The majority of Indonesia's railways are on Java, used for both passenger and freight transport. There are three noncontinuous railway networks in Sumatra while two new networks are being developed in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Indonesia has finalized its plan for a national railway network recently. According to the plan, 3,200 km of train tracks that will criss-cross the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, it has been touted as the most extensive railway project in Indonesia since its independence from the Dutch in 1945. Indonesia targets to extend the national railway network to 10,524 kilometres by 2030. As of September 2022, the network spans 7,032km.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (English: Indonesian Railways Company, abbreviated as PT KAI or simply KAI) is the sole operator of public railways in Indonesia. It is completely state-owned and pays track access charges to the government. The headquarters of KAI are located in Bandung, West Java.
KRL Commuterline, or commonly known as Commuterline, is a commuter rail system for Greater Jakarta in Indonesia. It was previously known as KRL Jabodetabek. It is operated by PT KAI Commuter Indonesia, a subsidiary of the Indonesian national railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). The rail system uses rolling stock of rapid transit standard and operates at high frequency with a minimum headway. In 2019, the average number of KRL users per day reaches average of 1.04 million, with the record of the highest number of users served in a day being 1,154,080.

Argo Bromo Anggrek is the name of executive and luxury train jointly operated by Kereta Api Indonesia between Surabaya and Jakarta in Indonesia. The train covers 725 kilometres (450 mi) in 8.5 hours along Java's north coast, stopping at Bojonegoro, Semarang Tawang, Pekalongan, and Cirebon. It is one of the best known trains in Indonesia.
The EMD GT38AC diesel-electric locomotives are made by Electro-Motive Diesel for export in Indonesia. There are 91 locomotives owned by the state-owned Indonesian Railway Company, all of them are for in Sumatra and replace the aging EMD G26. It's also one of two most advanced-technology locomotive in Indonesia.

KA Commuter line Cikarang Loop Line, formerly Bekasi Line and Cikarang line, is a commuter rail line in Indonesia, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The line connects Kampung Bandan station in North Jakarta and Cikarang station in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java. On maps and diagrams, the line is shown using the color "blue". Jakarta Kota–Cikarang is the extension of previously Jakarta Kota–Bekasi line which connects to Cikarang since 8 October 2017.
The Bogor Line, also known as KRL Commuter Line Jakarta Kota–Bogor/Nambo is a commuter rail line in Indonesia, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI). The line connects Jakarta Kota station in West Jakarta and Bogor station in Bogor, West Java. On maps and diagrams, the line is shown using the color "red". The line is the busiest in the KA Commuter system.

Argo Jati is a train service operated by Indonesian Railway Company between Jakarta and Cirebon in Java, Indonesia. This train was relaunched on November 3, 2010, as a replacement train series of Argo Jati, which was launched in 2007.

The 2017 Java earthquake occurred on 15 December 2017 when a moment magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java, specifically the city of Tasikmalaya on 23:47:58 West Indonesian Time in West Java, Indonesia. The earthquake struck at a depth of 91 km and was categorized as a strong but deep earthquake. It was initially registered as a 7.3 magnitude earthquake by Indonesian agencies. Widespread damages have been reported across Tasikmalaya, the nearest major city to the epicentre. A tsunami warning was immediately issued by the authorities but was subsequently cancelled. Four people have been confirmed dead.
Argo Parahyangan, also commonly known as GOPAR is an executive class train operated by Indonesian Railway Company between Gambir railway station, Jakarta and Bandung or Kiaracondong in Java, Indonesia. The train covers 166 kilometres (103 mi) in 3 hours. From Jakarta to Bandung the train stops at Bekasi, Cimahi, and Purwakarta, where as from Bandung to Jakarta it stops only at Jatinegara. KAI operates 34 trips daily in the route.
Prambanan Express, commonly abbreviated as Pramex and Prameks is a commuter rail service that operates between Yogyakarta, Special Region of Yogyakarta and Kutoarjo, Purworejo Regency, Central Java in Indonesia. The service, which first operated in 1994, covers a distance of about 64 kilometers and operates using diesel multiple unit trains. It was previously serving Yogyakarta–Solo for 26 years before it was electrified in 2021.
Argo Wilis is an executive class train operated by PT Kereta Api Indonesia between Surabaya and Bandung in Java, Indonesia. The train covers 696 kilometres (432 mi) in 11 hours with stoppage at Cipeundeuy, Tasikmalaya, Banjar, Kroya, Kutoarjo, Yogyakarta, Solo Balapan, Madiun, Kertosono, Jombang, and Mojokerto. This train runs in the morning from Bandung to Surabaya Gubeng or vice versa, and arrives at the destination at night. In the journey Bandung to Surabaya, passengers can enjoy the beautiful panorama of the eastern part of Parahyangan mountainous region.
Cipeundeuy Station (CPD) is a class II railway station located in Cikarag, Malangbong, Garut Regency. The station, which is located at an altitude of +772 meters, is included in the Bandung Operational Area II. This station has three railway tracks.
Cianjur Station (CJ) is a class II railway station located in Sayang, Cianjur, Cianjur Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The station, which is located at an altitude of 439 m, is included in the Operation Area II Bandung. This station is the station with the highest passenger density on the Cianjur–Padalarang route.
Jombang Station (JG) is a large class type C railway station located in Jombatan, Jombang, Jombang Regency, the station is included in the Operation Area VII Madiun at an altitude of +43 m. The location of this station is right across the Alun-alun Jombang. All trains passing the Kertosono-Surabaya Gubeng must stop at this station.
The 2022 Serang train crash occurred on July 26, 2022 when a Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Lokal Merak train crashed into an odong-odong at a level crossing in Serang, Banten, Indonesia on Tuesday morning, causing at least one odong-odong to be overturned. At least nine people were killed and another 24 were wounded in the crash.
