Tabi‘un

The Tābi‘un (Arabic : التابعون, also Tābi‘eenالتابعين, singular tābiالتابع), "followers" or "successors", are the generation of Muslims who followed the Sahaba ("companions" of the Islamic prophet Muhammad), and thus received Muhammad's teachings second hand. [1] A Tabi knew at least one Sahaba. [2] As such, they played an important part in the development of Islamic thought and philosophy, and in the political development of the early caliphate. The next generation of Muslims after the Tabi'un are called Tabi‘ al-Tabi‘in . The three generations make up the salaf of Islam.

Islam is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion teaching that there is only one God (Allah), and that Muhammad is the messenger of God. It is the world's second-largest religion with over 1.8 billion followers or 24% of the world's population, most commonly known as Muslims. Muslims make up a majority of the population in 50 countries. Islam teaches that God is merciful, all-powerful, unique and has guided humankind through prophets, revealed scriptures and natural signs. The primary scriptures of Islam are the Quran, viewed by Muslims as the verbatim word of God, and the teachings and normative example of Muhammad.

Muhammad prophet and founder of Islam

Muhammad was the founder of Islam. According to Islamic doctrine, he was a prophet, sent to present and confirm the monotheistic teachings preached previously by Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. He is viewed as the final prophet of God in all the main branches of Islam, though some modern denominations diverge from this belief. Muhammad united Arabia into a single Muslim polity, with the Quran as well as his teachings and practices forming the basis of Islamic religious belief.

Sunni definition

Muslims from the Sunni branch of Islam define a Tâbi`î as a Muslim who:

  1. Saw at least one of the companions of Muhammad.
  2. Was rightly guided (according to the Sunni, one who adheres to the beliefs and actions of the Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jama'ah).
  3. One who died in that state. The Khawarij are therefore not referred to as Tabi‘un even though they saw many of Muhammad's companions.

Sunni Muslims also regard the Tabi‘un as the best generation after the Sahabah. According to Sunni Muslims, Muhammad said: "The best people are those living in my generation, then those coming after them, and then those coming after (the second generation)" .

The Tabi'un are divided by most Muslim scholars into three classes: [3]

  1. The students of Sahaba who accepted Islam before the conquest of Makkah
  2. The students of Sahaba who accepted Islam after the conquest of Makkah
  3. The students of Sahaba who were not yet adults at the time of Muhammad's passing

List of Tabi‘un

The earliest of the Tabi'un to die was Zayd ibn Ma'mar ibn Zayd, 30 years after the hijra, and the last to die was Khalaf ibn Khalifa, who died in 180 A.H. Alternatively, since the status of Khalaf ibn Khalifa as a Tabee is strongly challenged by reputed scholars, the last to die from amongst them may have been Jarir bin Haazim (died 170 A.H.).Therefore, many of the Tabi'un were tasked with the preservation of Islamic traditions from the era of the Sahaba to later Muslims. Abu Muslim Al-Khawlani was a well-known tabi'i and a prominent religious figure in Damascus, Syria. He was one of the 'Eight Ascetics,' who also included Amir ibn Abd al-Qays, Uways al-Qarani, Al-Rabi ibn Khuthaym, al-Aswad ibn Yazid, Masruq ibn al-Ajda', Sufyan al-Thawrt ibn Said and Hasan al-Basri.

Al-Ahnaf Ibn Qays was a Muslim general who lived during the time of Muhammad. He hailed from the Arab tribe of Banu Tamim and was born of two noble parents. His father named him ad-Dhahhak, but everybody called him al-Ahnaf, because of a defect in his feet.

The term aṣ-ṣaḥābah refers to the companions, disciples, scribes and family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. This form is definite plural; the indefinite singular is masculine sahabi, feminine sahabia.

