Stéphane Grappelli was a French jazz violinist. He is best known as a founder of the Quintette du Hot Club de France with guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1934. It was one of the first all-string jazz bands. He has been called "the grandfather of jazz violinists" and continued playing concerts around the world well into his eighties.
Svend Asmussen was a Danish jazz violinist,known as "The Fiddling Viking". A Swing-style virtuoso,he played and recorded with many other notable jazz musicians,including Duke Ellington,Benny Goodman and Stephane Grappelli. He played publicly until 2010 when he had a blood clot,his career having spanned eight decades.

It consists of live concert recordings previously released on Ray Charles at Newport and Ray Charles in Person. The Quintet is an album by V.S.O.P. It was compiled from two concert performances:one at the Greek Theatre,University of California,Berkeley,on July 16,1977;the other at the San Diego Civic Theatre on July 18,1977. The quintet were keyboardist Herbie Hancock,trumpeter Freddie Hubbard,drummer Tony Williams,bassist Ron Carter and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. The album was originally released in October 1977 as a 2-disc LP by Columbia Records.

It was recorded 8 October 1973 at the Boarding House in San Francisco by Owsley Stanley and Vickie Babcock utilizing eight microphones mixed live onto a stereo Nagra tape recorder. Eventually,however,the soundtrack album for O Brother,Where Art Thou? surpassed its sales.
