Chatikona is a small village of Rayagada district in the state of Odisha, India. It is one of the identified Tourist Centres [1] [2] [3] (scenic spot) of Odisha. [4]

Introduction

The village is surrounded by the Niyamgiri hills in its three directions. Every year, on the festival of Maha Shivaratri, people from around Odisha come to visit this place as there is a Shiva (Lord Pataleswar) temple at Chatikona. [5] Beside the temple of Lord Shiva is Chatikona Falls. Numerous waterfalls and streams flow from the hills of Niyamgiri. Bissam Cuttack railway station is, in fact, situated at Chatikona village and hence the village is well connected with railways.

Geography

Chatikona is situated about 48 km from the district headquarters i.e. Rayagada. Chatikona is situated at lat.19° 28′N and lon. 83° 27′E. The nearest villages are Kurli, Khambesi, Kiyapadu and Khajuri.

Demography

Majority of the population at and nearby Chatikona are primitive tribal known as Dongaria [6] kondha. As per census 2011 available in the "Official website of census india" the population of Chatikona is 2183 out of which male population is 1067 and female population is 1116.

Educational institutions

Maa Markama college, Bissamcuttack is the nearest college to Chatikona. Besides, the following educational institutions are situated at Chatikona.

The temple of Lord Shiva (Pataleswar) with a waterfall beside, is a picnic spot and a place of tourist attraction [7] [8] of Rayagada district. Besides, there is a tribal museum of Dongaria Kondha culture organized by D.K.D.A.CHATIKONA. [9] An Oriya film namely "Jianta Bhoota" produced in the year 2011 by Akhaya Kumar parija and directed by Prasanta Nanda which is based on the lives of Dongaria Kondha of this area won National Film Awards under National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Environment/Conservation/Preservation Film category. [10]

Other tourist attractions around the place is the Maa Markama Temple, Laxminarayana Temple at Therubali and the Shiva temple at Paikapada, Rayagada. The weekly Wednesday market at Chatikona is also worth seeing. Here highly ornamented Dongaria Kondha and Desia Kondha villages of Niyamagiri area bring their produce to sell. [11]

Padmapur is a village in the Rayagada district of Odisha, India. It is the most populated village and one of the identified tourist centers of the district. A hillock adjoins the village to its northern side. A 7th century inscription found here, in the Nilakantheswar Temple, indicates that the Jagamanda hill, located close by, once housed the monastery of the famous Buddhist logician-philosopher Dharmakirti.

Maa Markama Temple located at Bissam Cuttack village of Rayagada district is a place of tourist interest. It is the only shrine of Devi Maa Markama and Maa karkama in the Indian state of Odisha. The temple of Maa Karkama is situated next to the temple of Maa Markama. The legend says that the Devi is being worshiped for centuries. However, the temple was constructed in the recent past. A junior college and a university college in Bissam Cuttack are named after Maa Markama. The temple is one of the places of tourist attractions in the Rayagada district. Dussehra and chaitra Paraba are celebrated every year at the temple. The nearest railhead is Chatikona, which is 7 km from Bissam Cuttack.

Nilakantheswar Temple at Padmapur, standing on the Jagamanda hills makes the village well known for the Buddhist temple. The temple is built on only seven rocks. There are also three other shiva temples, i.e. Pudukeswar, Dhabaleswar, and Mallikeswar, on the hillock. This 7th-century-old buddhist temple makes Padmapur a tourist center of Rayagada district. The temple is very often referred as shrine of Manikeswar Siva. Recently a small cemented front hall has been added to the original structure.

Hatipathar is a beautiful spot for picnic and one of the identified Tourist Centres(scenic spot). of odisha located in Rayagada district of the Indian state of Odisha. The scenic spot with two water falls on the river Nagavali, is situated at a distance of 3 km from the town Rayagada. The two huge boulders on the hill top appear like massive elephants. The name Hatipathar( elephant stone) derives from the scene which looks like huge elephants. The 2006 heavy rains changed the course of the river Nagavali and damaged the proposed 10 MW Small H.E. Project for which visitors are not welcome to visit this place currently. However the revival project of Hatipathar waterfall is being taken up to give it a new look. Khambesi is a small village in Bissam Cuttack Tahasil of Rayagada district in the state of Odisha, India dominated by Dongaria Tribe. The village came to limelight when the villagers through Gram Sabha voted against the joint venture of OMC and Vedant's for mining lease. Sri Jalandhar Pusika, a Dongaria of the village Khambesi is the first Graduate of the Tribe.

Kiyapadu is a hamlet in Rayagada Tahasil of Gumma Panchayat in the state of Odisha, India dominated by Dongaria Tribe. The village was in lime light when the local people opposed the establishment of the Alumina Refinery by RSB.

Kumudabali is a small village of Rayagada district in the state of Odisha, India. The Temple of Balunkeswar Shiva on the banks of Vamsadhara River near the village is a scenic spot.
