The Tata LPTA is a military truck family developed and produced by Indian manufacturer Tata Advanced Systems. The trucks are available in 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12 configurations. With extreme off-road capabilities, they are proposed as a replacement for the Czech-designed Tatra trucks currently used by Indian Armed Forces.
The Indian Army is one of the biggest users of Tatra trucks in the world, with over 10,000 trucks of various types in service. Because of their high-operational flexibility and functional adaptability they formed the backbone of the Army's tactical and mobilisation capability. These trucks were license-produced in India by BEML, a public sector company. Following the Tatra bribery scam, a ban was imposed on Tatra and the supply of these trucks stopped. Thus, the development of multi-axle tactical trucks was started by Tata to meet the Army's requirements. [8]
The vehicles have a cab over engine modular design. The cab can hold two crew and four passengers. There are two roof hatches for firing, observation and emergency exit. The trucks are equipped with a hydraulic crane for loading/unloading equipment. They come with a central tire inflation system which inflates/deflates tyres according to terrain requirements. For the driver's comfort, the cab is equipped with heat and air conditioning. There is a self recovery winch in the front as well. [9]
The 6×6 and 8×8 variants are powered by a Cummins ISLe engine developing 375 horsepower, while the 12×12 variant comes with a Cummins ISXe engine with a maximum of 525 horsepower. The 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 variants are mated to a 10 speed (9F+1R) manual transmission, while the 12×12 variant comes with an automatic transmission. [6]
In July 2015, Tata won a contract for supplying 1,239 trucks of the 6×6 variant to the Indian Army. In March 2016, an additional order for 619 more trucks was placed. The total order was worth 1300 crores, making it the biggest order to a local private supplier. [10]
The 8×8 variant has been proposed to be the platform for the upgraded BM-21 Grad MBRL. [11] The Tata LPTA 5252 12×12 variant has been selected as a transporter erector launcher (TEL) for the Nirbhay/LR-LACM missile, [12] BrahMos and Prahaar missile. [11] [13]
Around 15,000 trucks of the 4×4 variant are also in service with the Indian Army, all manufactured by the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur. [14]
In January 2023, several reports confirmed that TATA had exported 92 units of the LPTA 2445 variant to the Royal Moroccan Army via Port Pipavav. The LPTA 2445 is a six-wheel drive military grade truck used for logisitics and munition transport purposes. The Moroccan variant has a 300 HP engine and a transport capacity of 10 tons. [15] [16] [17] [18] It can be also used for missile platform, mounted gun system, communication and radar system, command post, field artillery tractor with crew cabin, crash fire tender, fuel bowser, and HMV[ clarification needed ] with material handling crane purposes. [19]

The Tatra 815 is a truck family, produced by Czech company Tatra. It uses the traditional Tatra concept of rigid backbone tube and swinging half-axles giving independent suspension. The vehicles are available in 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, 10x8, 10x10, 12x8 and 12x12 variants. There are both air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines available with power ranging from 230–440 kilowatts (310–590 hp). As a successor to Tatra 813 it was originally designed for extreme off-road conditions, while nowadays there are also variants designated for mixed use. The gross weight is up to 35,500 kg (78,264 lb).
The Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé or VAB is a French armoured personnel carrier and support vehicle designed and manufactured by Renault Trucks Defense. It entered French service in 1979 and around 5,000 were produced for the French Army as well as for export. It has seen combat in various conflicts in Africa, Asia as well as Europe and has also been exported to more than 15 countries.
Pinaka is a multiple rocket launcher produced in India and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army. It is also called India's Grad missile system as it's characteristics are derived from BM-21 Grad. The system has a maximum range of 45 km (28 mi) for Mark-I Enhanced and 90 km (56 mi) for Mark-II ER version, and can fire a salvo of 12 HE rockets per launcher in 44 seconds. The system is mounted on a Tatra truck for mobility. Pinaka saw service during the Kargil War, where it was successful in neutralising Pakistani positions on the mountain tops. It has since been inducted into the Indian Army in large numbers.
The BM-21 "Grad" is a self-propelled 122 mm multiple rocket launcher designed in the Soviet Union. The system and the M-21OF rocket were first developed in the early 1960s, and saw their first combat use in March 1969 during the Sino-Soviet border conflict. BM stands for boyevaya mashina, and the nickname grad means "hail". The complete system with the BM-21 launch vehicle and the M-21OF rocket is designated as the M-21 field-rocket system and is more commonly known as a Grad multiple rocket launcher system.
The RM-70 multiple rocket launcher is a Czechoslovak Army version and heavier variant of the BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher, providing enhanced performance over its parent area-saturation rocket artillery system that was introduced in 1971.
Nirbhay is a long range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile designed and developed in India by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) which is under Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The missile can be launched from multiple platforms and is capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads. It is currently deployed in limited numbers in Line of Actual Control (LAC) during standoff with China.
The Mercedes-Benz Zetros is an off-road truck for extreme operations. It was first presented at the 2008 Eurosatory defence industry trade show in Paris. The Zetros is manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth, Germany. The truck is designed to be compatible with the C-130 Hercules transport and also fits into a standard German railway carriage. In 2019 Mercedes-Benz presented a facelift of the Zetros with a more powerful engine and a bigger number of variants.

The Tatra 815-7 is a heavy army logistics vehicle made by the Czech company Tatra produced since 2007. T817 is primarily intended for military operators and for specialist roles in civilian sector. The truck is made primarily with axle variations of 4×4, 6×6, 8×8 and 10×10. Other chassis variants up to 16x16 are also available.
The Ashok Leyland FAT is a family of all-terrain military truck designed, developed and produced by Indian automobile manufacturer Ashok Leyland. The design is broadly based on Ashok Leyland Super Stallion truck. It is primarily used for towing a wide range of artillery guns. It will replace the aging fleet of KrAZ-255 and Scania SBAT111S used by the Indian Army.
Agni-Prime or Agni-P is a two-stage, surface to surface, canister-launched, road mobile and solid-fueled medium-range ballistic missile being developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as the sixth missile in the Agni series. It is intended to be deployed in the operational service of the Strategic Forces Command, and to feature significant upgrades to the composite motor casing, a maneuverable reentry vehicle (MaRV) along with improved propellants, navigation and guidance systems.
