The Amazing Colossal Band is an album by the Finnish band Laika & the Cosmonauts, released in 1995. [2] [3] It was one of many instrumental rock albums released in 1995, part of a mid-1990s trend that encompassed lounge, surf, and space rock styles. [4]
It was the band's second album to be released in the United States. [5] Laika & the Cosmonauts supported it by playing with, among others, Polara and El Vez on a North American tour. [6] [7]
An instrumental band made up of some of Finland's foremost studio musicians, Laika & the Cosmonauts differed from many of the surf revivalist acts of the mid-1990s by neither sticking to strictly older production techniques, nor by applying a layer of ironic distance to the songs. [8] [9] For Amazing, the band upped the percentage of original material to about 75%, compared to Instruments of Terror's reliance on around 50% covers. [10]

The Washington City Paper thought that "Amazing's standouts include 'Tantrum', which features bongo drums, spy-movie-soundtrack bass runs, and the cheesy organ trills of keyboardist/guitarist Matti Pitsinki; 'The A-Treatment', a composition that mixes sitarlike guitar with funky bass and organ parts; and 'Aztec Two-Step', built around Mikko Lanikinen’s plucky guitar." [13] Trouser Press concluded that the album "has moments of charm ... but it’s not a good sign that the best moments are again soundtrack covers—'The Avengers' and John Barry’s 'The Ipcress File'." [14]
Tucson Weekly wrote that, "while a couple of tracks also court the attention of Esquivel-enamored lounge lizards (pop an umbrella in your cocktail while 'Exposé' slithers past), most of the originals have bucketsful of sand and salt to spare." [15] The Washington Post determined that, "in contrast to [Dick] Dale's often relentless surf-guitar assault, the Finns offer a more varied palette, contrasting Lankinen's slow, distorted guitar lines against the rhythm section's brisk, staccato backing and alternating lazy, atmospheric numbers to jacked-up, jittery workouts." [6]
Guitar Player deemed the album "party music supreme," writing that "Lankinen plays with a big, haunting twang, fast tremolo, and rad wang-bar quiver." [16] The Province praised the "romping sense of humor." [12] The Los Angeles Times opined that, "while many of the tracks boast an intricacy and quirkiness worthy of a Nino Rota or Ennio Morricone, the group also rocks with a vicious edge on the biker movie soundtrack tune 'Skater Dater'." [5]
AllMusic wrote that, "because Laika & the Cosmonauts are pure professionals in their job, they have remained the high artistic level in their music, even though The Amazing Colossal Band can be considered as party music to dance to." [11] The New Haven Register listed the album among the 100 best of the 1990s. [17]

Instrumental rock is rock music that emphasizes instrumental performance and features very little or no singing. Examples of instrumental music in rock can be found in practically every subgenre of the style. Instrumental rock was most popular from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s, with artists such as Bill Doggett Combo, The Fireballs, The Shadows, The Ventures, Johnny and the Hurricanes and The Spotnicks. Surf music had many instrumental songs. Many instrumental hits had roots from the R&B genre. The Allman Brothers Band feature several instrumentals. Jeff Beck also recorded two instrumental albums in the 1970s. Progressive rock and art rock performers of the late 1960s and early 1970s did many virtuosic instrumental performances.
The Surfaris are an American surf music band formed in Glendora, California, in 1962. They are best known for two songs that hit the charts in the Los Angeles area, and nationally by May 1963: "Surfer Joe" and "Wipe Out", which were the A-side and B-side of the same 45 rpm single.

Polara is an American alternative rock band formed in 1994 by Ed Ackerson, a musician and producer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band was considered one of the most prominent and creative groups to emerge from Minneapolis in the 1990s. Billboard writer Deborah Russell called Ackerson and Polara the front of "the emergence of a new local scene" more interested in pop music and postpunk than the punk rock of bands like Hüsker Dü and The Replacements.
Laika & the Cosmonauts were a Finnish rock band. They had the same lineup from the time they formed in 1987 until they stopped recording in 2008. The band was named after Laika, a Soviet space dog that died on board Sputnik 2 in 1957. Their sound was usually described as surf rock, but a Boston Globe review noted that the band's sound is "far beyond the limitations of any specific genre." The band relied heavily on the Finnish rautalanka electric guitar tradition. They toured the United States and Europe several times. Al Jourgensen of Ministry called them "the best f**king band in the world". In an email to the band's mailing list on 23 April 2008, Laika & the Cosmonauts announced they would be drawing their twenty-year career to a close with an American tour through the summer of 2008. The tour ended with shows at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas that fall. A compilation album, Cosmopolis, was released at the start of the tour.
Friends of Dean Martinez is an American instrumental rock / post-rock band featuring members of Giant Sand, Calexico, and Naked Prey. The band combines Americana with electronica, ambient, lounge, psychedelia and dub and intertwines surf rock-inspired lead guitars.
Mikko Lankinen is a Finnish musician. He plays lead guitar for the Finnish surf rock group Laika & the Cosmonauts and instrumental rock group The Potatoes. The lead singer for the Finnish progressive metal group Scenery Channel is also called Mikko Lankinen but they are not the same person.

The Insect Surfers are an American band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1979. The group bills itself "Planet Earth’s Longest-Running Modern Surf Band," and has been based out of Los Angeles, California since 1986. Inspired by the psychedelic surf sounds of the 1960s, their instrumental music is propelled by the energy of the punk movement that surrounded them at birth. Founder David Arnson has been the mainstay of the band's sound through numerous personnel changes over the decades. They are sometimes grouped into the category of "second wave" surf, the first wave being that of the 1960s originators, and the third wave being the scores of bands inspired by mid-1990s interest sparked by the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's movie Pulp Fiction. Insect Surfers have performed shows all over the US and Europe. Their music has appeared in videos and television shows, and along with a score of their own releases they have been featured on dozens of compilations. While only about a third of their music lacked vocals during their DC incarnations, after Arnson relocated to Los Angeles the band shifted focus to perform primarily instrumental tunes.
Ed Ackerson was an American musician and producer from Minneapolis. He produced or engineered dozens of records including works by prominent artists such as The Jayhawks, The Replacements, Motion City Soundtrack, Soul Asylum, Golden Smog, Dave Davies of The Kinks, Wesley Stace, Mason Jennings, Mark Mallman, John Strohm, Brian Setzer, Lizzo, Pete Yorn, The Wallflowers, Rhett Miller of The Old 97s, Jeremy Messersmith, and Juliana Hatfield. He owned a recording studio in Minneapolis, Flowers, and co-founded the Susstones record label. Ackerson led several notable Twin Cities pop/rock bands including Polara and The 27 Various, and released several solo records under his own name. He was also a prolific producer of albums by Twin Cities bands, and was regarded as one of the linchpins of the Minnesota music scene.

The band changed their name from Friends of Dean Martin right before the album's release, after threat of legal action by Martin's representatives.
