Finswimming is an underwater sport consisting of four techniques involving swimming with the use of fins either on the water's surface using a snorkel with either monofins or bifins or underwater with monofin either by holding one's breath or using open circuit scuba diving equipment. The 6th Asian Games, also known as Bangkok 1970 were held from 9 to 20 December 1970 in Bangkok, Thailand. Seoul, South Korea, had been selected to host the 6th Games but it declined due to both financial reasons and security threats from neighboring North Korea. The previous host, Thailand, stepped in to save the Asiad. 2,400 athletes from 18 countries competed in this Asiad, where yachting made its debut.

The 1994 Asian Games (1994年アジア競技大会), also known as the XII Asiad and the 12th Asian Games (第12回アジア競技大会) or simply Hiroshima 1994 (広島1994), were held from October 2 to 16, 1994, in Hiroshima, Japan.This is first on Games'history that a country non-capital city hosted the event. The main theme of this edition was to promote peace and harmony among Asian nations. This concept was used due the historical fact that the city was the site of the first atomic bomb attack 49 years earlier. Due to the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq was suspended from the games. The games debuted the five Asian former republics of the Soviet Union: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The 1998 Asian Games, officially known as the 13th Asian Games and the XIII Asiad,, or simply Bangkok 1998, was an Asian multi-sport event celebrated in Bangkok, Thailand from December 6 to 20, 1998, with 377 events in 36 sports and disciplines participated by 6,554 athletes across the continent. The sporting events commenced on 30 November 1998, a week earlier than the opening ceremony. It is a last time that the multi-sport event would be held in Bangkok until the 2007 Summer Universiade.

The Swimming competition at the 2006 Asian Games took place December 2–7 at the Hamad Aquatic Centre in Doha, Qatar. It featured 38 events, all conducted in a long course (50m) pool.

Joscelin Yeo Wei Ling is a former Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) from Nov 2006 to Apr 2011 and a former competitive swimmer from Singapore. Yeo won 40 gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games. She also represented Singapore in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Summer Olympics. Yeo was elected as a Rhodes Scholar, but never took up the scholarship. During the 2012 Summer Olympics, she was a TV analyst for english-speaking Asian countries on ESPN Star.

Bula Choudhury is an Indian former swimmer. She is an Arjuna awardee, Padma shri awardee, former India national women's swimming champion and elected as MLA from 2006 to 2011 representing Nandanpur in West Bengal state of India.

The India men's national water polo team is the representative for India in international men's water polo. Water Polo in India is administered by the Swimming Federation of India (SFI). India's men's best performance was when they won gold at the 1951 Asian Games. The India men's national water polo team also won a silver medal at the 1970 Asian Games, losing to Japan, 4 goals to 3 in the finals. The next time India won a medal was a bronze at the 1982 Asian Games.

Quah Ting Wen is a Singaporean professional swimmer who specialises in butterfly, freestyle and individual medley events. She is currently representing DC Trident at the International Swimming League.

Water polo in India is administered by the Swimming Federation of India. India's best performance was gold medal at the 1951 Asian Games. The India men's national water polo team also won a silver medal at the 1970 Asian Games, losing to Japan 4 goals to 3 in the finals. The next time India won a medal was a bronze at the 1982 Asian Games.
