducksworth (vocals) played together in Manson Youth.
Carol Patricia Mas, professionally known as Carolyne Mas, is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and producer. She broke out of the Greenwich Village music scene boom of the late 1970s, along with other artists such as Steve Forbert, The Roches, and Willie Nile. She is credited with having started the Songwriter's Workshop at the Cornelia Street Cafe in 1977, which later went on to become the Songwriter's Exchange, featuring singer-songwriters such as Jack Hardy and Suzanne Vega. Although she remains relatively unknown in the United States, except for a loyal cult of fans, she managed to gain popularity in Europe and Canada, mostly due to the use of television as a promotional tool in these markets. Her records did well in the charts in Canada, but her greatest success was in Germany, where a live album, Mas Hysteria, was released by Phonogram. It was originally intended to promote her upcoming appearance on Rockpalast in January 1981, and included her most significant hit, "Sittin' in the Dark".
Allegiance were an Australian thrash metal group. They formed in 1990 in Perth and disbanded in 1997. They released two studio albums, D.e.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.o.n (1994) and Skinman (1996). According to Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, they "gained international acclaim and interest from several key figures in the heavy metal world. [Their] tight sound mixed the heavy riffs and complexities of San Francisco Bay Area thrash bands like Metallica, Testament, Slayer and Exodus with a touch of Sepultura."
Nina Hagen Band is the debut studio album by Nina Hagen Band. It was released on February 11, 1978 by CBS Records. It was the first release by German singer Nina Hagen after her 1976 expatriation from East Germany. When she arrived in Hamburg, her stepfather and singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann got her in touch with CBS. Hagen traveled to London where she was introduced to music genres such as punk and reggae, and befriended other artists including Ari Up of the band The Slits. After she returned to Germany, she met with musicians Herwig Mitteregger, Bernhard Potschka and Manfred Praeker. Joined by Reinhold Heil, they formed the Nina Hagen Band and in November 1977 signed a record deal with CBS. Nina Hagen Band was produced by the band with additional production by Tom Müller and Ralf Nowy. Most of the songs had been already written by Hagen in East Germany.
The Mission are an English gothic rock band formed in 1986. Initially known as The Sisterhood, the band was started by frontman Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams, soon adding drummer Mick Brown and guitarist Simon Hinkler.
