Take Charge Brandi (foaled 7 February 2012) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A descendant of the outstanding broodmare Take Charge Lady, she was one of the leading juvenile fillies in North America in 2014. After winning only one of her first five races she sprang a 66/1 upset when winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and followed up with victories in the Delta Princess Stakes and the Grade I Starlet Stakes. After winning a listed stakes race early in 2015, a bone chip in her knee, discovered prior to her anticipated start in the Rebel Stakes, took her out of contention for the Kentucky Oaks. Returning to the track in August 2015, following two lackluster performances, she was retired in September, 2015.

Background

Take Charge Brandi is a chestnut filly with a broad white blaze bred in Kentucky by the Charming Syndicate. She was sired by Giant's Causeway who won six Group One races in Europe and was named Cartier Horse of the Year in 2000. His other progeny include Ghanaati, Footstepsinthesand, Shamardal, Rite of Passage and Aragorn. [3] He was Leading sire in North America in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Take Charge Brandi's dam Charming, was the first foal of Take Charge Lady who has also produced the Grade I winners Take Charge Indy and Will Take Charge. Trained by Todd Pletcher Charming won on her debut at Keeneland, but sustained a serious injury at Monmouth Park in July and was retired from racing. [4] Take Charge Brandi is her second foal.

As a yearling Take Charge Brandi was consigned to the Keeneland September sale, where she was bought for $435,000 by Willis Horton. [5] The filly was sent into training with the veteran D. Wayne Lukas.

Racing career

2014: two-year-old season

Take Charge Brandi made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over four and a half furlongs at Churchill Downs on June 22. Ridden by Corey Lanerie she took the lead soon after the start and drew away in the closing stages to win "very easily" [6] by two and a half lengths from Conquest Archangel. Four weeks later, the filly was moved up in class and distance for the Grade III Schuylerville Stakes over six furlongs at Saratoga Race Course and finished second to the odds-on favorite Fashion Alert. Take Charge Brandi was unplaced in her next three races. She finished fifth to Cavorting in the Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga, fifth again behind Cristina's Journey in the Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs and eighth behind the British-trained Peace And War in the Grade I Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland.

Take Charge Brandi was then sent to California to contest the thirty-first running of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies over one and one sixteenth of a mile at Santa Anita Park on November 1. Ridden for the first time by Victor Espinoza she started the 66/1 outsider of the twelve runner field. The Chandelier Stakes winner Angela Renee started as the favorite ahead of Conquest Eclipse, Puca, Cristina's Journey and Top Decile. Espinoza sent his mount into the lead soon after the start and set the pace from By The Moon, Feathered and Hennythelovepenny. She maintained her advantage into the straight with Feathered, Wonder Gal and Danette as her closest pursuers and many of the more fancied fillies beginning to struggle. Espinoza never had to resort to using his whip as Take Charge Brandi kept on in the closing stages to win by half a length from the fast-finishing Top Decile, with Wonder Gal, Feathered and Danette close behind in third, fourth and fifth. [7] After the race Espinoza said "Wayne just told me to let her run and I did that. I hit her once and she didn't seem to like it, so I didn't hit her anymore and I just let her do her thing." Lukas commented "I thought she had a great week, and today I thought we could be a factor, not that we would win it, but that we would do very well. This is the most exciting one yet". [8]

Three weeks after her Breeders' Cup, Take Charge Brandi started the 2.2/1 favorite under top weight of 122 pounds for the Grade III Delta Princess Stakes at Delta Downs. Ridden for the first time by Paco Lopez, the favorite tracked the early leader Vivian Da Bling before gaining the advantage on the final turn. In the stretch she held off the challenge of Skipalute to win by one and a half lengths, with Majestic Presence a length away in third. [9] Lukas said that the winner "showed her class today because I didn't think she handled the track very well". [10] On December 13, she returned to California to contest the Grade I Starlet Stakes, held for the first time at Los Alamitos Race Course. With Espinoza back in the irons, she went off as the favorite. Leading wire to wire, but strongly challenged in the stretch, she defeated the Todd Pletcher-trained Feathered by half a length as well as third-place finisher Maybellene and familiar rival Majestic Presence in fourth. Espinoza said, "...It seemed like when she felt them coming, she dug in and wasn't going to let them by." Lukas explained that the dramatic improvement from her lackluster summer performances was because "we decided just to leave her alone and let her run her race." [11]

2015: three-year-old season

Take Charge Brandi made her three-year-old debut with a close victory over Sarah Sis in Oaklawn Park's Martha Washington Stakes. [12] It was then decided by Take Charge Brandi's connections to try running her against males in the March 14th Rebel Stakes in the hopes of possibly competing in the Kentucky Derby instead of the Kentucky Oaks, but five days before the Rebel she was discovered to have a non-displaced bone chip in her right knee. The injury was expected to sideline the horse for two months, taking her out of Derby and Oaks contention. [13]

The filly eventually returned in the Test Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on August 8. Ridden by Luis Saez, she led the field into the straight before tiring in the closing stages and was eased down to finish last of the ten runners behind Cavorting. Following the September 19 Cotillion Stakes, where she was eased and did not finish, [2] her connections announced her retirement on September 28. [14]

On November 3, Take Charge Brandi was sold for $6 million at the Keeneland breeding stock sale to Hill 'n' Dale Farm. [15]

She was one of the leading fillies of her generation in the United States, winning 11 of her 22 races between April 2001 and November 2003, earning over $2 million. She recorded Grade I victories in the Ashland Stakes and consecutive editions of the Spinster Stakes, and also won the Alcibiades Stakes, Silverbulletday Stakes, Fair Grounds Oaks, Dogwood Stakes and Arlington Matron Stakes.

