The Thakkar Bapa Ashram at Rayagada, is established by the great patriot Thakkar Bapa. The Ashram is run by the Servants of India Society.

History

The Ashram was established in the year 1939 with a hostel for the SC/ST boys and girls. During 1938 to 1942 Amritlal Vithaldas Thakkar, Popularly known as Thakkar Bapa worked on various Committees for the welfare of tribals in Orissa, Bihar etc. During the period the Ashram at Rayagada has been established. Later in 1958, a school was established in the complex.

Ashram activities

The Ashram runs an Educational complex with a primary school from class 1 o class 5 for only SC girls & boys to strengthen education among tribals of the district. [1] It is associated with balbiksah yojana under child development scheme. [2]

Servants of India Society Society formed in 1905 in India

The Servants of India Society was formed in Pune, Maharashtra, on June 12, 1905 by Gopal Krishna Gokhale, who left the Deccan Education Society to form this association. Along with him were a small group of educated Indians, as Natesh Appaji Dravid, Gopal Krishna Deodhar, Surendra Nath Banerjee, and Anant Patwardhan who wanted to promote social and human development and overthrow the British rule in India. The Society organized many campaigns to promote education, sanitation, health care, and fight the social evils of untouchability and discrimination, alcoholism, poverty, oppression of woman and protection of women by domestic abuse. The publication of The Hitavada, the organ of the Society in English from Nagpur commenced in 1911.

Jalaram Bapa Hindu saint and guru (1799–1881)

Jalaram Bapa popularly known as Bapa was a Hindu saint from Gujarat, India. He was born on 4 November 1799, one week after the Hindu festival of Diwali, which is associated with his Iṣṭa-devatā Lord Rama. He is mainly worshipped in Gujarat, but his words and miracles have spread throughout India and many other countries. Thursday is the day that is associated with him in Hinduism. Images of Jalaram Bapa usually portray him as wearing white, with a stick in his left hand and a tulsi mala in his right hand. He is always dressed in simple clothes, to represent that he was a pure person.

Thakkar Bapa

Amritlal Vithaldas Thakkar, popularly known as Thakkar Bapa was an Indian social worker who worked for upliftment of tribal people in Gujarat state in India. He became a member of the Servants of India Society founded by Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1905. In 1922, he founded the Bhil Seva Mandal. Later, he became the general secretary of the Harijan Sevak Sangh founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932. The Bharatiya Adimjati Sevak Sangh was founded on 24 October 1948 on his initiative. When Indian constitution was in process, Kenvi visited remotest and most difficult parts of India and conducted probe into the situation of tribal and Harijan people. He was appointed the chairman of "Excluded and Partially Excluded Areas(Other than Assam), a sub committee of the constituent assembly. Mahatma Gandhi would call him 'Bapa'.
