The Naughty Show was an adult-themed live comedy show and podcast hosted by creator Sam Tripoli.
In 2008, Tripoli developed the concept as a pilot for Comedy Central. [1] His idea was to bring rock and roll and chaos back to stand-up by turning a show into an event. He created a variety show with a party atmosphere in hopes of attracting young, fun bar crowds into the comedy clubs. [2]
Tripoli describes it as “the dirty show you can bring your girlfriend to.” [3]
Sam Tripoli hosted the live events along with the show's head writer, comedian Jayson Thibault, and cast regulars Skippy Simon as "Bunny Fever" and the music of Julia Lillis.
The Naughty Show featured stand-up from headlining comedians, and past performers have included Dane Cook, Joe Rogan, Jim Norton, Nick Swardson, Margaret Cho, Doug Benson, Russell Peters, Whitney Cummings, Jeffrey Ross, Steve Byrne, Bill Burr, Bobby Lee, Bryan Callen, Chris D'Elia, Al Madrigal, Bert Kreischer, Brody Stevens, Joey Diaz, Christina Pazsitzky, Tom Segura, and Danielle Stewart. [4]
The shows also incorporated pole dancing, stripping, and interviews and comedy sketches with A-list adult industry stars, including Ryan Keely, Belladonna, Jenna Haze, Kayden Kross, Puma Swede, Ann Marie Rios, Penthouse Pet of the Year 2010 Taylor Vixen, [2] 2011 Nikki Benz, and 2012 Jenna Rose. [5]
Tripoli asked for volunteers throughout the show, and audience members who participated won gift bags provided by the show's sponsor, Fun Factory. [6] Additionally, comedians were planted throughout the audience as part of the performance. During a show in 2010, comedian Ari Shaffir heckled from the crowd as his character “The Amazing Racist”, prompting "Rowdy" Roddy Piper to demand Shaffir join him on stage, where the two engaged in a wrestling match. [7]
The live events occasionally premiered comedy videos, like 2012's “The Miseducation of Siri”, written by Tripoli and Thibault, directed by Ryan Richter and starring Brody Stevens as Steve Jobs alongside classic Naughty Show characters. [8]
Live Naughty Show events were held monthly at different venues on the road and in Los Angeles, including The Improv, The Comedy Store, and The Viper Room.
Sam Tripoli's Naughty Show podcast premiered on the DEATHSQUAD network on January 19, 2011. The pilot episode featured Tripoli, frequent co-host Jayson Thibault and DEATHSQUAD creator and recording engineer Brian Redban. [9]
The show was available free on the Internet, and viewers could watch the live broadcast on Ustream as it was recorded. The audio podcast was released several days later on iTunes and Stitcher Radio, and the full video was made available on Deathsquad.tv. [10]
In the style of the live show, Tripoli hosted a mix of guests ranging from comedians, actors, writers, and musicians, to adult film stars, Penthouse Pets, and everyone in between[ who? ]. The content was uncensored and typically averaged 90 minutes in length.
The first 46 episodes were broadcast from Redban's home in Burbank, California.
On November 7, 2011, the show began recording at DEATHSQUAD's studio at The Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena, California. [11]
In January 2012, Vicky Pezza joined the show as a producer and cast member. [12]
LA SpeedWeed began sponsoring the show in April 2012.
On October 12, 2012, the show recorded its first live episode from The First Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival, [13] featuring the entire cast along with guests Fred Stoller, Kayden Kross, and Duncan Trussell. It [14] was the last episode released on the DEATHSQUAD Network.
The Naughty Show joined Bill Burr and Al Madrigal’s podcast network All Things Comedy [15] in late October 2012, and recurring guest Gareth Reynolds became an official cast member at that time.
Christopher "Dragonfly" Coleman joined the crew as an associate producer in March 2013, [16] and became the show's recording engineer in January 2014.
Episodes released on All Things Comedy were originally recorded at The Joint Studios in Burbank, California, from October 2012 through May 2013. [17]
On June 4, 2013, the show began recording at Playboy Studios in Burbank, California, and broadcasts live on Playboy Radio. The series stopped producing video episodes at that time, but began releasing two audio podcasts per week.
The Naughty Show entered its fourth season and aired live Tuesday nights, 9pm PST on Playboy Radio, and every Wednesday and Sunday morning on All Things Comedy.
Tripoli described the podcast as "one of my favorite things I've ever done." [3]
