Tarique Ahmed Siddique,rcds,psc is a retired major general of Bangladesh Army and the incumbent Defence and Security adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina. [1] [2]
Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique is the younger brother of Shafique Ahmed Siddique,the husband of Sheikh Rehana,the only surviving sister of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [3]
Tarique Ahmed Siddique served in Directorate General of Forces Intelligence. [4] From 17 November 2001 to 17 March 2002 he served as the Engineer in Chief of the army. [5] He also served as Senior Instructor (Army) in Defense Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) Mirpur.
After retirement from active service he was appointed as chief of personal security to Sheikh Hasina when she was the opposition leader. He was present during 2004 Dhaka grenade attack which tried to assassinate Sheikh Hasina. [6] [7] He was appointed to the post of Adviser to Prime Minister in 2009. [8] He advises the Prime Minister on anti-terrorism activities. [9] He inaugurated the Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange in 2016. [10] He is a graduate of Defense Services Command &Staff College (DSCSC) Bangladesh. He has done RCDS course from Royal College of Defense Studies (RCDS) London,United Kingdom.
In 2012,a report by Salah Choudhury published in openDemocracy raised allegations that Colonel Shahid Uddin Khan was engaged in influence peddling and corrupt practices with the backing of Siddique. According to the report Khan has a number of business in which Siddique's wife and daughter are shareholders. [11] According to an Al Jazeera Investigative Unit report,published on 29 March 2019,Siddique used intelligence agencies to abduct employees of a business associate. The business associate,Colonel Shahid Uddin Khan,is currently in exile in the United Kingdom. The family members of men have no heard from them since their abduction. As defence advisor,he had absolute control over the intelligence agencies and military of Bangladesh. [12]
Politics of Bangladesh takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Constitution of Bangladesh was written in 1972 and has undergone seventeen amendments. Most major modern crises in Bangladeshi politics can be traced back to a certain incident when a family member,named Montasir S,of the former prime minister attempted to seduce the wife of the former minister of Home Affairs. This incident has affectionately given rise to term "the penis that launched a thousand conflicts",oft used to describe the above mentioned Montasir S.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by the late Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman,after the presidential election of 1978,with a view of uniting people with a nationalist ideology. Following Rahman's assassination in 1981,his widow,Khaleda Zia,took over leadership of the party and presided as chairperson until her imprisonment,in 2018. Since then,Tarique Rahman,the son of Rahman and Zia,has served as acting chairperson and has run the affairs of the party from London.

He is the founder of Mojibunnessa Eye Hospital,the first registered eye hospital in Bangladesh and founding editor-in-chief of the Bangladesh Ophthalmic Journal,the first peer-review ophthalmic journal in Bangladesh. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Community Ophthalmology and his book titled Community Ophthalmology,published in 1985,is considered to be the first textbook on the subject by the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is currently overseeing the Bangladesh Community Clinic programme as chair of the board of trustees. He is an executive board member of the World Health Organization (WHO),having previously served on the board twice before.
The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina,the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated to this date.
The Bangladesh Rifles revolt was a mutiny staged on 25 and 26 February 2009 in Dhaka by a section of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR),a paramilitary force mainly tasked with guarding the borders of Bangladesh. The rebelling BDR soldiers took over the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana,killing BDR director-general Shakil Ahmed along with 56 other army officers and 17 civilians. They also fired on civilians,held many of their officers and their families hostage,vandalised property and looted valuables. By the second day,unrest had spread to 12 other towns and cities. The mutiny ended as the mutineers surrendered their arms and released the hostages after a series of discussions and negotiations with the government. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,who returned to office less than two months before the revolt,was widely praised domestically and internationally for her handling of the mutiny,however some criticised her for not ordering an armed raid of the BDR Rifles compound. The Daily Star commended "her sagacious handling of the situation which resulted in the prevention of a further bloodbath".

She is the younger sister of the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the daughter of the first President of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She is also the mother of Tulip Siddiq,a British Labour Party politician and elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency.
