Poulomi Ghatak is a table tennis player from West Bengal, India. She won three junior national championships as well as seven senior national championships between 1998 and 2016. In 1998 she won both the senior national and junior national championships. Poulomi has represented India at the Commonwealth Games at Melbourne in 2006 and the Commonwealth Championships between 2000 and 2008. She played at the Sydney Olympics when she was 16. She also played in the Indian Open finals in 2007. She started playing in 1992 and thereafter went on a successful upward learning curve.
The Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) is an Asian table tennis governing body formed on May 7, 1972, and recognized by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in 1975. ATTU was founded by 16 member associations, currently, 44 member associations are affiliated to ATTU.
The ITTF–ATTU Asian Cup is an annual table tennis competition held by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU). The first edition was held in 1983. The competition features men's and women's singles events, with 16 players qualifying to take part in each event, subject to a maximum of two players per association.
Yu Mengyu is a retired Chinese-born Singaporean table tennis player. Born in Liaoning, China, Yu left China in 2006 at the age of 17 to join the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) under the former Foreign Sports Talent Scheme. In the same year, Yu made her international debut for Singapore.
Table tennis at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 17 August 2016 at the third pavilion of Riocentro. Around 172 table tennis players competed in both the singles and team events. Table tennis had appeared at the Summer Olympics on seven previous occasions beginning with the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. In addition to men's and women's singles, the team events were staged for the third time since replacing doubles events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Manika Batra is an Indian table tennis player. She is the top female table tennis player in India and she is currently world number 39 in ITTF as of May 2023. She is one of the female players who use long pimple rubber. She was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2020.
Wang Manyu is a Chinese table tennis player. She won women's singles titles at the World Championships, Asian Games and Asian Championships. Wang also won an Olympic gold medal as a member of Chinese women's team in 2021.
Hina Hayata is a Japanese international table tennis player. She is the most successful player on the ITTF Challenge Series since its inception in 2017. Owing to her stature, she is able to generate more spin on both sides than most female players. She is coached by Daisuka Ishida.

The event was organised by the Japan Table Tennis Association (JTTA), under the authority of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU). It was the 32nd edition of the event, and the fourth time that it had been held in Japan.
Singapore competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pakistan women's national table tennis team represents Pakistan in international table tennis competitions. It is administered by the Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF). Members of the team compete in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and team events at competitions including continental and regional games and continental championships.
