Keith Gordon Green was an American contemporary Christian music pianist, singer, and songwriter originally from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York. Beyond his music, Green is best known for his strong devotion to Christ and challenging others to the same. Several of his compositions became standards of contemporary Christian music. Notable songs include "Oh Lord, You're Beautiful", "Asleep in the Light", "Your Love Broke Through", "You Put This Love in My Heart", "The Prodigal Son Suite", and "There Is a Redeemer", the last of which was written by his wife Melody.

The long version was still played on many album rock and alternative rock radio stations. At most live shows on the first leg of the group's 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, the band would pick a member from the audience to play guitar for the song. The single has sold 205,000 copies as of July 2010. Despite the song's commercial success, it is the only hit single from the American Idiot album not to be included on the band's greatest hits album God's Favorite Band.

These compilation albums are treated with several previously unreleased songs. Both volumes were re-released in 1999 with new covers patterned after the Songs of... series. The re-issue also included a digital copy of the book No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green.
