Terra Lightfoot (born August, 1986) is a Canadian musician and singer-songwriter from Hamilton, Ontario [1] who has released four albums with the independent music label Sonic Unyon Recording Company [2] and is distributed by Universal Music Group in Canada and The Orchard outside of Canada. She performs in a folk and roots rock style known for bold vocals and electric guitar riffs.

Early life

Lightfoot was raised in Waterdown, Ontario, a rural community in the northern part of Hamilton, and attended McMaster University. [3]

Early career

In the early 2010s Lightfoot was a member of the Dinner Belles, a group of country-folk performers from Hamilton. [4] She performed as a guitarist and vocalist for the group's 2014 studio album The River and the Willow, having previously appeared on their self-released 2011 debut West Simcoe County.

Through indie music label, Sonic Unyon, Lightfoot released her first solo album, self-titled and released in 2011, [5] was described as "subdued", with compositions characteristic of a modern folk singer-songwriter.

Her second solo album, 2014's Every Time My Mind Runs Wild, saw her collaborate with indie rockers Gus van Go, Werner F, and Liam O'Neil (known for his performances with the group The Stills). The album's producers, van Go and F, were credited with bringing a more catchy, hook-heavy, power pop style. [6]

In 2017, Terra Lightfoot released two new albums. In February she released orchestral collaboration Live in Concert. [7] In late summer, Lightfoot released "Paradise," the lead single from her third studio album, New Mistakes. [8] [9] The record earned praise from critics at No Depression, Pop Matters, Guitar Player, Twangville, and The Boot. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]

New Mistakes earned Lightfoot a nomination for a 2018 JUNO Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. The album's single "Paradise" also earned producer van Go a 2018 JUNO nomination for Recording Engineer of the Year, as well as a long-list nomination for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize. [15] [16]

In August 2020, Lightfoot released a new single, "Paper Thin Walls," from her fourth studio album, Consider the Speed. That album was released on October 16, 2020. [17]

Musical style

Lightfoot has a multi-octave mezzo-soprano singing voice that has been compared to that of Joan Jett [18] and Dusty Springfield. [6] Her electric guitar style has been described as similar to John Fogerty and Van Morrison. [6] The songs for which Lightfoot is best known are described as bluesy-rock power ballads.

March 2018 Lightfoot was featured in Guitar Player Magazine along with her SG 'Veronica'. [19]

Touring

Lightfoot has toured extensively in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, performing at folk music festivals and intimate venues. In 2017 she was honoured by the Canadian Independent Music Association for being a touring musician selling at least 25,000 concert seats in a 12-month period. [20]

While touring her 2017 album New Mistakes, Lightfoot also created, curated, and co-headlined The Longest Road Show, an all-female touring revue. [21]

On tour, Lightfoot has collaborated with a famous Canadian singer forty years her senior, Gordon Lightfoot, though the two are not related. [22] She has also toured with The Posies, [23] Toad the Wet Sprocket, Bruce Cockburn [24] and Blue Rodeo. [25] She supported Willie Nelson on the lone Canadian date of the 2018 Outlaw Music Festival. The Inflation Kills [TIK] were a band from Hamilton, Ontario, featuring founding members of prominent Southern Ontario independent bands Kitchens & Bathrooms and Hoosier Poet. Members of the band were: Phil Williams (vocals/guitar), Matt Fleming (guitar), Nicholas Daleo (drums) and Adrian Murchison (bass). After indie-math-rockers Kitchens & Bathrooms disbanded, Williams went on to start The Inflation Kills in 2004 with the intentions of demonstrating an aesthetic shift from more complex time signatures, toward a rock and roll inspired approach, and reestablishing a long commitment to an independent approach to musical creation. The Inflation Kills has one, self-titled, full-length album released through the [now defunct] TikTokTikTok MUSIC! collective and distributed in Canada through Sonic Unyon.

Irish Mythen is an Irish-born Canadian contemporary folk singer-songwriter. In recent years, Mythen has performed with Rod Stewart, Gordon Lightfoot and Lucinda Williams at major festival stages the world over. Mythen's first two full-length albums were Sweet Necessity in 2008 and Open Here in 2011. She moved to Prince Edward Island in 2007, where she won the Songwriter of the Year Award in 2016 for her song "Gypsy Dancer". Her third album, released in 2014 titled Irish Mythen, won the East Coast Music Association 2015 Roots Album of the Year. Mythen is described as "rambunctious, thoughtful, tender and loud" by ABC Radio National. She was one of several female artists at the 2018 edition of the legendary Cambridge Folk Festival, who were singled out by the Guardian newspaper in their praise of new festival booker Bev Burton's female-heavy line-up for the festival. Australia's premier folk and roots festival Byron Bay Bluesfest call her a 'must see artist' and she is booked to make a third appearance at the festival in 2019.

Reyez has written songs for Calvin Harris, Kehlani, Dua Lipa and Normani, most notably penning the hit "One Kiss", and has collaborated with Eminem on multiple occasions. Her debut album, Before Love Came to Kill Us, was released on March 27, 2020, to widespread critical acclaim, and saw commercial success, entering at number thirteen on the US Billboard 200.

The Beaches are a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 2013 by Jordan Miller, Kylie Miller, Leandra Earl, and Eliza Enman-McDaniel (drums). The band released two EPs titled The Beaches (2013) and Heights (2014) before signing to Island Records. In 2017, they released their debut album Late Show, which led to the band winning the 2018 Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year.

Basement Revolver is an indie rock band from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Formed in 2016 by guitarist and vocalist Chrisy Hurn, bassist Nimal Agalawatte and drummer Brandon Munro, the band has released two EPs and four singles, with their first album, Heavy Eyes, being released in 2019. While the band largely plays in Southern Ontario, they have toured the UK and have played in the Midwest USA and New York. Known for their alternative dream pop style of music, Basement Revolver has enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic, and signed onto British indie record label fear of missing out in 2016.
