The Domain (Portuguese : A Herdade) is a 2019 Portuguese drama film directed by Tiago Guedes. [4] It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. [5] [6] It was also selected as the Portuguese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. [7] [8] A television series version of the film was also released by RTP1. [9]

Plot

The Fernandes are a family of landowners who have passed down a vast estate on the southern bank of the Tagus River in Portugal for generations. In 1973 João, the undisputed patriarch and current owner of the estate, will have to deal with the events linked to the Carnation Revolution of 1974 and, twenty years later, with the anxieties and the legacy of the next generation. Release

On September 5, 2019, the film was shown as part of the Official Selection at the Venice International Film Festival where it received a standing ovation after its first showing. The film was then released in Portugal on September 19, 2019. [12]

Awards

The homestead won the Golden Globe for Best Film at the 25th Golden Globes Gala, taking place at the Coliseu dos Recreios, in a ceremony presented by Jorge Corrula and Soraia Chaves. [13]

Madre Paula is a Portuguese drama television series adapting the novel of the same name by Patrícia Müller which stars Joana Ribeiro and Paulo Pires. It originally aired on RTP1 in 2017.

Maria João Gonçalves Abreu Soares, known as Maria João Abreu, was a Portuguese film, television and stage actress. Starring Anabela Moreira and Rita Blanco, the film portrays story of a family of several women from different generations, whose relationships with each other have grown poisoned by bitterness. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on 22 February 2023. It won Silver Bear Jury Prize at the festival. In September 2023, it was selected as the Portuguese entry in the Best International Feature Film category for the 96th Academy Awards.

Légua is a 2023 drama film directed by João Miller Guerra & Filipa Reis who co-wrote with Sara Morais, José Filipe Costa and Letícia Simões. It stars Carla Maciel and Fátima Soares accompanied by Vitória Nogueira da Silva, Sara Machado, Paulo Calatré and Manuel Mozos. It is a co-production between Portugal, France and Italy.
