The Courtship of Anne Boleyn is an 1846 history painting by the German artist Emanuel Leutze. It depicts a scene from Tudor England during the reign of Henry VIII. The king is shown publicly courting Anne Boleyn, a lady-in-waiting to his first queen Catherine of Aragon

The work is also known as The Great Matter, a reference to the euphemism for the King's attempts to secure a divorce from his first wife. Today the painting is in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC [1]