Epitome was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After losing five of her first six races she recorded her first significant win in the Pocahontas Stakes, before establishing herself as one of the best fillies of her generation in North America by taking the fourth edition of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was voted the American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 1987. She won two minor races from six starts in the following year before being retired from racing. She had a solid breeding record as a broodmare, producing eight winners including the UAE Derby winner Essence of Dubai.

Countess Diana was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1997, she dominated the juvenile fillies division in North America, winning five of her six races including the Schuylerville Stakes, Spinaway Stakes, Alcibiades Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. At the end of the year she was voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and rated the best American two-year-old filly for more than fifty years. Her subsequent racing career was relatively disappointing: she failed to win in four starts in 1998 before winning two minor races in 1999. After her retirement from racing she had limited success as a broodmare and died in 2006.

Caressing was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won five of her eighteen races in a track career which lasted from July 2000 until November 2002. As a two-year-old she won two of her first four races before recording a 47/1 upset win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, which led to her being named American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. In the following year her career was disrupted by illness but she did win the La Troienne Stakes and the Singapore Plate. After competing without success as a four-year-old she was retired from racing and had some success as a broodmare – the dam of two graded black type placed horses and multiple Grade 1 winner West Coast, Eclipse Champion 3 Year Old Male of 2018.

Proud Spell is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2007 she was rated one of the best juvenile fillies in the United States, winning her first three races including the Matron Stakes before finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was even more successful in her second season, winning four races including the Fair Grounds Oaks, Kentucky Oaks, Delaware Oaks and Alabama Stakes. She was retired from racing after a single unsuccessful appearance as a four-year-old.

Farda Amiga is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred in Kentucky, but owned and trained by Brazilian horsemen, she showed some promise racing on turf as a juvenile in 2001, winning on her racecourse debut and finishing fifth at Grade III level on her only subsequent start. In the following season she won one of her first two races on turf before being switched to run on dirt and showed improved form. After a third-place finish in the Santa Anita Oaks, she recorded an upset win in the Kentucky Oaks and then recovered from illness to win the Alabama Stakes in August. She was retired after finishing second to the American Horse of the Year Azeri in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Her record as broodmare has not been impressive.

Surfside is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in North America in 1999, winning four of her six races including the Frizette Stakes and the Hollywood Starlet Stakes as well a finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. In the spring of the following year she won the Santa Ysabel Stakes, Las Virgenes Stakes and the Santa Anita Oaks and returned from injury to win the Clark Handicap. She was retired after two unsuccessful races as a four-year-old.

Judy the Beauty is a Canadian-bred, American-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. Bred by Adena Springs in Ontario, she has been owned and trained throughout her racing career by Wesley Ward who bought her for $20,000 as a yearling. As a juvenile, she won her first three races before finishing second in the Spinaway Stakes. In a brief three-year-old season she finished second in all three of her races. In 2013 she established herself as one of the best female sprinters in North America, winning the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes and finishing second to Groupie Doll in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. She was even better at five, winning the Las Flores Handicap, Madison Stakes and Rancho Bernardo Handicap before ending her season with a win in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. After her retirement, Judy the Beauty was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2018.

After a disappointing three-year-old season when she failed to win in four starts, she emerged as a top-class turf performer in 2015. Her wins as a four-year-old included the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes, Just A Game Stakes and First Lady Stakes before recording her biggest success when defeating male opposition in the Breeders' Cup Mile. In 2016, she won her first four starts and was then sent to England, where she defeated a field of leading European milers to win the Queen Anne Stakes. On returning to North America, she extended her winning streak to eight in the Woodbine Mile. The streak included three Grade/Group 1 wins against male horses in three different countries. Although Tepin finished second in her next two starts including an effort to defend her title in the Breeders Cup Mile, she was still named the Champion Female Turf Horse for the second year in a row. Tepin was inducted to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2020 and the US National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2022.

Stellar Wind is an American Thoroughbred racehorse, known for her Eclipse Award winning three-year-old season, and later for her rivalry with the champion mare Beholder. Bred in Virginia, she raced in Maryland as a juvenile, winning one minor race from two starts. As a three-year-old, racing mainly in California, she improved to become arguably the best filly of her generation. In the spring of 2015, she won the Santa Ysabel Stakes and the Santa Anita Oaks before finishing a troubled fourth in the Kentucky Oaks. Brody's Cause is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He has won Grade I races at two and three years of age and was regarded as a contender for the 2016 Kentucky Derby. After finishing unplaced on his debut he won a maiden race and then took the Grade I Breeders' Futurity Stakes before finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. In 2016 he ran poorly in the Tampa Bay Derby before taking the Blue Grass Stakes.

Lady Eli is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse who was named the American Champion Female Turf Horse of 2017. She first came to national attention when she won the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She extended her record to a perfect six wins from six starts in the 2015 Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes but then stepped on a nail on her way back to the barn, which led to a life-threatening case of laminitis. After a lengthy recovery, Lady Eli finished second in her August 2016 return to the racetrack, then won the Flower Bowl Stakes in October. With her 2017 wins in the Gamely Stakes and Diana Stakes, she won at least one Grade I race in each of her four racing seasons.
