The Song at the Scaffold (German : Die Letzte am Schafott) is a 1931 novella by the German writer Gertrud von Le Fort.
It is set during the French Revolution and is written as a letter from an exiled French nobleman who recounts what he has seen in France. The story focuses on a fictional noblewoman, Blanche de la Force, who sympathises with the martyrs of Compiègne—a group of Carmelite nuns—as they are brought to the scaffold by the revolutionaries.
It is a Catholic novella that portrays the loss of Christian ideals as the reason for a society's turn to madness. [1] It became particularly popular among Christian existentialists due to its subject of fear. The Encyclopedia of Catholic Literature associates its themes with an appeal to call on God in times of fear, the prayer during Catholic mass for Jesus to protect the faithful from anxiety, divine grace as a mystery during adversity, and Psalm 4, verse 1: "thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress". The novella was the basis for the 1949 play The Song at the Scaffold by Emmet Lavery. [3] It was the basis for The Carmelites by Georges Bernanos, originally written as a film screenplay in 1948 but performed as a play. Bernanos' version was adapted into the 1956 opera Dialogues of the Carmelites by Francis Poulenc and the 1960 film Dialogue with the Carmelites directed by Raymond Léopold Bruckberger and Philippe Agostini. The Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, known as the Carmelites or sometimes by synecdoche known simply as Carmel, is a mendicant order in the Catholic Church for both men and women. Historical records about its origin remain uncertain; it was probably founded in the 12th century on Mount Carmel in what is now Israel.
Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc was a French composer and pianist. His compositions include songs, solo piano works, chamber music, choral pieces, operas, ballets, and orchestral concert music. Among the best-known are the piano suite Trois mouvements perpétuels (1919), the ballet Les biches (1923), the Concert champêtre (1928) for harpsichord and orchestra, the Organ Concerto (1938), the opera Dialogues des Carmélites (1957), and the Gloria (1959) for soprano, choir, and orchestra.
Compiègne is a commune in the Oise department of northern France. It is located on the river Oise, and its inhabitants are called Compiégnois.
Louis Émile Clément Georges Bernanos was a French author, and a soldier in World War I. A Catholic with monarchist leanings, he was critical of elitist thought and was opposed to what he identified as defeatism. He believed this had led to France's defeat and eventual occupation by Germany in 1940 during World War II. His two best-known novels Sous le soleil de Satan (1926) and the Journal d'un curé de campagne (1936) both revolve around a parish priest who combats evil and despair in the world. Most of his novels have been translated into English and frequently published in both Great Britain and the United States.
Saint Hermenegild or Ermengild, was the son of King Liuvigild of the Visigothic Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula and southern France. He fell out with his father in 579, then revolted the following year. During his rebellion, he converted from Arianism to Chalcedonian Christianity. Hermenegild was defeated in 584 and exiled. His death was later celebrated as a martyrdom due to the influence of Pope Gregory I's Dialogues, in which he portrayed Hermenegild as a "Catholic martyr rebelling against the tyranny of an Arian father."
Pierre Louis Bernac was a French singer, a baryton-martin, known as an interpreter of the French mélodie. He had a close artistic association with Francis Poulenc, with whom he performed in France and abroad. Poulenc wrote 90 songs for him during their 25-year musical partnership.
Dialogues des Carmélites, FP 159, is an opera in three acts, divided into twelve scenes with linking orchestral interludes, with music and libretto by Francis Poulenc, completed in 1956. Poulenc wrote the libretto for his second opera after the work of the same name by Georges Bernanos, itself based on The Song at the Scaffold by Gertrud von Le Fort. This is a fictionalized version of the story of the Martyrs of Compiègne, Carmelite nuns who, in 1794 during the closing days of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, were guillotined in Paris for refusing to renounce their vocation.

The Martyrs of Compiègne were the 16 members of the Carmel of Compiègne, France: 11 Discalced Carmelite nuns, three lay sisters, and two externs. They were executed by the guillotine towards the end of the Reign of Terror, at what is now the Place de la Nation in Paris on 17 July 1794, and are venerated as beatified martyrs of the Catholic Church. Ten days after their execution, Maximilien Robespierre himself was executed, ending the Reign of Terror. Their story has inspired a novella, a motion picture, a television movie, and an opera, Dialogues of the Carmelites, written by French composer Francis Poulenc.
