The Oriental Hotel Leyte, also known as The Oriental Leyte, is a hotel in the town of Palo in Leyte, Philippines. It is the only four-star rated hotel in the Eastern Visayas according to the Department of Tourism's National Accommodation Standards.
The facility is part of The Oriental Hotels and Resorts chain of the LKY Group of Companies. [1]
Another hotel used to stand at the site of The Oriental Leyte. This hotel was the MacArthur Park Beach Resort which was built in 1983 by then First Lady Imelda Marcos. The hotel was sequestered by the Philippine national government after the People Power Revolution in 1986 and was transferred to the Leyte local government in 2009.
The Leyte government leased the associated property of the MacArthur hotel to the LKY Resorts and Hotel under a 25-year build, operate and transfer lease agreement in the same year. [2]
The MacArthur Park Hotel's building was demolished to make way for a new hotel building. The Oriental Leyte first opened in 2012 [3] The hotel building sustained heavy damage from Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Super Typhoon Yolanda, in November 2013 forcing a ceasure of operations. Repair works on the hotel's facilities costed at least ₱300 million [4] and The Oriental Leyte was reopened in 2016. [3]
In January 2020, the Department of Tourism (DOT) gave the hotel a four-star rating under its National Accommodation Standards for hotels. The Oriental Leyte became the first hotel in the Eastern Visayas region to be given star accreditation by the tourism government department. [5] However the hotel experienced a decline in bookings due to the COVID-19 pandemic which worsened in the same year. [6]
The Oriental Leyte is situated besides the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park [7] and is connected to the park by a bridge since 2019. [8] The hotel has 129 regular rooms and 8 suites. It also has 13 function rooms and a business center, as well as five videoke rooms, a fitness gym, three swimming pools and a single spa. [3] The hotel prior to the onslaught of Typhoon Haiyan had 110 rooms. [4]
As of 2020, the hotel is a four-star hotel under the DOT's National Accommodation Standards. Under the tourism department's star-rating system, the hotel rated 716 points based on an assessment of its facilities and services. [3]

Constructed during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos through Japanese Official Development Assistance loans, it has a total length of 2.16 kilometers (1.34 mi)—the second longest bridge spanning a body of seawater in the Philippines after the Cebu-Cordova Bridge. Guiuan, officially the Municipality of Guiuan, is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. It constitutes the southeastern extremity of Samar Island and some adjacent islands, surrounded by Leyte Gulf and the Philippine Sea, two major bodies of water that makes the town the surfing capital of the Visayas. Romualdez Airport served 1.48 million passengers, making it the seventh-busiest in the country.
Tropical Depression Winnie was a weak, but catastrophic tropical cyclone that killed nearly 1,600 people after triggering widespread flooding in the Philippines. It was the second deadliest tropical cyclone of 2004 worldwide, only surpassed by Hurricane Jeanne. A depression, which formed east of Samar, brought heavy rain to areas where it passed through, and affecting many areas, owing to Winnie’s large cloudiness.

Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. Upon making landfall, Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. It is one of the deadliest Philippine typhoons on record, killing at least 6,300 people in that country alone. In terms of JTWC-estimated 1-minute sustained winds, Haiyan is tied with Meranti in 2016 for being the second strongest landfalling tropical cyclone on record, only behind Goni of 2020. As of January 2014, bodies were still being found. Haiyan was also the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2013.
The MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park is a protected area of the Philippines that commemorates the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf at the start of the campaign to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation on 20 October 1944. This event led to the largest naval battle of World War II and Japan's eventual defeat and surrender after almost three years. The war memorial is located in the municipality of Palo on Leyte island in Eastern Visayas and is one of the region's major tourist attractions. It was declared a national park on 12 July 1977 through Letter of Instructions No. 572 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos.

It was built by then-First Lady Imelda Marcos, the wife of president Ferdinand Marcos, although the hotel was run privately. It was seized by the Philippine government in 1986 and later demolished in 2009 to make way for a new hotel, The Oriental Leyte which opened in 2012.