The Ibāḍī movement, Ibadism, or Ibāḍiyya, also known as the Ibadis, is a school of Islam dominant in Oman. It is also found in parts of Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and East Africa. The succession to Muhammad is the central issue that split the Muslim community into several divisions in the first century of Muslim history. A few months before his death, Muhammad delivered a sermon at Ghadir Khumm where he announced that Ali ibn Abi Talib would be his successor. After the sermon, Muhammad ordered the Muslims to pledge allegiance to Ali. Both Shia and Sunni sources agree that Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and Uthman ibn Affan were among the many who pledged allegiance to Ali at this event. However, just after Muhammad died, a group of approximately fourteen Muslims met at Saqifa, where Umar pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr then assumed political power, and his supporters became known as the Sunnis. Despite that, a group of Muslims kept their allegiance to Ali. These people, who became known as Shias, held that while Ali's right to be the political leader may have been taken, he was still the religious and spiritual leader after Muhammad.

Tābi‘ al-Tābi‘in is the generation after the Tabi‘un in Islam. Sunni Muslims include them among the best generations on Earth, along with the Tābi‘un and the Sahaba.

Urwah ibn Zubayr Sunni Imam and historian

'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam al-Asadi was among the seven fuqaha (jurists) who formulated the fiqh of Medina in the time of the Tabi‘in and one of the Muslim historians.

The Islamic prophet, Muhammad, specified ten of his companions who were promised paradise. Those companions named in this hadith are referred to as The Ten With Glad Tidings Of Paradise.

The event of Ghadir Khumm account of a speech given by Muhammad

The event of Ghadir Khumm is an event that took place in March 632. While returning from the Hajj pilgrimage, the Islamic prophet Muhammad gathered all the Muslims who were with him and gave a long sermon. In the sermon, as per Shia scholars, Muhammad announced that Ali ibn Abi Talib would be his successor. This sermon included Muhammad's famous declaration that "to whomsoever I am Mawla, Ali is also their Mawla."

Among Muslims, the timing of Sahabah becoming Muslims is of importance.

Sulaym ibn Qays al-Hilālī al-ʿĀmirī was one of the Tabi‘un and companions of Ali towards the end of the latter's life. Sulaym was also a loyal companion of Ali's sons Hasan and Husayn, the latter's son Ali Zayn al-'Abidin, and Muhammad al-Baqir. He authored the well-known book, Kitab Sulaym ibn Qays.

Ansar are the local inhabitants of Medina who took the Islamic Prophet Muhammad and his followers into their homes when they emigrated from Mecca (hijra).

Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah was one of the Salaf and a narrator of hadith.

Family tree of Umar

'Umar ibn al-Khattāb, sometimes referred by Sunni Muslims as 'Umar al-Farooq was from the Banu Adi clan of the Quraysh tribe. He was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and became the second Sunni Caliph following the death of Abu Bakr, the first Caliph.

Abd-Allah ibn Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy was the son of Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy and a companion of Muhammad. In contrast to his father, who is considered a munafiq by Muslims, he is well regarded by Shi'a Muslims.

Battle of the Camel battle

The Battle of the Camel, sometimes called the Battle of Jamal or the Battle of Bassorah, took place at Basra, Iraq on 7 November 656. The battle was fought between Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was the cousin and son-in-law of the deceased Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, considered the fourth Rashidun Caliph of the Sunnis and the first Imam of the Shias, and A'isha, Talhah and Zubayr who led the war against Ali claiming that they want to take revenge on the killers of the third caliph Uthman who was recently killed as a result of rebellion. Marking the second chapter of the First Fitna, the fateful battle ended with victory of Ali and defeat of Ayesha who later apologized for her wrongdoing and was pardoned by Ali.

Abu al-Sha'tha Jābir ibn Zayd al-Zahrani al-Azdi was a Muslim theologian and one of the founding figures of the Ibadis, the third major denomination of Islam. He was from the Tabi‘un, or second generation of Islam, and took leadership of the denomination after the death of Abd-Allah ibn Ibadh.
