Tarique Ahmed Siddique is a retired major general of the Bangladesh Army and the former defence and security adviser to the ex Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [1] [2]
Tarique Ahmed Siddique is the younger brother of Shafique Ahmed Siddique,the husband of Sheikh Rehana,the only surviving sister of Bangladeshi former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. [3]
Siddique was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers on 11 January,1975. He served as platoon leader and Company 2 i/c in Savar Engineering Brigade until 1976,when he was promoted to lieutenant. Promoted to Captain in 1978,he served as GSO-3 (Engrs) of Rangpur Cantonment and company commander in Bandarban. He was promoted to major in 1983,he served as an adjutant of an Engineers Battalion in Alikadam till 1985 and as commander of a Bangladesh Rifles Battalion in Satkhira till 1988. Thereafter he served as Brigade Major of 21st Infantry Brigade in Jessore until 1989. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1989 when he served in the DGFI,from where he was removed in 1991. From 1991 to 1994,he served as staff officer in Bangladesh Ansar Headquarters and from 1994 to 1996,as deputy chief instructor in Engineer Centre and School of Military Engineering (ECSME). He was promoted to colonel in 1996 and served for a time as commanding officer of 9 Engrs Battalion in Savar,and thereafter in the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence until 1998,after which he was assigned to the Special Security Force.
He was promoted to brigadier in 1999. From 2000 to 2001,he served as deputy commander of 9th Infantry Division (Bangladesh) [4] From 17 November 2001 to 17 March 2002,he served as the engineer in chief of the Bangladesh Army. [5] He was promoted to major general in 2003 and served as senior instructor (army) in Defense Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) Mirpur.
After retirement from active service,he was appointed as chief of personal security to Sheikh Hasina when she was the opposition leader. He was present during 2004 Dhaka grenade attack which tried to assassinate Sheikh Hasina. [6] [7] He was appointed to the post of adviser to the prime minister in 2009. [8] He advises the Prime Minister on anti-terrorism activities. [9] He inaugurated the Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange in 2016. [10] He is a graduate of Defence Services Command &Staff College,Bangladesh. He has done RCDS course from Royal College of Defence Studies London,United Kingdom.

During his role as the security advisor of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,Siddique has been accused of extrajudicial killings,enforced disappearances and financial scandals. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20]
Allegations of abductions and enforced disappearances
Siddique was accused of abducting Tauhidul Islam Chowdhury,chief of the personal security team of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia,in 2018 and a case has been filed against him for abduction and illegal detention in 2024. [21] [12] [14] [15] [16] He was also held accountable for his alleged connections to the BDR carnage,and a lawsuit is underway regarding this on behalf of a victim's family. [22] [23] [24] [25] Moreover due to his controversial role during the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement,a murder case has been filed against him with the Ashulia Police Station of Dhaka. [26]
In 2011,Mr Siddique defended the Rapid Action Battalion's widely controversial action of shooting a college student named Limon Hossain. [27] Limon,who was shot by RAB and subsequently lost his left leg,filed a complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal in 2024 accusing Tarique Siddique along with eight other individuals who are mostly former RAB personnel. In 2012,a report by Salah Choudhury published in openDemocracy raised allegations that Colonel Shahid Uddin Khan was engaged in influence peddling and corrupt practices with the backing of Siddique. According to the report,Khan has a number of business in which Siddique's wife and daughter are shareholders. [31] According to an Al Jazeera Investigative Unit report,published on 29 March 2019,Siddique used intelligence agencies to abduct employees of a business associate. The business associate,Colonel Shahid Uddin Khan,is currently in exile in the United Kingdom. The family members of men have no heard from them since their abduction. As defence advisor,he had control over the intelligence agencies and military of Bangladesh. [32]
It is alleged that Tarique Ahmed Siddique was one of the masterminds of the formation of the 'Aynaghar',an arbitrary detention and torture cell of the Awami League government. [33]
Corruption and financial misconduct
Tarique Siddique has been accused of embezzling billions of Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) through commission-based deals from various government projects. [34] [11] [35]
In April 2012,Tarique Ahmed Siddique was implicated in a corruption scandal involving the Bangladesh Railway. A vehicle carrying Tk 70 lakh in bribe money was intercepted at the Pilkhana BGB headquarters. Siddique,acting on behalf of ex prime minister Sheikh Hasina,ordered the release of the detained individuals and the return of the money,while ensuring the incident was kept from the public. [36]
Freezing of assets
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina regime,the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) ordered a freeze on the bank accounts of Tarique Siddique,his family members,and their associated entities under the Money Laundering Act in 2024. [37] [38] The freeze came amid investigations into his alleged role in laundering public funds and illegal financial transactions. [39] The directive extended to the suspension of personal and corporate accounts,as well as locker access,underscoring the severity of the accusations. [40] [41] [42]
Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years,making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus,she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.
Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed,also known as Sajeeb Wazed Joy,is a Bangladeshi businessman and politician. He is a member of the Bangladesh Awami League and served as an advisor to his mother,former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,on information and communication technology affairs.
