Survivor Japan: Palau, was the first season of Survivor Japan and it aired from April 9, 2002 to June 18, 2002. This season was set in Ngemelis Islands of Palau.

Contents

The original tribes for this season were named Bekeu (ベケウ, Bekeu) and Deleb (デレブ, Derebu), and the merge tribe was named Sage Sils (シルス賢者, Shirusu Kenja). Prior to the tribe merge, one player was sent to the ship from each tribe, and they discussed which camp to live in after the merge. At the final tribal council there seemed to be little doubt in the jury's mind on who deserved to be the Sole Survivor.

Eventually, it was diving instructor Eri Minoshima who won the season and 10,000,000 Yen by a vote of 5-0 over priest Daisuke Yoshino. There were six members of the jury, but Junko Matsuo refused to vote for either Daisuke or Eri because she did not believe that either castaway was worthy of being the Sole Survivor.

^1 Mina was evacuated for medical reasons in episode 8. As a result, that episode's tribal council was cancelled.

^2 As Daisuke and Satoshi both received three votes at the tenth tribal council, the number of votes each had received at previous tribal councils were counted. The person with the most votes would be eliminated. Daisuke had 4 votes and Satoshi had 6 votes. Therefore, Satoshi was eliminated

^3 As Eri and Junko both received two votes at the twelfth tribal council, the number of votes each had received at previous tribal councils were counted. Eri had 0 votes and Junko had 4 votes. Therefore, Junko was eliminated.

^4 In a rule specific to only the Japanese version of Survivor, if a member of the jury believed neither finalist deserved to win, they may refuse to vote. Junko was the only jury member not to vote for either Daisuke or Eri.

The major twist this season was that the team tribes were divided up by participants country of origin with one tribe, België (Belgium), being composed of contestants from Belgium and one tribe, Nederlands (Netherlands), being composed of contestants from the Netherlands. Another major twist this season came to light in episode 1, when after an initial elimination challenge the two eliminated contestants, Ernestine Schweig and Sarah Bleecker, were told that instead of being eliminated they were going to live in an area known as the "Mangrove". From then on, any contestant that either lost a challenge or voted out were sent to the Mangrove. Throughout the competition many contestants living in the Mangrove were given opportunities to re-enter the game, however it was not until episode 9, when the contestants living in the Mangrove won a challenge against the merge tribe, known as Teluk, in order to re-enter the game. Another twist that occurred this season was that of a tribal swap which took place in episode 4. Following the Mangrove contestants return to the game, a power struggle ensued between the Belgian and Dutch contestants. Ultimately, it was Belgian contestant Frank Meulder who won the season over fellow Belgian Matthias Verscheure with an overwhelming majority jury vote of 10-2. Having been influenced by the success of the Croatian version of Big Brother, channel HRT decided to launch a Croatian version of Survivor which aired from May 12, 2005 to July 7, 2005. An immediate twist this season was that each tribe was forced to take part in an elimination challenge on day one of the competition. As Ivan Krželj of the "Ammos" tribe and Ana Marija Bojko of the "Petros" tribe lost the challenge they were both eliminated from the competition. Throughout the rest of the pre-merge portion of the competition the tribes battled for a majority when the merge arrived. As many of them were considered weak by their tribes, most of the women were eliminated during this portion of the competition. When the merge arrived, the two tribes became one known as "Zoi" and the former original members of Ammos found themselves out numbered six to four. Due to this, all of the former members of Ammos, with the exception of Silvija Zelko, were almost immediately eliminated. When it came time for the final four, the contestants competed in two challenges in order to determine the final two. As the winner of the first challenge, Vazmenko Pervanu chose to eliminate the only non-former Petros member Silvija Zelko. Kristina Sesar, Vazmenko Pervanu, and Vedran Rubrik Šehić were then forced to compete in a second challenge which Vedran Rubrik Šehić won and chose to eliminate Kristina Sesar, who many considered to be the villain of the season. Unlike most versions of Survivor, the public, not the jury, chose the winner and despite the fact that Vedran Rubrik Šehić won the jury vote by a margin of 4-3, it was Vazmenko Pervanu who won this season with a public vote of 68.23% to Vedran Rubrik Šehić's 31.77%.
