The Rebellion is an independent supporters group for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. [1] [2] The main intent of The Rebellion is to organize, unite, strengthen, and increase support for the New England Revolution. The group is an 501c7 organization. [3] The Rebellion's goal is to support the Revolution at every match by “cheering, singing, ranting, raving, and screaming" for the Revolution in order to create a loud and intimidating atmosphere at Gillette Stadium. [4] The group hosts watch parties for away matches at several New England restaurants and bars. [5] [6] Additionally the group hosts tailgates in Gillette's lot 3B prior to each home match. [7]

The Fort

The majority of Rebellion members sit in the North Stands of the stadium (Sections 141, 142, and 143 of Gillette Stadium) in an area dubbed "The Fort". The Fort is a general admission section and draws its name from the revolutionary theme which runs through the team and independent supporters' associations. [8] [9] The Fort is open to all supporters of the New England Revolution who want to support their team by singing, chanting, shouting, standing, waving flags, and doing so in the company of other like-minded fans. The other Revolution supporters' group, The Midnight Riders, also stand in The Fort. [10] Chants are led by a "capo", an individual standing with their back to the game who conducts the supporters groups. [11]

History

Formed in 2010, The Rebellion takes its name from the unique role New England played in the rebellion that led to the American Revolution, and a desire to cause a rebellion in New England soccer culture.

In 2017, members of the Rebellion collaborated with Big D and the Kids Table to record a song that would be played at Revolution matches. [12]

In 2020 The Rebellion launched a fundraising campaign titled "Rebels for a Cause" that raised north of $7,000 for COVID-19 economic relief. The effort was originally focused on the group's official supporter's bar The Brass Monkey but was then extended towards others in the group seeking relief. [13]

In 2022, The Rebellion formed a partnership with former radio show turned podcast Revolution Recap, a weekly podcast discussing recent New England Revolution news, signings and matches, with an occasional interview of current and former players. Previous guests include Jay Heaps, Christina Unkel, Shalrie Joseph, Jeff Larentowicz, Henry Kessler, and DeJuan Jones. [14]

The Supporter's Cup

Since 2018, The Rebellion have participated in an 11v11, one-off soccer match against the Revolution's other largest supporter's group, The Midnight Riders. The event is aimed at raising funds through ticket sales, attendance, and merchandise sales. A portion of profits are donated to the preferred charities of both groups. [15]

Ray Sullivan Unsung Hero Award

Starting in 2021, The Rebellion have presented the "Ray Sullivan Unsung Hero Award" to a Revolution supporter that has gone "above and beyond the call of duty" and "puts others before themselves." [17] The award was created to honor the life and memory of Ray Sullivan, a Revolution supporter, and American Politician who served as a Democratic Party (United States) member in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. [18] Working with the Obama administration, Sullivan was hired as executive director of Marriage Equality Rhode Island, a 501(c)(4) organization. [19] He actively worked to support full marriage equality instead of a "discriminatory" civil unions bill. [20]

The Midnight Riders is the independent supporters group for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. The name refers to the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. The main aim of the Midnight Riders “is to form a network of supporters such that (they) can meet, watch, travel to, and discuss games, and have a collective voice for supporters' interests with Revolution management.” The Midnight Riders are viewed as “the most passionate Revolution followers”, have been around since the inception of the league, and are known for their use of chants, singing, drums, and banners to show their support for the team and lead others in doing so. The main colors worn amongst The Midnight Riders are dark blue and white. The majority of the Midnight Riders sit in the north stand of the stadium and have a banner hanging across the front of this section. In addition to their game time activities The Midnight Riders are responsible for hosting and participating in charitable events, organizing road trips to away games, and awarding an annual “Man of the Year” award.

The 2010 New England Revolution season was the fifteenth season of the team's existence. The regular season began on March 27, 2010 with a 1–0 loss to the LA Galaxy and ended on October 21 with a 2–0 loss at the New York Red Bulls.

The 2011 New England Revolution season was the sixteenth season of the team's existence, all in Major League Soccer. The regular season began on March 20, 2011 at Los Angeles Galaxy and concluded on October 22, 2011 at Toronto FC. New England's first league home game was March 26 against D.C. United.

The 2012 New England Revolution season was the team's seventeenth year of existence, all in Major League Soccer. The team opened its season on March 10 at the San Jose Earthquakes and concluded on October 27 at Montreal Impact. New England's first home league game was March 24 against the Portland Timbers.

The 2013 New England Revolution season was the team's eighteenth year of existence, all in Major League Soccer. The team also participated in the Desert Diamond Cup and U.S. Open Cup. The season began with a 1-0 win at the Chicago Fire on March 9 and concluded with a 1-0 win at Columbus Crew on October 27. That victory saw the Revolution make the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 season. The team lost 4-3 on aggregate to eventual champions Sporting Kansas City in the Conference Semifinals of the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The D.C. United–New England Revolution rivalry is a soccer rivalry between D.C. United and the New England Revolution, who both play in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. The two clubs were among the 10 founding members of MLS, and began playing against each other regularly since 1996. The rivalry intensified in the mid-2000's as the two clubs were among the premier franchises in MLS, although recently it has been seen as a secondary, yet fierce rivalry, between the two clubs.
