The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders is the fourth studio album by the New York psychedelic folk band the Holy Modal Rounders, released in 1968 through Elektra Records. Although Peter Stampfel does not regard the album highly, it has received positive reviews and its opener, "Bird Song," was notably included in the 1969 film Easy Rider.
Before the album's recording, the Holy Modal Rounders were effectively broken up. After their brief stint with the Fugs in 1965, Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber worked separately and had only reunited for the recording of Indian War Whoop and two gigs. [2] Stampfel himself was working with a new band The Moray Eels, which ultimately inspired the name of the album. [3] The group included his girlfriend Antonia (who co-wrote some of the songs for the album), Sam Shepard on drums, Richard Tyler on piano, and John Annis on bass. [4]
Despite the band's lack of activity, Elektra producer Frazier Mohawk, a fan of the group, approached the duo to record a new album. [2] Although Stampfel was reluctant to record with Weber again, the Moray Eels were signed to Elektra with the stipulation that Weber would join the recordings. [4] The album's recording took place in California, where the band briefly relocated. [3] Although Stampfel emphasized to Mohawk the need to force Weber to practice beforehand, the band ultimately entered the studio without a clear idea of what songs they were going to record. [2] Sessions quickly became unorganized and both the band and Mohawk used an excessive amount of drugs throughout the album's recording. [2]
The album was mixed without Stampfel in attendance. The engineers decided to make the album more "psychedelic" by not including grooves in between songs, much to the chagrin of Stampfel, who noted the songs would no longer have radio potential. [2] [3] Ultimately, "Bird Song" received some airplay because it was the first song on the album.
After the recording of the album, the Moray Eels and Weber merged and became performing as the Holy Modal Rounders. [4] In late 1968, they opened for Pink Floyd and Ike & Tina Turner before heading back east to New York City. [4] On their way back, they stopped in Boston, where they opened for the Velvet Underground in January 1969. [4]

Ritchie Unterberger, who wrote the liner notes for the 2002 reissue, regarded "Half a Mind" as rivaling "some of Syd Barrett's solo work" as well as describing the album as "a triumph, a melange of mind-melting acid folk that might have hung together by a thread, but was usually exhilarating, with a cracked, brain-damaged mystique all its own." [2] Al Campbell of AllMusic positively reviewed the album's highlights as "otherworldly compositions" and that the album was "unabashed in its own eccentricity." [1]
Stampfel himself does not regard the album in the highest esteem. He noted it reflected the music taste of Mohawk more so than of the Holy Modal Rounders [1] and that the excessive drug use and Weber's refusal to rehearse led to the album being a mixed bag. [3]
"Bird Song" was featured in the 1969 film Easy Rider directed by Dennis Hopper. The song caught the attention of Peter Fonda who heard it on the radio and thought it would be a perfect fit for the movie. [2] The melody is lifted from Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong" from 1956. [2]
The American band Space Needle named their second album The Moray Eels Eat the Space Needle in reference to the album title. [6]

Clamtones was an American folk rock group, and Jeffrey Frederick's most notable band. The best-known incarnation of the band formed in 1975 when Frederick and Jill Gross moved to Portland, Oregon and began playing with the backing band of the Holy Modal Rounders. Although the Clamtones only recorded one studio album, they were a popular act in the Portland music scene. They were inducted into Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2011.

Jeffrey Sutton Frederick (1950–1997) was a songwriter, guitarist and performer specializing in good-time Americana music—an idiosyncratic blend of folk, country and rock and roll. He was a largely uncredited predecessor of today's alternative country music genre. Also notorious for his pranks, he was a prodigious songwriter, specializing in sly, hilarious and soulful pieces. Frederick's tightly crafted songs and intricate guitar work were praised by the likes of Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Dan Hicks. His songs are being featured in a series of tribute albums, starting with St. Jeffrey's Day: The Songs of Jeffrey Frederick, Volume I (2008). Jeffrey Frederick and the Clamtones were inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame on October 8, 2011.
The Fugs First Album is the 1965 debut album by American rock band the Fugs, described in their AllMusic profile as "arguably the first underground rock group of all time". In 1965, the album charted #142 on Billboard's "Top Pop Albums" chart. The album was originally released in 1965 as The Village Fugs Sing Ballads of Contemporary Protest, Point of Views, and General Dissatisfaction on Folkways Records before the band signed up with ESP-Disk, who released the album under its own label with a new name in 1966. The album was re-released in 1993 on CD with an additional 11 tracks.

Fugs 4, Rounders Score is a 1975 compilation album of material by The Fugs and The Holy Modal Rounders, including seven previously unreleased performances from the Fugs' first recording session, when the Rounders were members of the Fugs' band. The title is both a reference to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and the fact that this is the fourth album of Fugs material released on ESP, as well as a pun on "score" as drug slang. Although all recordings were made under the umbrella of the Fugs, the 6 lead vocals by Stampfel and Weber on Side A allow the album to function as a Rounders compilation as well. There is a notable and unusual lack of lead vocalizing by Ed Sanders, the most prominent vocalist on all other Fugs albums.

The Down Hill Strugglers, previously known as the Dust Busters, is an American old-time string band trio from Brooklyn, New York, United States. Formed in 2008, the band has been influenced by the music that came out of rural America, including Appalachian traditions, music from the Deep South, and the Western States. The band was originally made up of Craig Judelman, Eli Smith, and Walker Shepard. In 2012, Craig Judelman left the Dust Busters and was replaced by multi-instrumentalist Jackson Lynch. At that time, the band changed its name to the Down Hill Strugglers.

Transformer is the only album by American musician David Stoughton, released in December 1968 by Elektra Records. Produced by Stoughton, the album is a mix of folk and pop songwriting with sound collages and musique concrète. The musician had drawn influence from composer John Cage and created the group The Cambridge Electric Opera Company to explore electronic and traditionally-based music; although the group perform on the album, it was credited to Stoughton alone to avoid confusion with fellow Elektra band Earth Opera.
