Takele Uma Banti (Oromo:Takala Umaa Bantii) is an Ethiopian politician who is currently serving as the CEO of Ethio-Djibouti Railways since 2024. [1] He was the Minister of Mines and Petroleum from 2020 to 2023. [2] [3] He also served as Mayor of Addis Ababa from 2018 to 2020. [4]
Takele was born in the town of Ambo,located in Shewa,Ethiopia. He holds a Master's in Business Administration from Harvard University. He then possessed a Master's in Environmental Engineering and a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering,both obtained from Addis Ababa University. He has certifications from Harvard University and the Galilee International Management Institute,as well as a Master of Science in Economics from Addis Ababa University. [5]
Takele worked for several years as an associate partner in political offices of Ethiopia and others. On 17 July 2018,he was elected as Mayor of Addis Ababa by Addis Ababa City Council saving as deputy mayor. [6] The election was made during the 5th extraordinary session in accordance with the revised proclamation by the House of people's Representatives and was succeeded by Diriba Kuma. [7] [8]
On 16 October 2019,he formed new cabinet which approved by the administration council where 19 officials from head of different offices were appointed. The session was attended by 89 members,three of the nominees were women,79 members favor of nomination while the three were against and seven were abstained. [9] [10] [11]
Takele was appointed as Minister of Mines and Petroleum of Ethiopia from 18 August 2020 to 14 January 2023. [12] [13] As a minister of mines and Petroleum,his strategic leadership led to increase in gold exports,solidifying the mining sector as a major contributor to Ethiopia's foreign exchange earnings,from there he established a partnership between the Colorado School of Mines and Addis Ababa Institute of Technology to offer a dual Masters program in Mining and Petroleum Engineering. On 16 July 2024,Takele was appointed as chief executive officer of the Ethio-Djibouti Railways by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. [16] [17]

The Ethio-Djibouti Railway is a metre gauge railway in the Horn of Africa that once connected Addis Ababa to the port city of Djibouti. The operating company was also known as the Ethio-Djibouti Railways. The railway was built in 1894–1917 to connect the Ethiopian capital city to French Somaliland. During early operations,it provided landlocked Ethiopia with its only access to the sea. After World War II,the railway progressively fell into a state of disrepair due to competition from road transport.

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is a standard gauge international railway that serves as the backbone of the new Ethiopian National Railway Network. The railway was inaugurated by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on January 1,2018. It provides landlocked Ethiopia with access to the sea,linking Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa with Djibouti and its Port of Doraleh. More than 95% of Ethiopia's trade passes through Djibouti,accounting for 70% of the activity at the Port of Djibouti.

In 2020,Takele Uma Banti succeeded as the Minister of Mines and Petroleum until 14 January 2023. Currently,Habtamu Tegene has been the current minister since 20 January 2023. It was previously known as the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The Adwa 00KM Museum is a public historical museum located in Piasa,Arada district,Addis Ababa,Ethiopia. Inaugurated on 11 February 2024,the museum is dedicated to the Battle of Adwa,the battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War where Italian forces defeated by the Ethiopian Army in 1896. Part of Adwa Zero KM Project,the museum lies on 1.5 hectares of land.

On 26 April 2019,he was appointed as advisor to the Prime Minister on Infrastructure &Urban Development. The Dire Dawa Train Station was historic railway station connecting Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa city in Ethiopia built by the French in 1897 as complement of Ethio-Djibouti Railways.
