Tenniel Chu (born 1976), from Hong Kong, is the Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group, owner and operator of the Mission Hills golf and leisure resorts in Shenzhen and on the island of Hainan, China.

Education

Tenniel graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Toronto, Canada, then pursued his passion for golf by studying Professional Golf Management at the city’s Humber College. On completing his studies, he worked at US PGA Tour headquarters in Florida before joining the family business in 2001.[ citation needed ]

Career

Since his appointment as Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group, Tenniel has played a role in international tournament bids as well as attracting golf’s biggest stars to Mission Hills, beginning with Tiger Woods’ first visit to China in 2001 [1] – and again in 2011 – followed by the Dynasty Cup in 2003 and the Goodwill Trophy in 2005.

Since then, Mission Hills has staged four editions of the World Cup of Golf, three editions of the World Ladies Championship, the 2012 WGC-HSBC Champions, the 2013 “Match at Mission Hills” between Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and three editions of the World Celebrity Pro-Am, a ground-breaking event for Asia featuring elite male and female golfers together with stars from entertainment and sports. Tenniel has overseen Mission Hills’ emphasis on junior golf development which created the Mission Hills Golf Series Junior tour in January 2010 - an event that has won praise from many golfing experts including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. [3] In 2014, the club staged 43 junior tournaments, including signature annual events hosted by Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Annika Sörenstam.

Tenniel is also Deputy Commissioner of OneAsia, [4] Vice Chairman of the China Golf Association, President of the Guangdong Golf Association and President of the Shenzhen Golf Association.

In addition, he is founding Chairman of the China Chapter of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, [5] and the first Chinese national to be admitted as a member of the R&A.

Tenniel’s golf achievements were given formal recognition in October 2014 when – for the second year in a row – he and his brother, Dr Ken Chu (businessman), the Mission Hills Chairman and CEO, were named the “Most Powerful People in Asian Golf” by Golf Inc. [6] The brothers were also named in the Top 10 in the magazine’s global ranking. [7]

Mission Hills

Mission Hills Shenzhen-Dongguan, which contains 12 golf courses, is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest golf facility, [8] and Mission Hills Haikou, which features 10 courses, is also the world’s largest spa resort. [9] Mission Hills Group currently encompasses businesses in golf management, real estate, commercial retail development, residential development, wellness, education and theme parks.

The company is expanding facilities to include hotel brands, [10] major tourist attractions, [11] retail developments, [12] entertainment districts, [13] office space and residential accommodation. It is also in the process of developing new resorts at other locations across China.

Philanthropy

Tenniel Chu is an active member of the Hong Kong and Mainland China Aid Organization and social services such as the United Nations Charity Golf event, [14] the Golfers “5.12 Fund Raising Golf Campaign” - recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest single-day golf tournament of the world ever. [15]

Due to his contribution to the sports of China, Tenniel has been a torch-bearer for both Beijing 2008 Olympics and Shenzhen 2011 Universiade. He is also a member of the Shenzhen Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Haikou, also spelled as Hoikow is the capital and most populous city of the Chinese province of Hainan. Haikou city is situated on the northern coast of Hainan, by the mouth of the Nandu River. The northern part of the city is the district of Haidian Island, which is separated from the main part of Haikou by the Haidian River, a branch of the Nandu. Administratively, Haikou is a prefecture-level city, comprising four districts, and covering 2,280 square kilometres (880 sq mi). There are 2,046,189 inhabitants in the built-up area all living within the 4 urban districts of the city.

The World Cup of Golf is a men's golf tournament contested by teams of two representing their country. Only one team is allowed from each country. The equivalent event for women was the Women's World Cup of Golf, played from 2005 to 2008.

Rory McIlroy is a professional golfer from Northern Ireland who is a member of both the European and PGA Tours. He is a former world number one in the Official World Golf Ranking, having spent over 100 weeks in that position during his career. He is a four-time major champion, winning the 2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, and 2014 PGA Championship. Along with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, he is one of three players to win four majors by the age of 25.

Lingshui Li Autonomous County Autonomous County in Hainan, Peoples Republic of China

Língshuǐ Li Autonomous County is an autonomous county in Hainan, China. It is one of the six autonomous counties of Hainan with a postal code of 572400, and in 1999 a population of 318,691, largely made up of the Li people. Sheshan Golf Club is the first premier private golf club in Shanghai, China. Founded in 2004, the 18 hole golf course plays to a par of 72 and is designed by Nelson and Haworth Design, and spans over 7,266 yards. Every year, the club plays host to the WGC-HSBC Champions, and is currently the only club to host the Championship. Sheshan Golf Club was awarded the Best Golf Course in China by Golf Digest in 2013 and currently tops of the list of Top Clubs in China by Golf Magazine.

Golf in China

Golf in China is a growing industry, with numerous golf courses being established, especially in the province of Hainan. There are around 358,000 core players among Chinese population, with a growth rate of 7.5%. That figure was projected to grow to about 20 million by 2020. For the general public, golf is considered to be prohibitively expensive. However, it is seen as the top recreational sport for businesspeople and officials.

Mission Hills Haikou Golf complex in Hainan, China

Mission Hills Haikou is a golf complex in Haikou, Hainan, China. Located around 10 km south of the center of Haikou, it comprises 10 golf courses, and at the north end, hotels including a Ritz Carlton and Renaissance, condominiums, a water park, and a Centreville (downtown) which includes numerous restaurants and shops. The site is 80 km2 making it the second largest golf complex in the world. The largest is the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen.

The 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup was a golf tournament that took place 24–27 November on the Blackstone course at Mission Hills Haikou in Hainan, China. It was the 56th World Cup, and the first since 2009, when the tournament switched to being staged biennially. 28 countries competed as two player teams. The purse was increased from $5.5 million in 2009 to $7.5 million in 2011. The event was won by the United States, represented by Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland with a score of 264, 24 under par.

Brian Curley

Brian Curley is a golf course architect. He was raised in Pebble Beach, California where he played, caddied and worked at the area’s iconic courses. He currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona. Curley is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and currently serves on its Board of Governors.

World Ladies Championship

The World Ladies Championship was a golf tournament on the Ladies European Tour. It was played at the Mission Hills Haikou, China from 2012 to 2015. It moved to the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen in 2016 and returned to Haikou in 2017. It was played as both an individual and team tournament. Only the individual event was an official money/official win event.

Movie Town Haikou

Movie Town Haikou is an artificial town, movie studios, guest apartments, and administration buildings, approximately 8 km south of Haikou, Hainan, China. The town, located beside Mission Hills Haikou golf resort, was created as a movie and television filming location and tourist attraction. Some of the buildings still under construction are the town buildings and the movie studios with accompanying filming facilities.
