Terapon Dang Adhahn (born c.1965) is a Thai convicted sex offender and a former Bhikkhu [1] who, in May 2008, was sentenced to life in prison for raping and murdering 12-year-old Zina Linnik in Tacoma, Washington. [2] [3] [4]

Charges were filed against him involving the rape and abduction of 11-year-old Sabrina Rasmussen near Fort Lewis, Washington in 2000 and the repeated sexual assaults of a teenage acquaintance that span from 2000 to 2004. [5] [6] [7] [8]

Early life and education

Adhahn was born in Bangkok, Thailand to Pennsiri Bower and a Thai father. [1] As a child, Adhahn was allegedly raped repeatedly by an older sibling. [1] It was also reported that his father physically abused him until his parents divorced around the time Adhahn was 3 or 4. [9] After Adhahn's father left, his mother married an American serviceman named John Bower and the family moved to San Diego in 1977.

Career

Following Adhahn's high school graduation, Adhahn took part in traditional Buddhist ceremonies and became a Buddhist monk. [1]

He later became a legal United States resident and enlisted in the United States Army. Adhahn married Barbara Harris Adhahn in 1986 and had two children. In his two tours of duty, Adhahn would serve at Fort Dix in New Jersey, Germany and Fort Lewis. His wife went with him. [10] In 1989, he moved to Western Washington and settled in Tacoma. Investigators believe he may have visited the area prior to his move. [9] Adhahn separated from his wife in September 1990 and filed for divorce in May 1998. Around this time Adhahn was living with another woman who gave birth to a son. For a time, he lived with his aunt in Fort Worth, Texas. [10] [11]

Criminal history

Rape and incest conviction

In 1990, Adhahn was convicted of rape and incest against his half sister when she was 16. [12] Following the conviction, Adhahn served two months in jail and attended court ordered treatment for five years. [13] He was classified as a level one ("low risk") sex offender and required to register as a sex offender. [9] Adhahn did not face deportation due to his status as a legal resident with federal law dictating that it was not a requirement for first-time offenders. In 1992, he was convicted of intimidation with a weapon in Tacoma, but officials at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) were not aware of this second conviction and Adhahn was allowed to stay in the country. Zina Linnik

Zina Linnik was abducted from behind her home in the Hilltop Neighborhood of Tacoma during a 2007 Fourth of July celebration. Her father heard a scream and ran to the back to find one of Zina's flip-flop shoes on the ground and a gray van leaving. He was able to make out a partial on the van's license plate which was traced back to Adhahn. [15] Through his lawyer, Adhahn told police where they could find the Tacoma girl's body, though he reportedly did not confess to her abduction or murder. [13] On July 20, Pierce County prosecutors said they planned to charge Adhahn in Zina's case with aggravated murder, which, at the time, carried a maximum penalty of death in Washington state. [16] However, because Pierce County prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty if Adhahn would cooperate with police and help find Linnik's body, Adhahn faced a maximum penalty of life in prison. [17]

In April 2008, Adhahn pleaded guilty to raping and murdering Linnik. [18]

Amber Hagerman

Following the discovery of Zina Linnik's body, Adhahn's name and profile was submitted to the Arlington police department in connection with the 1996 abduction and slaying of Amber Hagerman. Adhahn's mother and brother lived near the Fort Worth area at the time of Amber's death though no evidence has been found that places him in the area during this time. During this time period that Amber went missing, Adhahn was required to attend mandatory sex offender therapy sessions on a weekly basis in Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma police contacted the Arlington department when similarities appeared between Amber's case and a 2000 Fort Lewis rape and abduction that Adhahn was charged with. [19]

Status

Adhahn made national and international headlines for unfounded rumors, as he was not in Texas when Amber was abducted, that he was the abductor and murderer of AMBER Alert namesake Amber Hagerman. [20] [21] As of March 2021, he is housed in the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington doing time for Linnik's murder. His inmate number is 968071. [22]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Robert Hansen</span> American serial killer (1939–2014)

Robert Christian Hansen, known in the media as the Butcher Baker, was an American serial killer. Between 1971 and 1983, Hansen abducted, raped, and murdered at least seventeen women in and around Anchorage, Alaska; he hunted many of them down in the wilderness with a Ruger Mini-14 and a knife. He was arrested and convicted in 1983, and was sentenced to 461 years without the possibility of parole. He died in 2014 of natural causes due to lingering health conditions at age 75.

Joseph Edward Duncan III was an American convicted serial killer and child molester who was on death row in federal prison in conjunction with the 2005 kidnappings and murders of members of the Groene family of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He was also serving 11 consecutive sentences of life without parole in conjunction with the same crimes as well as the 1997 murder of Anthony Martinez of Beaumont, California. Additionally, Duncan confessed to — but had not been charged with — the 1996 murder of two girls, Sammiejo White and Carmen Cubias, in Seattle, Washington. At the time of the attack on the Groene family, Duncan was on the run from a child molestation charge in Minnesota.

