The 2008 North American SuperLiga was the second edition of the SuperLiga competition. The top four Major League Soccer and Liga MX teams by point totals at the end of the season earned qualification. [1] All games of the tournament were broadcast live on Fox Sports World in Canada (English), Telefutura in the United States (Spanish), and Televisa and TV Azteca in Mexico (both Spanish).

The 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup was the eighth edition of the Gold Cup, the soccer championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF). It was contested in the United States in July 2005. The United States emerged victorious in the final against an upstart Panama team led by tournament MVP Luis Tejada. After regulation and 30 minutes of extra time ended scoreless, the U.S. won 3–1 on penalties.

The United States national team has participated in all seventeen editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup since its foundation in 1991 to replace the CONCACAF Championship. This was the 2nd edition of the tournament. The match was won by the New England Revolution, who defeated the Houston Dynamo 6–5 on penalties after drawing the match 2-2. New England's goals were scored by Steve Ralston and Shalrie Joseph, and the win marked the club's second trophy.
