G-funk, short for gangsta funk, is a sub-genre of gangsta rap that emerged from the West Coast scene in the early 1990s. The genre was heavily influenced by the synthesizer-heavy 1970s funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic, often using samples or recreating the original tracks. It was represented by commercially successful albums such as Dr. Dre's The Chronic (1992) and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle (1993).

Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., better known by his stage name Young Dolph, was an American rapper, songwriter and entrepreneur. In 2016, he released his debut studio album, King of Memphis, which peaked at number 49 on the Billboard 200 chart. Young Dolph's fifth album, Rich Slave, was released in 2020 and became his highest-charting project, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200. Young Dolph created Paper Route Empire, an independent music label and Memphis rap group. On November 17, 2021, he was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee.
LaPreston Porter, better known by his stage name Snootie Wild, was an American rapper and singer. He was best known for his first single, "Yayo", which success helped launch his career. The song charted in the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In October 2013, it was announced that a fellow Memphis-based rapper, Yo Gotti, had signed Wild to his Collective Music Group (CMG) imprint.