The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina,the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack.
Bangladesh Rifles revolt,also referred to as the Pilkhana tragedy or the Pilkhana Massacre,was a mutiny staged on 25 and 26 February 2009 in Dhaka by a section of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR),a paramilitary force mainly tasked with guarding the borders of Bangladesh. The rebelling BDR soldiers took over the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana,killing BDR director-general Shakil Ahmed along with 56 other army officers and 17 civilians. They also fired on civilians,held many of their officers and their families hostage,vandalised property and looted valuables. By the second day,unrest had spread to 12 other towns and cities. The mutiny ended as the mutineers surrendered their arms and released the hostages after a series of staged discussions and negotiations with the government.
Tofail Ahmed is a Bangladeshi politician. He is a 7-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Bhola-1,Bhola-2 and Bakerganj-1 constituencies during 1973–2024. Previously he served as the Minister of Commerce and Minister of Industries of the Government of Bangladesh.
Arifa Pervin Zaman,known by her stage name Moushumi,is a Bangladeshi film actress and director. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress three times for her roles in Meghla Akash (2001),Devdas (2013) and Taarkata (2014). The Fakhruddin Ahmed ministry was the fourth caretaker ministry in the history of Bangladesh which was formed on 11 January 2007 under the leadership of Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed. The caretaker ministry was formed on the background of the 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis following a military coup,notoriously nicknamed "1/11" inspired by 9/11,led by General Moeen U Ahmed and the resignation of President Iajuddin Ahmed as the Chief Adviser. Ahmed appointed an team of thirteen advisers to form the government. During his tenure,many high-profile figures,most importantly the two dominant political party leaders Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina,were arrested as part of the emergency government's anticorruption crusade and its attempt to break the women's stranglehold on the country's politics. The attempt was controversially known as the "minus two" formula due to the aim being the exclusion of the two from further political participation.
Sheikh Rehana Siddiq is a Bangladesh Awami League politician. She is the younger sister of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the daughter of the first President of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She is also the mother of Tulip Siddiq,a British Labour Party politician and former Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
Bangabandhu Memorial Museum,also known as Bangabandhu Bhaban or Dhanmondi 32,located in Dhanmondi,Dhaka,Bangladesh,was the personal residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,who was also called Bangabandhu,the founding leader and president of Bangladesh. Mujib was assassinated with most members of his family in this residence. The museum was listed as a national heritage site in 2009 by RAJUK and was largely damaged in a mob violence in 2024.
Pran Gopal Datta is a Bangladeshi physician,university administrator and politician. In September 2021,he won a seat in the Jatiya Sangsad representing the Comilla-7 constituency in an unopposed by-election. The seat had become vacant after Ali Ashraf died in office in July 2021.
Shafique Ahmed Siddique is a Bangladeshi Academic and Professor of University of Dhaka. He was the Chairperson of the Governing Body of Dhaka Commerce College. He was also the Chairperson of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology and Vice-Chairperson of Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh.
Mohammed Shahabuddin natively known as Chuppu,is a Bangladeshi jurist,civil servant and politician who has served as the 16th and current president of Bangladesh since 2023. He was elected unopposed in the 2023 presidential election as the nominee of the ruling Awami League. Prior to his presidency,Shahabuddin served as a district and sessions judge and a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016.

Colonel Shahid Uddin Khan is a retired Bangladesh Army officer who was forced into exile following a business dispute with Tarique Ahmed Siddique,Defence and Security adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh,Sheikh Hasina. He is living in the United Kingdom. He was sentenced to nine years imprisonment in a tax evasion case.
An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus was formed on 8 August 2024 in Bangladesh,following the resignation and fleeing of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024 amid nationwide student and public protests against the government. Following the dissolution of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad on 6 August 2024,the interim cabinet will remain in office until a new Prime Minister is appointed after a snap general election. The government,like the previous non-caretaker government interim administrations,is extra-constitutional. However,the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh affirmed the legality of the stopgap government on 9 August 2024,stating that the doctrine of necessity created an urgent need to manage state affairs and address the constitutional vacuum,similar to previous cases. The main pledge of his ministry is organize a constituent assembly to draft and adopt a new,democratic and inclusive constitution,ensuring the inviolability of human dignity.
Pinaki Bhattacharya is a Bangladeshi activist and physician known for his vehement criticism of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party-led government. He has lived in exile in France after the Bangladesh road-safety protests in 2018. Pinaki's activism played a crucial role in the ousting of Sheikh Hasina from power,following which he campaigned for the Five-Point Demand issued by the Anti-discrimination Students Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee.
Syed Borhan Kabir is a Bangladeshi journalist and editor of Bangla Insider. He hosted popular show Poriprekkhit on Bangladesh Television,the national channel of Bangladesh. He is the executive director of Pariprekshit,a non-profit.
M. A. N. Siddique is an former officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service who served as the first Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited. He was also the Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division.
Sheikh Hasina,the former prime minister of Bangladesh,has faced many criticism and controversies over years.
