Johnny Lynch (born 28 September 1981, Edinburgh) is a Scottish musician who performs under the pseudonym The Pictish Trail. After graduation from the University of St Andrews, Lynch ran Fence Records from 2003 until 2013 and has since been running Lost Map Records. [2] [3] Lynch has attended and played every Green Man Festival since its inception in 2003. He's also played as band member with other musicians, including James Yorkston and Malcolm Middleton. In 2010 he released an album and toured with Adem Ilhan under the name Silver Columns. [4]

Career

Early career

Johnny Lynch started performing under the moniker The Pictish Trail in 2002, recording his first album on his computer and releasing it on Fence Records in 2003. [5] Lynch ran Fence Records from 2003 until August 2013, working for the label for 10 years in total, before leaving to form a new label, Lost Map Records. [6]

Secret Soundz Vol. 1 (2008–2012)

Lynch released his proper debut album, Secret Soundz Vol.1, in September 2008, to critical acclaim. [3] [7] In February 2009, The Times named Secret Soundz as an "Essential Recording" of the Fence Collective. [8] In 2010 The List magazine named Lynch as the 12th "Hottest Scot" in its list of creative Scottish people. His 2010 album In Rooms (12" vinyl) consists of 50 songs of 30 seconds each written as part of the "100 Days To Make Me A Better Person" project of 2009. [9] Lynch also supported KT Tunstall throughout her 2010-2011 European tour in support of her 2010 album, Tiger Suit. [10]

Secret Soundz Vol. 2 (2012–2016)

Secret Soundz Vol. 2 was recorded with Sweet Baboo taking up production duties, on the Isle of Eigg (where Lynch now lives), in 2012. The album was released to critical praise in February 2013. [11] It was re-released as a double CD set, with Vol.1, on Moshi Moshi in 2014.

In July 2014, the first Howlin' Fling Festival took place on Eigg, with Lynch as organiser and performer. The line-up included, among others, Jens Lekman, Beth Orton and Sam Amidon, The Phantom Band and various bands from Lost Map Records. A companion mini-festival took place for the first time in August 2015 at Penicuik Town Hall. [12]

The Pictish Trail appeared on James Yorkston's 2014 album, The Cellardyke Recording and Wassailing Society, and toured live with Yorkston supporting the release. [13]

Future Echoes (2016)

In September 2016, Pictish Trail (without "The" in its name) released a new album, Future Echoes, produced by Adem. It featured the singles "Far Gone" and "Dead Connection". A full tour followed the released, with the band featuring members of Lost Map signees Tuff Love. Around the same time, Lynch and members of Tuff Love also toured with Malcolm Middleton as his backing band. [14]

Together with his band, Lynch supported Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall once more, this time at her open air gig at the Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow in August 2017. [15]

Thumb World (2020 to present)

Thumb World released in February 2020, featuring the singles Double Sided, Lead Balloon and Turning Back. [16] The album received positive reviews from critics, with Jamie Bowman of The Skinny describing it as "funny, beautiful and life-affirming". [17]

In April 2020, amid the COVID-19 outbreak, Lynch was featured in a Guardian article about the Lost Map Records residency project on Eigg, in light of the UK-wide lockdown. [18]

Personal life

Lynch lives on Eigg with his partner, Sarah Boden, and their son and daughter.

Kenny Anderson, known primarily by his stage name King Creosote, is an independent singer-songwriter from Fife, Scotland. To date, Anderson has released over forty albums, with his latest full length, Astronaut Meets Appleman, released in 2016. Anderson is also a member of Scottish-Canadian band The Burns Unit. In 2011, Anderson's collaborative album with Jon Hopkins, Diamond Mine, was nominated for the Mercury Prize and the Scottish Album of the Year Award. Astronaut Meets Appleman was also longlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year Award.

Drastic Fantastic is the second studio album by Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall. It features some unreleased tracks she wrote before Eye to the Telescope such as new tracks she wrote in 2003. The record was released by Relentless Records on 10 September 2007 in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, on 15 September in Australia, and 18 September 2007 in the United States and Canada. However, the album was leaked on P2P networks on 3 September 2007.

Fence Records is a Scottish independent record label based in Anstruther and Crail, Fife, Scotland, founded by musician King Creosote. Fence Records released records by James Yorkston, Rozi Plain, Lone Pigeon, U.N.P.O.C., Kid Canaveral, eagleowl, Randolph's Leap, Deaf Mutes, Withered Hand, Delifinger, Barbarossa, The Shivers and FOUND amongst others. Kid Canaveral

Kid Canaveral is a Scottish alternative pop band that formed in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, but are now based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since 2007 the band have released a number of well received singles, an E.P. and an album on their own label, Straight to Video Records, and in 2011 they signed with Scottish independent label Fence Records. The band left Fence Records to join Johnny Lynch on his new label Lost Map Records in August 2013. The band have received praise for their pop hooks and melodies, and their energetic and engaging live performances. Their second record Now That You Are a Dancer was nominated for the 2014 Scottish Album of the Year Award. The group released their third record Faulty Inner Dialogue, via Lost Map Records, on 29 July 2016.

Silver Columns is the collaborative effort of Johnny Lynch, aka The Pictish Trail and Adem Ilhan, bassist in post-rock outfit Fridge.

You and Your Sister 1978 single by Chris Bell

"You and Your Sister" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Chris Bell, that appears on his only solo album I Am the Cosmos. It was released as a B-side to Bell's only single "I Am the Cosmos." The song is very similar in composition, vocals, and guitar playing to Big Star's "Thirteen," which Bell co-wrote with bandmate Alex Chilton, as it is also an acoustic love ballad. It features backing vocals by Chilton.

Yorkston/Thorne/Khan is a musical trio made up of the Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist James Yorkston, English bass player and singer Jon Thorne and Indian sarangi player and singer Suhail Yusuf Khan. Their musical style has been described as "Indian-folk-jazz fusion" and "a kind of rustic neo-psychedelia". Their recordings feature both original and traditional material, with lyrics in English, Hindi, Urdu and other languages of the Indian subcontinent. They have released three albums on Domino Records.
