The Emergency Room was an underground venue, recording studio and art space located in the Strathcona neighborhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in January 2007, The Emergency Room (Strathcona) emerged from Vancouver's DIY music scene and has been used as a practice space, art studio, gallery, and performance venue for touring and local acts. Performances and recordings at the Emergency Room have been by such acts as AIDS Wolf, Monotonix, Sex Vid, The Usaisamonster, Zs, T.I.T.S, Sissy Spacek, Bakelite, Hot Loins, Shearing Pinx, Mutators, Petroleum By-Product, Twin Crystals, Nü Sensae, White Lung, Defektors, Modern Creatures, White Owl, No Gold, Ice Cream, Cheerleader Camp and Vapid.

History

The Emergency Room was founded and named because of a lack of venues with interest in noise and experimental music. It was host to public performances at the underground parking lot of the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design on Granville Island. This location became known as the Emergency Room (Granville Island).

General interest in the concept grew, and the group of artists and musicians found a space for rent in Strathcona. They renovated the location, a former fish processing factory, into a warehouse venue. The location remained for a year and quickly established its name through its prolific recordings and high energy shows. This location was known as the Emergency Room (Strathcona) or, more commonly, The ER.

The warehouse caught the public eye in the summer of 2008 when local media began covering the phenomenon of its performances. The scene inspired the "weird punk" label [1] associated with assorted local Vancouver bands. As popularity grew, the venue became packed at every performance. The police took notice when rowdy crowds began pouring out into the streets every week, and the venue was repeatedly fined for noise, alcohol and safety code violations. It also became a target for burglary due to its secluded location and recording equipment. They closed the warehouse space in late 2008.

Recording studio

The Emergency Room also contained a recording studio [2] run by in-house engineer, Jordan Koop. It has been used by countless bands for DIY/Independent release and for release on various record labels including, Kill Rock Stars, Summer Lovers Unlimited, Grotesque Modern, Nominal Records, Isolated Now Waves and Hockey Dad Records.

Compilation LP

In 2008 two Vancouver independent record labels, Nominal Records and Grotesque Modern, released a full-length compilation album of artists who have performed or recorded at the Emergency Room entitled Emergency Room: Volume 1. The compilation was compared to Vancouver Complication in a review in Maximumrocknroll. [3] The 924 limited edition vinyl pressings also included a foreword by co-founder Justin Gradin and a 20-page photo book.

A rave describes a dance party at a warehouse, public or private property, typically featuring performances by DJs playing electronic dance music. The Guvernment

The Guvernment, formerly known as RPM, was a nightclub complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was also the name of one of the two main performance venues within the complex. The other venue was Kool Haus. Other smaller rooms within the complex included: The Drink, D'Luxe Lounge, The Orange Room, SkyBar, Charlies, Tanja and Acid Lounge. The Guvernment opened in 1996 and closed in early 2015.

The Hotel2Tango is a 24-track analogue recording studio situated in the Mile End district of Montreal, Quebec. The current facility is the second to bear the name, and was preceded by a similar operation in the same neighborhood until 2007 when the studio changed locations. Death By Audio

Death By Audio was a warehouse space on the first floor of an industrial building in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. It also shared the name of an effects pedal company that was based in the space.

The Weekender Club and Weekender Café was a music venue in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria. It programmed a broad variety of musical events reaching from live concerts and club nights with DJs, through to album release parties and guest events. In May 2017 it was closed, but there are still concerts presented by weekender in Innsbruck taking place.

The Schoolhouse is a mid-19th century public school building that was used as a performance space from 2001–2005. It is located at 30 West Street in the farming town of Hadley in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. The building was originally referred to as "Hadley District School House No. 2". When the space was in use as a performance space it was colloquially referred to as "The Schoolhouse". While in operation, the space hosted a variety of experimental and avant-garde music events featuring local, national, and international artists. Over this period, The Schoolhouse became a major venue in the noise, freak folk, and New Weird America scenes of the mid-aughts.

Le Guess Who?

Le Guess Who? is a Dutch music festival featuring different music genres: from avant-garde, jazz, hip hop, electronic, experimental, noise rock, indie rock, world music and others. The festival, founded by Bob van Heur and Johan Gijsen, has been hosted in the city of Utrecht since 2007. The festival takes place on various venues such as theaters, club venues, churches, galleries and warehouses across the city. The 14th edition of the festival takes place November 11–14, 2021, in the city of Utrecht (Netherlands). It will feature Phil Elverum, Matana Roberts, John Dwyer (musician), Midori Takada and Lucrecia Dalt as curators; the initial line-up includes SPAZA, Bohren & der Club of Gore, Black Country, New Road, Low (band), The Necks and Alabaster dePlume.

Nü Sensae

Nü Sensae is a punk and grunge trio from Vancouver, British Columbia, composed of bassist-vocalist Andrea Lukic, drummer Daniel Pitout, and guitarist Brody McKnight. In 2012, Spin magazine named them in their list of top 5 best new artists. Nü Sensae are currently signed to Suicide Squeeze Records. Due to Pitout pursuing education in England, the group went on hiatus in August 2014.

Suicide Squeeze Records

Suicide Squeeze Records is a Seattle, Washington-based independent record label that releases rock, pop, and metal music. Suicide Squeeze releases content on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital. The label has also released comedy and performance art CD and DVDs.

Mr. Smalls Live music venue in Pennsylvania, U.S.

Mr. Smalls is a live-music venue in the Millvale neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is an eclectic and innovative indie venue due to its location in a converted church from the early 20th century, its multiple interior event spaces, and its hosting of thousands of national, regional and local artists since its inception as a venue. Mr. Smalls has been the live music venue for many touring national acts over the years including Fall Out Boy, Bill Clinton, Snoop Dogg, Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Kesha, Interpol and Metric. It has a capacity of over 1,000 people amongst its various interior event spaces, namely the two performance spaces: the Theatre and the Funhouse.

Elizabeth Wirth Music Building McGill University (Montreal) campus building

The Elizabeth Wirth Music Building is one of two buildings belonging to the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, the other being the Strathcona Music Building directly adjacent to it. The building is located at 527 Sherbrooke Street West, on the corner of Sherbrooke and Aylmer Street in Montreal, Quebec and was designed in 2005 by the Montreal-based architectural firm Saucier + Perrotte. The building officially opened in 2006, and its construction was made possible through a donation of C$20 million from McGill alumnus Seymour Schulich to the Schulich School of Music. The building was officially inaugurated as the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building on April 30, 2015, after the School received a donation of C$7.5 million from McGill alumna Elizabeth Wirth.