John Albert Gardner III is an American convicted double murderer, rapist, and child molester. He confessed to the February 2009 rape and murder of 14-year-old Amber Dubois from Escondido, California, and the February 2010 rape and murder of 17-year-old Chelsea King from Poway, California, after he entered a plea agreement that spared him from execution. Additionally, Gardner attempted to rape 22-year-old Candice Moncayo of San Diego County, and had been previously incarcerated for the molestation of a 13-year-old girl.

John David Guise Cannan is a British murderer, serial rapist, serial abductor and suspected serial killer. A former car salesman, Cannan was convicted in July 1988 of murder and multiple sexual offences, abductions and attempted abductions. He was given three life sentences for the murder of Shirley Banks in Bristol in October 1987; the attempted kidnapping of Julia Holman on the previous night; the rape of a woman in Reading, Berkshire, in 1986; the rape of his girlfriend in December 1980; and several other abductions, attempted abductions and sexual offences. He became eligible for parole in October 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Disappearance of Melissa Brannen</span> 1989 missing person case

The disappearance of Melissa Brannen occurred on December 3, 1989, at the Woodside Apartments in Lorton, Virginia. The five-year-old daughter of Michael and Tammy Brannen, she was raised by her single mother who lived in the complex. She disappeared while attending a party held at the complex for its residents. Caleb Daniel Hughes, a handyman for the complex, was convicted of abduction with the intent to defile and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Her body has never been found, she has never been proven to be dead, and murder charges have never been filed. The case is considered an unsolved homicide by local police.

Hannah Elizabeth Graham was an 18-year-old second-year British-born American student at the University of Virginia who went missing on September 13, 2014. She was last seen early in the morning that day, at the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia. Five weeks later, her remains were discovered on an abandoned property in nearby Albemarle County. Jesse Matthew pleaded guilty to murdering Graham and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was also found guilty and given three additional life sentences for other, previous crimes.

Adre-Anna Anita Jackson, also spelled Adreanna or Adre'Anna was a missing person of Native American descent from Lakewood, Washington. She disappeared at age 10 while walking to school in December 2005 in "a high-crime area with a large number of registered sex offenders". Her mother had sent her out on a three-block walk not knowing school had been canceled because of snow and didn't report her missing until late in the day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Eddie Mosley</span> American serial killer and rapist (1947–2020)

Eddie Lee Mosley was an American serial killer and rapist who murdered at least eight women in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, between 1973 and 1987. He was arrested in 2001 following the results of a DNA profiling test, after being the prime suspect in several murders for many years. Before his arrest, two other men were wrongly convicted of several murders later attributed to Mosley: Frank Lee Smith, who spent 15 years in prison and died behind bars before he could be exonerated, and Jerry Townsend, who spent 22 years in prison before being released. Mosley's true victim count is unknown, with authorities speculating that he committed at least 16 murders and dozens of rapes.

Robert Carl Hohenberger was an American criminal, kidnapper and serial rapist, as well as the prime suspect in a series of murders committed against teenagers in Morgan City, Louisiana between March and May 1978. The FBI was brought in to investigate the killings, putting Hohenberger on a national wanted list, but he committed suicide before he could he apprehended.

Andrzej Kunowski, known as The Beast of Mława, was a Polish murderer, serial rapist and suspected serial killer. A prolific sex offender in his native country, Kunowski later moved illegally to England, where he murdered 12-year-old Macedonian girl Katerina Koneva in 1997. Sentenced to a whole life order for this crime, he was detained at the HM Prison Frankland until his death in 2009. He remains the prime suspect in the disappearances of three girls between 1992 and 2000, for which he was never charged.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Reginald Perkins</span> Executed American serial killer (1955–2009)

Reginald Perkins was an American serial killer who is believed to have murdered up to six women in Ohio and Texas between 1980 and 2000. Convicted of the December 2000 murder of his stepmother, Perkins was sentenced to death and executed via lethal injection. While in prison, DNA evidence linked him to two other murders in Fort Worth in 1991, and he is suspected of killing a further three women in Ohio in the 1980s whom he was acquainted with.

Robert Elwood Askins was an American murderer, sex offender and suspected serial killer from Washington, D.C. who was convicted for the fatal poisoning of Ruth McDonald in 1938, and was a prime suspect in two other murders committed decades apart. He was also a suspect in the Freeway Phantom murders in the early 1970s, in which at least five girls and one woman were abducted and killed in the area.
